Description
The characters featured here are: wandering merchant Sienna who specializes in fabrics and taste for travelling the regions in search of their natural oddities like this glowing Floura plant, Keone her loyal assistant, and Kaipo the trusty torthorse. I did this for the "Environmental Frame" theme in I tried to kind of put Sienna as the main focus using the bridge and the branch. This theme was interesting. I don't think often enough about where the viewer's eye will naturally go first which is one of the key factors in composition so yeah it was a good exercise to actively put my mind to it.Still getting used to watercolors (I need a LOT of practice) but it's a fun medium! I think my biggest issue right now is being patient, like with most things, and figuring out the right ratio of water to paint. I also worried about mixing the paints too dark, especially skintones, but I forgot that watercolor lightens quite a bit when dry so it turned out fine. Keone might have needed his skin to be darkened a tad actually. Definitely going to be trying to practice a lot more with watercolors (and composition of course) this coming year.
I still have six composition themes left...will I make it? Probably not. Am I still gonna try? Heck yes! Wish me luck huphup

It took me a while to figure out where the horse was It must be good at camouflage.
So what exactly are these ladies searching for? The elixir of eternal blossom?

Haha yeah I'm still new to watercolors so I forget how much the colors lighten. Although he probably does blend in with sandy scenery pretty well, so we'll just pretend Kaipo's a stealth master.
They were actually looking for the plant in the foreground, the light bulb flower aka the floura plant. It can be used to make night vision potions but Sienna probably just wants to use them as design inspiration.

Kaipo the camouflage horse!
Night vision sounds very handy, actually. But I guess design inspiration will have to do xD

this is fantastic! my favorite part of this piece is actually the tippity top corner to the left, i'm not quite sure about what it's supposed to be but I see a river and a rock structure + some foliage and I just really like the suggested details in that corner c:
I like to swatch all the colors I've mixed, but the only thing is that it takes a hot minute to dry and I can get distracted real easily in that hot minute, forget about the swatches, go in to paint and realize that the color is too dark/light.. patience is so very important when painting with watercolors >< gaahh
and of course, lots of luck hup hup hup

Thank you so much! That's actually spot on for what it's supposed to be uvu
I really need to try to swatch all the colors I'll need before starting instead of doing it as I go along and just swatch more in general before putting it in the actual drawing haha. Maybe I'll start working on another drawing in the background while painting this year so I don't get tempted to just rush things.
ty for the luck, I will carry it on into the new year
