Especially with some Bolt Thrower, old school Amorphis, Benediction, early Mortification, Carcass, Obituary, Loudblast, Nile, early Crypstopsy, Suffocation, Malevolent Creation, etc. Just stay away from deathcore, boring paint-by-numbers crap.

Good call on the Mortification. Shame Steve was never able to get his voice back (last I heard) , but their newer stuff was still good in its way.

Well I'm not sure he ever really lost his voice as he abandoned his death vocals after Post Momentary Affliction because he wanted his lyrics to be more understandable and changed it to a more gruff shout. Not sure what the last album you heard was (last one I heard was The Evil Addiction Destroying Machine), but I heard from Ultimatum vocalist Scott Waters (who is friend of Steve and used to run a message board I'm on) that he was incorporating it in his later ones, but mostly still uses his gruff voice.
He still suffers from blindness and has to use a cane to walk because of his struggle with cancer, but last I heard it's completely gone.
And yeah, his more recent stuff (again, I haven't heard the last two he did) is pretty good, but IMO, his last great album was EnVision EvAngeline (my favorite).
