Description This zebra is part of an animated short pitch I've been working on for some while, so I'm keeping the specifics close to my chest.
Unfortunately, since I began it, Madagascar came out in cinemas so I'm guessing lots of folks will assume I ripped off the zebra from that, but it's just one of those things... there are only so many ideas out there, and sooner or later if you don't get yours out there quick enough, someone beats you to the punch.
I hope that the context of my idea puts enough clear water between my idea and theirs anyway, but we'll see...

love the Zebra !!! And it has nothing to do with the one from Madagascar apart from being a Zebra, not the same features " Marty" is a lot more geometrical, if I may say so
I am going to put a Deviant watch on you

Many thanks i-be-c... mind you, there's always room for improvement. I did a short stint for "Mackinnon and Saunders" some time ago, but I couldn't match their accuracy and speed - you may know them as the team that made the puppets for "Corpse Bride" and "Bob the Builder" amongst other things. They like their plasticine sculpts hubble-telescope-lens smooth and all done and dusted inside of 2 weeks. That's the challenge...

It only matters if he is a white horse with black stripes or black horse with white stripes.

Flapjackrabbit In reply to Gaber [2008-01-27 10:06:44 +0000 UTC]

Yes and no. Yes it matters, but you're wrong on both counts. He's natural haircolour is one single midtone grey all over, but he has an unlimited supply of black and white hair-colouring products and a hidden agenda. And I never said he was a horse either!

how long does stuff like this take you?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Flapjackrabbit In reply to Legends-of-terraII [2007-12-01 20:25:51 +0000 UTC]

Mr. Zebra took me 3 weeks to sculpt (evenings and weekends) and a further week to paint, though it was an on-and-off affair. (there was a 3 month gap between the initial 2 weeks spent sculpting it and the second 2, due to other commitments. I'm still trying to get faster and slicker, but I was finding my feet with this one!

Flapjackrabbit In reply to Cilitra [2007-11-09 07:54:23 +0000 UTC]

Not as hard as the stripes Sorry, I know what you meant! It's partly a steady hand with a pencil, then a paintbrush, lastly an airbrush to take off the hard edges. Also being told to avoid jet black was tricky...have you ever tried mixing black with colours? Ultramarine and Burnt umber come close.

Cilitra In reply to Flapjackrabbit [2007-11-09 10:38:00 +0000 UTC]

XD this is what happens when I'm working AND commenting on DA....I think so fast I forget letters XD
I'm such a clutch and have such a shaky hand that doing anything in my hand (sculpting or painting) comes out really shaky and details I can forget about. So I just use the mouse to color in photoshop since it has the wonderful amazing UNDO button!!!
Anyhoo, defenitly keep up the sculpting since it rocks my socks right off!

Flapjackrabbit In reply to zaulia [2007-04-20 09:42:17 +0000 UTC]

Hey, I may be good at getting shapes from cardboard, but I'm not that good!!! (I wish!) No the zebra is plasticine (do you call it that or do you know it better as modelling clay?) built on a wire armature and painted with acrylic. I should explain, I work in a variety of materials, card is just one of them.

zaulia In reply to Flapjackrabbit [2007-04-20 10:22:00 +0000 UTC]

yeah, I lloked at the rabbit and understood it's not cardboard plasticin.. I considered to buy some and make one thing... eh. yeah, I'm still better in origami paper

Flapjackrabbit In reply to ErhanJo [2007-04-20 10:01:49 +0000 UTC]

Cheers Erhan Jo. At the risk of namedropping I have met the great man briefly. Tim Burton visited my old workplace (they were involved with making puppets for "Corpse Bride" at the time) and he came up to my workstation. He told me he liked my rabbit (yes the same one that's my avatar) but I was so starstruck I just garbled some semi-coherent description of what I was up to and I think he felt I was probably best left to it. Nice guy though...

ErhanJo In reply to Flapjackrabbit [2007-04-21 08:04:30 +0000 UTC]

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Flapjackrabbit In reply to ErhanJo [2007-04-21 09:59:04 +0000 UTC]

Sorry ErhanJo, can't help you there.
Me and Mr. Burton only met briefly the once, so it's not like we're close mates. He probably doesn't even remember me! All I can tell you is this was when I used to work for an English animation puppet-making firm called "Mackinnon and Saunders", but I couldn't stay the distance, so I doubt I even have influence with them these days!
Still, you could always find out what he's working on now and if you have the right skills try to muscle in ton the production team somewhere...I believe it's "Sweeney Todd".
