Description
For , a bead version of her currently nameless dragon OC (if she does have a name then the title of this doesn't make much sense...)First of all I had so much fun with this! I had forgotten what working with wire felt like. It feel so much more natural. I was planning to use different shaped beads all through this, but her body shape was wrong for underbelly beads and seed beads works so much better on her face, so I didn't use as many as I had originally intended. Still, I love the way the feet turned out, especially the way the claws fold down when her feet are lifted off the ground (it's so cute )
I also tried using string around the attachment points of the limbs, so she is a bit more flexible than ones I've made before.
If you want a sense of scale, here's her on a hand What?
Materials:
Size 11 seed beads, size 15 seed beads, Rizo beads, dagger beads, glass beads, beading thread, beading wire of various thicknesses.

Oh my gosh Fluffy ;0; This..... this is just absolutely stunning!!!! I really adore this so much I've been looking forward to seeing her completed!
Just... I don't know where to begin, this just looks perfect, I really love her so much and I can't wait to receive her soon!
I'm so glad I commissioned you for a bead of her, you're really talented at bead work, and I shall have to consider commissioning you again in the near future!
Thanks again for letting me commission you

Thank you! I am really glad you like her. I had a lot of fun making her and it was fun experimenting even if a lot of the stuff didn't make it into the final design.
I am going to try to send her tomorrow or the day after, I will let you know when she (and by extension the last thing I made you) is in the post.
I am glad you think it was worth it And it really was no problem, thank you for commissioning me.

Thanks! I really enjoyed making it, and I had been wanting to do something with this character for a while. Also the colours were wonderful, I saw the beads and they just seemed perfect.

I couldn't see the character though- The link took me to my feed.
What did you use as a pattern?
Thank you for the llama badge.

:/ Hmmm.... It does seem to have broken, it did link to Rook's Sta.sh so she might have removed it or something?
I based this partly on this dragon fluffysminion.deviantart.com/a… that I made earlier this year, but there wasn't really any pattern involved. I just sort of make things up as I go along. I guess I usually have a rough plan and sometimes I make some of the more complicated parts separately first to see if they work.
No problem

I'm not the best at beading, (can't even make the dragon wing in a tutorial) but I love looking. Beads are awesome for dragons since they're supposed to have gem-like scales and all. Any tips otherwise?

Well, I know I spent several years making only lizards before I moved on to only making things from patterns for another few years so no-one starts out being able to make up their own designs.
They are, I find reptiles in general work for that reason and oddly arthropods also seem to work well, I think it's because they often have shiny exoskeletons and are usually brightly coloured.
Well, My main advice would be to practice from patterns and try adapting them first (changing colours and swapping out details, that sort of thing) before going completely on your own. I'd also suggest trying a range of techniques to find out which ones you are most comfortable with, I know I prefer wire but other work better with thread, and even with thread there are several stitches.
Here are most of the bead tutorials I know of on dA, hopefully some of them might help.

I've only tried with my thread, and I learned really fast that if I want a wire poseable, then I should use only wire. My first dragon ended up with a torn-up tail because I experimented on her. My brother's version broke up because I wore the thread out.

Fluffysminion In reply to Hessanite [2014-10-28 23:54:38 +0000 UTC]
Huh. I usually find that using bits of thread in an otherwise mainly wire sculpture makes it more posable... I guess I tend to reinforce wire bits a lot so it's hard for it to move much.
But yeah, I break things all the time. It's usually possible to fix things though, most of the time, even if it is a real pain to do so.

Not once the wire got tangled. I have since kept notes of my experiments.

That is a useful thing to do. I know I sometimes attempt things I have tried in the past thinking "I wonder why I don't normally do this..." only to have it mess up somehow and remind me why XD
I think the only thing I record tends to be the time it took me.

I do it with drawings sometimes too, but I tend to loose track part way through XD I guess that happens with most things really.

My way of keeping track is music. I'll put on 10-hour music clips and draw through them.

I tend to work too sporadically for that, although sometimes I do use music or audiobooks to keep track when I remember to.

Given that my bead projects tend to take between 12 and 200 hours they tend to be relatively large in terms of time taken.

Man, I was really craving some beading power this weekend. My dad's house has very little in the way of entertainment, unless you're alone and obsessed with Minecraft and can work a TV.
Me, I don't think I'd be able to stick to something that long.

Yeah, I know the feeling. The first night after the dragon when I didn't have any beads with me I couldn't sit still because I was so unused to not being able to bead.
I am not sure I would have started the griffin if I had known how long it would take me, but I enjoyed working on it anyway.

I'm not used to beading. I always was a traditional-paper-pencil artist, with the occasional clay thingamabobble thrown in. But I was really wanting to mess with beads this weekend. Hopefully I can get some decent thread or wire come X-mas, because it might be easier to use than something that's coming apart at the strands.

Argh. I remember the time I tried using the wrong thread for beading, that was an unpleasant experience.

I've been using sewing thread. Do you have a better alternative?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Fluffysminion In reply to Hessanite [2014-11-14 17:53:23 +0000 UTC]
You can get special beading thread that tangles less and is less prone to fraying, I know some people use fishing wire but that's more expensive and I have yet to try it. I am currently using KO beading thread, but if you google beading thread there are lots of options, and I haven't really tried anything else so I don't know how it compares. But it goes through seed beads and doesn't fall apart, which are the main things.

That's the stuff I use, if you were curious.

I personally find wire easiest to work with, but when I do use string it makes a big difference not having stuff that disintegrates everywhere and is always forming knots.

It's all what you're used to. I learnt to bead from some books that used wire, so that's what I now feel more comfortable with.

Hm.
It's interesting how irrefutable a learned thing can be. Like, I will go through periods where I draw pretty much only one gender or thing, until I try to draw something else and it's like WTH?! Currently, I'm trying to get into the groove with drawing guys again. Guys, unicorns, and possibly painting some backgrounds after Christmas.
