Wind blew gently through peaceful woodland scenery, rustling the grass and scattering the soft tufts of dandelion seeds. A woman sitting on a tree stump let it comb through her lilac locks as she calmly breathed in the sweet smelling breeze. After minutes of the serene quiet the harsh sound of a twig snapping made her eyebrows arch up instinctively before settling half heartedly into a furrowed look of irritation.
“How long are you gonna stand there?” she called. There was a brief crackling of leaves then a chuckling man popped out into the open, scratching the back of his head with one hand and waving with the other. A slight tint of pink colored his cheeks.
“Hey! What’s up, how ya’ doin? Pretty nice out today, huh? You picked a good spot!” As he blabbered his bright green eyes darted between views of the ground, sky, and brief intervals of his listener massaging her temple.
“What do you want, Sebastian?” she asked drily. Sebastian stopped and snapped his fingers, chuckling a little again.
“Right! Well I got invited to a party and...I have a plus one.” He paused and waggled his eyebrows at her. “Which is good. You know in case someone wants to go. With me. Do you anyone who might want to go, Arnya? Go...with me?”
Aryna crossed her arms. “Very subtle.”
“Please.”
With a sigh she pushed herself to her feet and planted a fist on her hip. “Fine. Maybe I’ll find a few drunks stupid enough to fight me. Lead the way.”
Sebastian ran ahead, grinning. Arnya could’ve sworn she heard a giggle too. She rolled her eyes but couldn’t help smirking when she followed after him.
When they arrived at the party Arnya’s eyes were immediately assaulted by a sea of fluttering silks, sparkling chandeliers, and pink—lots of pink. She scrunched up her face and scanned the room before quickly turning to leave.
“Wait, wait, wait, wait—” Sebastian snatched a rose from an extravagant arrangement sitting in a nearby vase and shoved the flower in Arnya’s face. “Look, it’s just like your tattoo!”
Arnya glanced down at the sprawling petals and leaves covering her shoulder. “Mine are better.”
“Aw c’mon, Arny give it a chance. It’s like a high class disco...a pink high class disco.” He stared at her hopefully. She sighed and trudged back through the entrance.
“Fine. And don’t call me Arny,” she mumbled before meandering over to the expansive buffet tables. Sebastian kept right on her heels and grinned expectantly. She reluctantly put down the piece of cake she’d grabbed and turned to him. “What?”
“Dance with me!”
“No.”
Sebastian slouched over dramatically at this response and slowly shuffled to the dance floor, peeking over his shoulder every now and then to see if Arnya was still looking. After a few more back and forths like this Sebastian seemed to get over it just fine and soon Arnya was chuckling to herself at his overly enthusiastic dance moves.
Hidden beneath the rambunctious music a slight ringing continuously poked at Arnya’s brain until she realized it was someone trying to speak to her. She shifted her gaze slowly from the hyper redhead she’d come with to a tall man with slicked back hair who was looking her over unabashedly.
“Can I help you?” she rolled her head lazily to the side and raised an eyebrow. This should be good, she thought. The man smiled.
“Hmm...you tell me.”
“I think that’d greatly depend on what you need help with.”
He tapped the glass in his hand and uttered a few small, gruntled noises Arnya had to assume was laughter. “You come here alone?”
“As a matter of fact I didn’t.” Arnya pointed to Sebastian, who was at this point scaring the posh partygoers.
“Oh, I see…” the man trailed off so she turned away, thinking the conversation over and done with until he abruptly added. “Would that be a problem?”
She blinked in surprise. “Excuse me?”
“I mean you seem like a very,” he paused then quickly winked and nodded at her exposed shoulders and rather bountiful bosom. “Outgoing person.”
She squinted and then promptly smashed his head into the punch bowl. He lurched back and fell roughly to the floor, clutching his head.
“What the hell??” he spluttered. Arnya crossed her arms and stared down at him.
“How outgoing do I seem now?” she snorted. She waved her hand at the growing audience surrounding them. A rumble of dissent rose up at her dismissive attitude. She groaned. “Don’t you people have something better to do?”
Just as she was about to punch a particularly disgruntled woman, Sebastian squeezed his way through the crowd. He grabbed Aryna’s wrist and hurriedly ushered her past the others, shrugging and smiling to the few that tried to actively stop them until they’d made it far enough to book it out of there as fast as humanly possible.
As they started slowing down Sebastian’s short bursts of giggling got to Arnya and when they stumbled to a stop they were both doubled over. She took a deep breath then laughed it out again. She threw back her wild hair and held her arms out to her sides. Her plump lips twitched into a sultry smirk.
“You wanna dance now?” she asked.
“Always,” he replied. They pulled closer and wrapped their arms around each other. They embraced sweetly for a moment before Arnya gasped and broke away. Her hands flew to her backside while Sebastian ran away, cackling.
She shouted after him, “Come back here, you ass!”
