I haven't seen the book yet, did these pages go straight to color?

Yeah, they did. Initially I was happy about this but after seeing the book in print, I think my pages probably would've benefitted from a good inker. Whoever adjusted the levels on my page really pumped them up and the lines look a bit hard and harsh compared to the originals.

ah man, that sucks. Too bad you don't know any good inkers.

haha ahh nah, it wasnt an option to have it inked. They were colouring straight from the pencils. Wasnt my call.

Curious... if you drew them in photoshop, why don't you just do darker lines yourself?

I was trying to match the look of pencil artwork as I knew the rest of the book was being done that way, so I didnt mess with the darkening them myself really. Most of the early and later pages in the book by another artist dont appear to be overly darkened and blend better with the colours imo.
Erik Larsen asked me last year why I dont just ink straight on the computer, but its just a lot harder to get nice looking inks in photoshop than 'encils' i find... I dunno, one day I'll work it out! haha
But ive gone back to working on real paper for a lot of stuff now.

For PS inking you could maybe check out Brian Haberlin's Digital Art Tutorial on digital inking: [link]
Painter seems to have some interesting ink tools too, plus the page rotation is a bonus for inking.

Ahh cool, cheers man. I havent come across these before but will check them out. Do you ever do any digital inking in your pages? Touchups, etc?
Speaking of Painter, I did use it recently for inking a couple of pieces and was impressed with the liquid ink stuff as well as the scratchboard tool. I plan to use it more in future when the job calls for it.
The page rotation thing is cool but I dont need it when I can just rotate my cintiq

Score one for the rotating Cintiq! Didn't know you could do that.
And nah I don't ink anything digitally, unless it's something small I've forgotten to do, then I may just add it with the mouse. Still gotta get a tablet of some sort.

Great to know. Might have to make an exception in my boycott on Star Wars stuff (Episode 3 *really* tested my devotion) and pick this baby up

nice work dude. Just curious, are you looking for an inker on any upcoming projects? Would love to work with those lovely tight pencils.
And I haven't seen anyone else mention it, but the way the apprentice holds that lightsaber is fucking brilliant - whoever came up with that as a point of difference to all other jedi lightsaber-wielding - its just so strikingly different (and looks bloody cool!) What do you think of it?

FlowComa In reply to darrenclose [2008-08-11 23:23:05 +0000 UTC]
Not looking for an inker atm but will keep you in mind. Have you got a gallery of your inks anywhere online?
Yeah its pretty cool how he holds the lightsaber. Can't say I've given it too much thought though...

okay, maybe I have thought about it a bit longer than you ...
Do you have a copy of Witch King? I inked 2 issues out of that. That Ninja Turtles piece in my gallery is my inks, but apart from that I don't have a lot online, no.

Dont have a copy of the Witch King. but come to think of it, I saw your inks over Andy on Sulphur and they looked pretty good.
You should put inking samples in your dA gallery!
