I'd like to see a bit more of that hand -- more space in the top-right, and less of the stuff in the bottom left. Something like this:

[link]

The background either blurred out more or just plain white. This makes the stuff less distracting and helps us focus on what's in front of us. Additionally, it helps with the feel of the shot as well.

The lighting works, but it's a bit noisy.

Way too much vignette. It makes the shot look artificial and over processed. You want to keep this shot simple, eloquent, and clean. Minimal.

As kkart has suggested, make this B&W and get rid of the remaining color. Straightening the photo will also increase its impact.

P.S. Don't pay too much attention to the number of stars I gave you. 5/5 is a level I can only dream of attaining. e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s… " width="15" height="15" alt="" title=" (Smile)"/>

Ok I will give this a whirl at critiquing it, you ready? e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s… " width="15" height="15" alt="" title=" (Smile)"/>

I like this shot overall and I feel that is quite good, there are a few things in here I would do and I will go in to those.

First off, kill the color completely, go with a B&W only on this, or a sepia tone, either one will work. It is this kind of image that having a monotone throughout really works well!

Secondly, straighten and level it, it is slightly cantered to the left on a downwards angle. Look at the chair in the background just below your hand, use that as a base to level the photo.

I like your focus here but also feel it could be a little stronger, I want to see the background a tad more out of focus and maybe your hand in sharper focus, I want that to be the center of attention. If you look at the chair at the very end of the keyboard, it is a little to much in focus. (Make sense)

This grabs my attention, though. There is something about this shot that really draws me in, and it has almost a 'mysterious' yet romantic quality about it. I like that and I admire how you communicated that to the viewer.

Over all I would say nice work on this, you did well.

Hope this helps!
Johnny

Thank you so much for taking the time to critique my work
And yes, I was entirely ready for the critique
You and Kingrabbit gave some really good suggestions about this piece, which i will definitely take into consideration the next time I take a picture.
This shot was taken by my friend, and I edited it and muted out the colors, but going completely black and white with it is a really good idea.
And I see your point; the chair does take up space in the focal area. I don't have any editing programs except paint, and I'm not too good at it, and Picnik.com, which I'm getting familiar with. If not, I would have blurred the background. Thank you again for this critique; I will definitely keep all of this in mind.

I forgot to add, resize it down, as it is quite large, go with about 700px

Awesome shot!

I think the vignette greatly centres our attention there. I like the way it feels near monotone and how that heightens the atmosphere and mood overall. It's pretty awesome how the keys reflect the surroundings, and I like how the lighting is bright enough that a shadow is produced.

I feel as if the vignette is a bit too.. intense, or maybe just the darkness. It feels a bit too muggy and a bit too... indistinct? =/

Perhaps you could have positioned the camera better as well, and moved it more to the right so that more of the hand was within the frame.

It's not bad, anyway... I like the composition well enough, and I think the square format is fitting.

Thank you again, chica, for your time and constructive criticism. It does open my eyes to new things and how to better the composition and editing of the photographs.

My friend, Stephanie, was actually the one who took the photograph, so the next time I attempt to recreate this, I'll keep in mind your words. I did like the muted colors, instead of going entirely black and white with it. But now, I would like to see how much of a difference it would make.

Looking back on it, I do agree, the vignette maybe be a little too much. Hehe, it does look a little too muggy. XD

Again, thank you so much for your ideas.

I like this!

but since you have requested critique here goes. the image is very cliche, but the hand in the image kinda makes up for that. also it appears you took this in auto mode because the ISO or film speed is way to high and made the image very grainy... could also be tilted level and cropped better unless its tilted on purpose

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

FireWolf23 In reply to kingrabbit [2011-03-05 16:18:25 +0000 UTC]

Thank you so much for the insight... I'll definitely let my friend know this before she goes camera crazy again
I'm not entirely sure, but I think she did tilt it on purpose to go along with the edge of the piano... but again, not entirely sure.
Thank you for your comment, I'll definitely keep that in mind the next time i go to take a picture.
What would you recommend to use, if I wanted to recreate that same one? Just curious.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

kingrabbit In reply to FireWolf23 [2011-03-05 16:28:12 +0000 UTC]

well generally the lowest number in the ISO settings means the least amount of grain... but a higher shutter speed is required so if you set your ISO to like 80 don't move anything! or it will blur I actually put a 2 sec delay on may camera so my hands are completely of it when the shutter goes off. and if I were you I would just "pose" like your playing

auto mode actually pushes up the ISO to compensate for the darkness and keep a fast shutter. hence even more grain

Hmm..
Ok, I'm going to keep your comment and 'kkart's comment in mind for when i attempt to take shots like this

kingrabbit In reply to FireWolf23 [2011-03-05 18:47:52 +0000 UTC]

just remember ISO and wiki it ! or just read about the 3 basic settings on a camera

they are like primary colors you can mix them and overlap but you can never get rid of one or the other ISO, F/stop and shutter... that's it anything else is a add on, wide angle lenses and such...
