Description
Finally, I did my first drawing for the 2019 composition challenge! Like my last limited palette drawing it involves rain. I don't know exactly why but I just enjoy rainy scenes despite umbrellas being a difficult prop. Working on this made me think a lot about using the lineart to help shading which is something I've been exploring more in my traditional art. Plus I usually do pretty soft/blended shading so it was nice to limit myself to a more cel shaded approach. The umbrella added some extra challenges since I wanted to make it look like an orange (or some other type of citrus fruit) slice. I lowered the opacity of one of the colors which ended up leading to the background choice because I needed enough color variety in the character but also wanted it to be clear the umbrella was transparent, and I felt like doing a solid color would make things blend into it too much. It really brought about the challenge of working with only a few colors, especially ones that are all quite similar. Definitely makes me appreciate all the entries I've seen for this prompt all over again lol. I also had fun with the shapes of the highlighting on the umbrella so I'd like to experiment with that more too
I think maybe one of the biggest things I learned from this first drawing was a lesson not necessarily to do with the actual picture and something I sort of thought I already understood. I had a certain idea for the limited palette challenge that I was really excited to do (and still am) but since I kept thinking about all the details and how exactly I wanted to do it January ended up passing, then February, and then almost March too. Luckily, somebody I follow on instagram (snazzy_colors) was hosting a contest involving limited palettes they'd made and the deadline was April 1st so rather than getting stuck even longer making myself wait to do this particular thing when I had it "perfect" I just let myself be inspired by one of their palettes~ I really like the results too! And it's not like I can never do the other illustration I had in mind, it's really not that complex of an idea, but I definitely didn't have to put stuff on hold like that

OOOh, I really like that you chose a warm palette for a rain scene, that's definitely a challenge. And I love the citrus umbrella idea!
