I found him there, just staring into the grey beyond. Even as I approached from a distance, it was clear to me that he had something pressing on his mind.

In the few years that I have known Tails, I learned that he rarely gets discouraged to the point of avoiding all his friends. In space, we faced a relentless enemy, yet as Captain he never faltered. Through his leadership, and the valiant efforts of our friends on the Typhoon and the aid of the other civilizations, we were all able to make it home. He was focused, and every day we broke new ground, taking back planet after planet, gaining new allies, and ridding the galaxy of those monsters. We were constantly gaining victories, and the people of the galaxy responded with their allegiance.

Perhaps that is what is bothering him. Everyone knows that this kind of fight is different. After all those months fighting in space to defend people's home worlds, we return to find this one embroiled in conflict. Besides that, even with all the effort Tails' squadron is putting forward, the air war is still at a stalemate. Even so, now that I think of it, the stalemate didn't seem to bother him before now. Perhaps he's just tired?

What a stupid thought. Of course he's tired. There's something else. Maybe he will talk to me? I know he trusts me. We have grown pretty close in the last few weeks after he found me again. I just hope that he won't hold on to what is troubling him, and just let go of those fears. Perhaps it was a secret mission and he can't disclose anything? What did he see? Did something go wrong on his previous mission?

Did he do something wrong?

I perched myself on the tall fence next to him. I looked back to see just how far from the airfield we were. He really didn't want to be disturbed.

Or maybe he knew I would follow him?

The afternoon sun would be setting soon. I only knew because there was a hole in the storm clouds which glowed with the colors of the evening.

Hardly a breeze. Not for long though. Smells like rain. I know that storm clouds mean bad flying weather. I hope they don't send him on another mission tonight.

I wish we could gather around in the hangar and enjoy a warm drink. I wish we could just enjoy the time we have with our new friends and relax to the sound of the rain. Maybe I can convince him to come back before lightning strikes him. Maybe I can encourage him and bring him back to his old self. I wish I could be the perfect friend.

But I know how naive that is. When Tails' father came to visit, I heard him say that the most difficult thing about being a grownup is learning to adapt to adverse circumstances. Since we were victorious in space, I thought we were already good at that. Now I see how wrong I was.

So that's it then. We need to be grownups. Instead of wishing for good times and hot cocoa maybe I should focus on helping my best friend through his bad times.

If only I knew how.
