"The Bubble Lotus, also known as the Morgan Lily, is an aquatic plant that lives in deep water. It has two protective layers that shield the blossom from water but when light shines near you can see past them and witness the beautiful flower."

The Morgan Lily

There is a myth surrounding the Bubble Lotus of an enchanting water nymph, Morgan. Morgan lived in a time ages past, a time when it was believed the water nymphs could not survive out of the water. She lived in a small, peaceful pond where small, peaceful fish would gather and bask in her warmth and beauty. She was rather contented with this life and didn’t think of ever leaving it until one day a small sparrow landed by her shore.

“Good morning, young miss. Did you see the full moon last night?” the bird asked flitting over to a nearby rock in the water.

The hanging trees had blocked much of the sky that night so the nymph had not seen. She shook her head.

“Ah, too bad, young miss! Too bad! It was quite a sight to see it sitting among the stars; though even I must admit it pales in comparison to the water lilies this year. You should come fly with me and see them!” the bird hopped enthusiastically to a closer spot.

“I’m afraid I cannot leave the pond, dear sir,” Morgan explained. The bird cocked its head in confusion.

“Why, that is too bad, young miss! Too bad! I will have to visit you again someday and tell you tales of my travels but first I must have them! Goodbye, young miss!” he squawked then took to the sky, disappearing behind the girl’s precious trees that had been her life for so very long. What lay behind them? she wondered.

She was beginning to forget those thoughts as the morning turned into midday and the sun was filtering through the leaves, casting soft light all around. The fish babbled playfully and life was full of comfort; an attractive scene to the handsome fox who waltzed in from the woods. He gracefully bowed to the water nymph before lowering his head to take a drink.

“Good day, madam. Did you see the rainbow this morning?” he asked once he had finished. Morgan shook her head woefully. “Well that just won’t do. I’ll suppose you haven’t seen the lilies too, which rival even a beauty such as you! They are free and bright on the water. Run with me madam and we will see them together!”

“I fear I’ll not be able to see the lilies, my dear fox. I cannot leave the pond,” the girl said once again.

“Such a shame, madam,” the fox spoke ruefully before turning to leave. “Perhaps another day I shall bring you one.”

“Please do, dear fox…” Morgan murmured, looking after as the fluffy tail swept away from her view.

Morgan sat in melancholy that evening, looking at what she could of the dim night sky. She did not hear the frog jumping towards her until he spoke.

“Good evening, dear…?” the croaking voice trailed off in surprise as the nymph jumped almost just like him.

“Oh I’m sorry, you startled me, sir! Morgan is my name,” she hurriedly exclaimed.

“Well good evening, dear Morgan! Did you see the waterlilies today?” the frog asked, entirely unabashed. Hearing of the delicate flowers once again broke the poor girl ‘til she was nearly sobbing enough to make her dear beloved pond spill over the bank.

“What’s wrong, what’s wrong? What has upset you?” questioned the frog.

“Oh, dear frog I’ve heard of so many wonderful things today that I will never get see. I cannot leave my pond just like all of you leave me!” she cried.

“But do you not grow from a tadpole just like me? Should you not live on  both the land and sea when we share such similarities? You cannot give up, find yourself some pluck and see the lilies before the world runs out of luck!” With those final words the frog hopped away.

Morgan sat quite bereft in her thoughts all the way until dawn but finally she decided “this cannot go on!” She snuck all the way to the bottom of the the pond and began digging a tunnel that would stretch on and on. She made these tunnels all through the land. She saw the bright disc in the sky, the light dance on rain, and the little squirrels run by. Finally she came to the great river. Her friends were all there. The bird flew high, the fox laid low, the frog sat upon a toadstool.

“You’ve made it!” They told her but she couldn’t hear so she simply continued to swim.

Many days of travel made the nymph weary but it didn’t matter once the elegant flower she’d wept for that night at last was in her sight, it’s petals of pure white floating in the murky water. She grasped the flower in her palms, overjoyed. She followed the blossoms all along the pond, tunneling again when she reached the end. She didn’t notice the water grow colder.

She swam ever slowly to the greatest expanse of water she’d ever seen. It was gorgeous she could hardly believe her eyes. Why had no one told her of this? She laughed merrily, creating an icy swirl in front of her. She hugged the lily to her chest.

“I’ll protect this forever,” she said. Morgan closed her eyes and never swam again.
