Vivi stared blankly at the blinking line of black on her computer screen as if waiting for words to mysteriously pop up behind it. She fiddled with the pen in her right hand, touching it lightly to her bottom lip which was stuck out in a slight pout. She blinked irritably at sun streaming through her bedroom window and a few complaints slipped into her muttering. She didn’t look up when the door was unceremoniously thrown open and her housemate waltzed into the room.
“Hello, sweetie,” he called in a sing-song voice as he crossed the room. He lifted Vivi’s hand and planted a delicate kiss on the back of it. “You look beautiful as always this morning.”
Vivi looked up haltingly from her computer. “Hi.”
Zen blinked, waiting for her to something more but instead the pair continued to silently look at one another. He slowly lowered their still clasped hands. “Um...are you alright?”
Vivi jumped and jerked her hand away, nearly dropping the pen in her other hand. She scrambled for a few moments until it was safely in her grasp again. She held it tightly to her chest and began babbling several half sentences, her face reddening with each one. Finally she groaned and said, “I just have a little case of writer’s block is all.”
“Aah, I see.” Zen leaned against the desk, humming quietly. He tilted his head, sending wispy strands of white hair over his eyes, and smiled fondly at Vivi who had stretched to bury her head in her arms forlornly. “How about this: if you let me take you out today, I promise you’ll have a thousand ideas written on your arm by nightfall.” A hint of pale purple peeked out from behind the fringes of her bangs so he added with a wink. “Besides I think it’s only fair for the public to see such a gorgeous duo every once in a while.”
Vivi chuckled and straightened up. She doubted going out would really help but she appreciated the gesture. Still smiling widely, she leaned closer to Zen and touched her nose to his. “It’s a deal.”
A couple of hours later the couple stepped out into the wild jungle of the city, arms linked together. Vivi stuck close to Zen as he confidently strolled through the streets, shying away from the bustling crowds. Lucky for her the congested paths soon made way to the clear and open space of a splendid public garden.
Immediately captivated by the beautiful sights, Vivi broke away and walked to an immaculate pond in the center of the entrance. She crouched to gently touch the water, sending ripples that rocked the delicate water lilies decorating it. She reached subconsciously for the pen in her purse. She started at a sudden chuckle from her right side. Zen had apparently sidled up beside her.
“Feeling inspired?” he drawled. Vivi playfully pushed his smug face away.
“Okay it worked a little but remember you said a thousand. I’m counting.” She stood up and held out her hand. Zen quickly accepted and they continued their leisurely walk, admiring the lovely flowers that managed to bloom valiantly despite winter still lingering proudly in the air. They left their sense of direction behind to wind freely through the maze of paths, bridges, and stepping stones. The slippery stones were particularly precarious for Vivi’s high-heels and resulted in more than one threatening moments of getting soaked but the peaceful scenery of the garden made it hard for their moods to be dampened. Eventually they came across a circle of trees that were still bare of leaves.
“Even like like this they’re so beautiful aren’t they? Kind of poetic...” Vivi mused. Before she could say anything more she was dragged to stand among the proud plants by Zen. He pulled her closer and placed a hand on the small of her back. She blushed and tucked a stray piece of amber hair behind her air, trying to distract herself from the cheeky smile Zen was wearing. She put her hand on his shoulder and let herself twirl together with him carelessly.
The wind waved lightly through the gardens and sent their hair twirling with them, occasionally quieting Zen’s voice as he started to softly sing. The lyrics were mostly nonsense and strewn with bright bursts of laughter, becoming even more jumbled when Vivi attempted to join in. Finally they broke down into a fit of giggles and had to stop. They held on tightly and supported each other as they recovered their breath. Between the random twitters and heavy breathing Vivi thought she could hear Zen’s heartbeat and hesitantly leaned into his chest. She jumped back again as soon as she did when he spoke.
“Oh. It’s getting late.” Vivi followed his gaze to the sky. It seemed to be slipping into the late afternoon and the sun was beginning it’s gradual descent.
“Ah, you’re right,” she murmured.
“We’ll miss the opportunity for our next stop if wait any longer. Let’s go, babe.” Zen took her hand again and they headed for the exit—or at least what he guessed was the right direction. She stumbled along behind him haphazardly, trying to say something.
“Wait, wait, wait. There’s more?”
Vivi tapped her pen softly on the book in front of her and glanced up at Zen for roughly the third time since they’d sat down. This time he caught her eye and grinned. She smiled back and finally asked the question that had been on her mind.
“This is lovely—I mean you know I love reading, but isn’t a library a bit of a weird place for a date?”
Zen stretched back in his seat and crossed his arms behind his head. He gestured out at the softly lit room. “Aren’t places like these the best places to get inspiration? You know, watch the people...people are so odd after all.”
“Yes, they get curiouser and curiouser,” Vivi whispered to herself automatically before adding, “But you’re a person too. Does that mean you accept you’re odd?”
“Darling, have you seen me? I’m clearly an angel.”
“Of course. I guess that makes you my guardian angel tonight then? How lucky.” Vivi closed her eyes and couldn’t help genuinely beaming at the thought.
They spent the rest of the day simply watching the people stream by in their small nook of the library. Every so often they took the opportunity to narrate particularly interesting individuals or interactions. This led to a tad too loud chortle of “Tweedle Dum and Tweedle Dee had a Tweedle Dum Tweedle Dee battle” and the subsequent escape from the two annoyed victims of their storytelling who shot glares at them all the while.
When they broke out into the cool night air, successfully freed, Zen ran his fingers through his hair and looked back to the library doors. “I wonder if Theodore and Eduardo will ever work things out.”
“Who knows…” Vivi replied. She paused thoughtfully while Zen stopped to order a couple steamed buns from a street vendor. With the warm food in her hands, a sky full of skies above her, a comforting arm tenderly wrapped around her, and a stout brick wall to sit on she finally continued quietly. “Maybe it’s best they don’t.”
“Yeah. I mean I would be pretty mad if my boyfriend was texting some random dude named Armando,” Zen agreed. Minutes passed with no response and he looked down to see Vivi fast asleep against his shoulder. Her arm was nearly completely covered in writing but one blank space stood out. The pen was still loosely grasped in her hand and was beginning to dangle precariously over the edge of her lap. Zen picked it up, careful not to wake her, and lightly traced the shape of a heart over the fair skin of her hand before tucking it away in his pocket. Then he let his head rest delicately against Vivi’s soft locks and closed his eyes to the nighttime cityscape of Seoul.
