Description
This is D'cyl, =LadyofGaerdon 's dragon shapeshifter. His backstory's here, if you're interested in reading more about him: [link]Ok, so I tried to stick to the way I drew him last time, but he ended up with a mane instead, so now he looks really oriental, so I'm sorry about that, I don't meant to keep redesigning your character! I don't know how you feel about his lack of forelegs either, I would have put them in but he looked better without them, as I haven't quite got the hang of that particular part of dragon anatomy.
Don't ask what the glowing orbs are, I just put them in because I thought it needed a bit of magic, and something to fill some of the empty space.
I would like to ask something though, would it be possble to submit this as a contest entry? Because I'm so proud of this I don't think I could outdo it with what I've been planning to draw for the contest, which hit a bit of a snag with the discovery that I struggle to draw horses.
Anyway, whatever the answer is, I'd love some feedback and I hope =LadyofGaerdon likes it!

That they could be, with a dragon around C:
Fires are not uncommon when dragons are about, so that does fit quite well.

Haha thanks! The wings were the first part I sketched, after I'd done them the rest of the dragon seemed easy. You know the main reason the foot's like that is because of the way I had to twist the body to fit the wings on, but I'm quite pleased with how it came out. I had to crop the other foot out though, it didn't look as good and the leg anatomy was off.
Thanks again

Thank you! I love glowy things, so I really enjyed that part of it. I find the lightinng easier to do if the light source is actually in the image.

Yeah, it's funny that way. I guess it's because you can see where the ight is coming from.
Oh, thank you! It was like that in the photo I used, that was why I chose it.

This is the most beautiful piece that I have seen from you Fluffy!! I love the shading and the colouring and ... ... ... ... ... there were a lot more words and terms that I want to use, but I seem to have a bit of Bob Ross on the brain with the 'happy little tree' ditty running through my head. Keep up the brilliant work cause this looks absolutely gorgeous!!!!!!!!!!

"This is so... Happy little tree!" XD
Like that was it?
Well, earworm or no, thats for the comment! I'm really proud of this and since I got permission to enter it in the contest I'm hoping it'll do well. It is the best I've done so far, so what more can you ask for?

Yep, 'happy little tree' and 'happy little rock'. XD
It's in the contest! Yay!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I think supreme ruler of earth might rank highly on the 'what more can you ask for' list.

this is gorgeous. i came in because i LOVED your northern-pine-forest-y setting and sky. but when i read, i got more interested.
i don't think the oriental look dominates him. the mane and "fu manchu" visit the theme but he is definitely very western looking. nice blend.
i also think you made a good call with the yellow magic; the atmosphere is a lot more complete. great stuff! and i love your shading/coloring job!

Thanks! I'm really proud of that part of it, normally I'm not so good with backgrouns but I think this time I did the photo justice.
Why thank you, I'm glad it's not too doninating then. I was a bit concerned, but it seems I didn't overdo it.
I think so too, it looks a lot better with them there, even if I'm not sure exactly what they are ^^ And thanks for that too, the shading's the part I had most fun with, so I'm glad it worked!

I think this could be your best, or close to it. Best I've seen. The background is pretty, the anatomy is good, and the wings and movement are awesome!

I'd have to agree with you there, I think this and the blue eyes are the best two I've done by a long shot.
Thanks! I think the anatomy and wings are the two things I'm most proud of, I kind of jumped off in the deep end with the position I chose but the fact that I still managed to get it to work is something I'm really proud of.

Ooh, it's lovely, thank you! Yes, he does look a it more oriental than he actually is, but that's fine. I like getting to see him flying, and the colors are spectacular. I love the soft violet glow you've given it, like sunset, and the glowing orbs are a great addition - makes me think of this: [link] and just makes it so much more magical. The framing is great too, with the outlines of the trees framing him - you should be proud of this, it's wonderful. And sure, I'll submit it to the contest folder right now(yay entries!), but I do want to at least know what your idea was initially - the one you aren't doing because of horse anatomy - because I'm very curious.
Thank you!

You're welcome! I really ejoyed working on it.
Thanks for the compliments too, the background's more or less copied from a photo I took while I was away, the sun was setting and the trees were silhouetted and I could just imagine a dragon there, so when you asked me to draw him I had to put the two together. It's quite funny that it reminds you of that scene, as that wasn't what I had I had in mind when I put them there but it's quite a happy coincidence.
Well, my original idea was going to be a drawing of the scene where Wildfire charges into the clearing after Violet sets the forest on fire, but after drawing a sucession of rather square headed horses I began to doubt my ability to pull it off. I might still give it a go though, if I get time later on.
No problem, it was my pleasure!

Looks good. The colors are basic but catching. Maybe for forelegs, try smaller versions of the rear legs?

Fluffysminion In reply to Rekalnus [2011-09-04 07:54:37 +0000 UTC]
Thank you! And thanks for the advice, but it's more attaching the forelegs that I find hard, finding space for them and the wings on the same shoulders while still making the flight look vaguely plausible. I supose it's just practice, I know I can draw legs and I know it is possble to make it look right, it's just a matter of experimenting until I find a way that works.
