Such a fun commission! ...and totally appropriate for this time of year. Big angry werewolf for the win. I wanted to make an intense red moon and was only further propelled to do one after photographing the recent lunar eclipse. Typically once they're red they're very faint, but I wanted to play up the color intensity to add to the mood.This is the additional SFW version for my client, instead of the original NSFW. YESSS BLOOD MOON LIGHTING I AM SO INTO IT.Β Completely blowing the red out of proportion was such a good idea, it's SO GOOD AND DRAMATIC HAHA.Β I absolutely love the way it rims the trees and outlines the character.Β And THE FUR IS SO GOOD!!! omg all those little tufts!!Β I especially his shoulders and those BIG BEEFY neck muscles omg.Β AMAZING JOB!!

Eveeeentually I'll practice on more deciduous trees and their dumb complexity. Pines are just so much easier to work with. Note to self- work on more leafy trees and scaly critters. The next commission has reptiles which are greatly removed from my expertise.Β
Painting scales and leaves will be interesting. We'll see how it turns out.

Deciduous trees are the WORST to render.Β The clumps of leaves are still a mystery to me.Β And whether to render them as a clump or individually it's HARD.Β And I hate it when people use leaf brushes it never even SORT OF looks okay.Β SCALES though I LOVE SCALES.Β Way more than fur.Β They're iridescent and fun and YES scales I love scales.Β Β I can't wait to see how it comes out!!!

Exactly! That's why I despise them. I then go and peruse a lot of scenery photos I've taken and debate the same thing: do I render them individually...clumps..?? Ugh. Scales I'll have to pussyfoot through at first. I'm trying to look into suggested techniques for rendering them. I feel doing every scale would look too busy, but don't know where to strike the balance.

Bright red moon sometimes happens around here due to I think certain atmospheric conditions, outside of the eclipse. Not quite THAT bright, but as you said it definitely adds tot he atmosphere.
