Description
...for Verlidaine !First off, this title has dual meanings. Taken as a verb, it refers to Daine (right) speaking to my fursona in the picture. Taken as a noun, it's an opposite, standing for something that's been reversed or inverted. Namely, the dense apartment living found in a city contrasts with other potential habitat for an Aiyre (Daine's species, by Verlidaine ) might be, and foxes aren't known to live in apartments, either.
...so! I wanted this to be a speedpaint, at first, but I've never really been adept at those. Most recently, my 3-4 hour "Edge of Storm" foxstory.deviantart.com/art/Ed… left me unsatisfied with the finished product. As for the 1-2 hour coherent, appealing speedpaints that some other artists create, I'm far from being able to make those. This one took about 16-18 hours over the past two weeks or so.
In this picture, my fursona is visiting Daine in some kind of city apartment with a view of a centrally located park amid other high density housing or commercial office buildings. The pond may be frozen in the park, but snow cover is not present. I drew some little cars and stoplights for the city roads, and I used a snowflake brush. I suppose Mungo isn't that eager to share his space with a red fox, and so he's backed up over there until he can make up his mind. Daine is explaining some matter to my fursona, who is eager to listen. I think we'd also enjoy looking out at the snowfall in the winter night- but then the faces wouldn't be visible to the person viewing the artwork. (Actually, now that I think of it, I could have drawn this from outside the window looking in, but oh well. I like this view of the two in conversation on its own merits.) I really think it would be awesome to /be my fursona/ and of course visit, talk to, adventure with, etc. other people as their fursonas... so this is something of a recurring theme in my art. Of course, this is also outside any central canon, so the circumstances can be adapted however possible to each individual picture. I think the bookcases primarily serve an aesthetic purpose in this scene, since I'm not to sure about the feasibility of using paws to turn pages. However, it should be noted that Daine has a 3DS with Pokemon Y, which shows a shiny Riolu (Leon) in pokemon Amie. Also, there's a crystal vase holding a solitary yellow flower on the right side of the window ledge. As I understand it, yellow flowers can symbolize vivacity, happiness, joy, and energy. I wanted to have art of Daine (left, by me) and art by Verli (right) on the walls, as that seemed like a more appropriate form of decor than simply making up some color splotches or abstract thing just to take up space on the wall.
My own fursona is (c) to myself, and Daine (winged character on the right) is the fursona of Verlidaine , who has the copyright to this character. The cat on the left is Mungo, who belongs to Verlidaine . The drawing on the left wall is an artwork of mine, "An Evening Together" with details here: foxstory.deviantart.com/art/An… . (It features Daine, Verli's fursona and also SkySilky 's zodiac fluffsona.) The drawing on the right wall is a commission (c) Verlidaine of my OC Silvia and my own fursona. "Gone Fishin" is here: verlidaine.deviantart.com/art/… with details.
The bookcases were constructed with images from cgtextures, which also supplied textures for the rug, walls, and carpet. The rug was changed with a hue filter before dry brush / paint daubs filters and transformation (shift-click) to match the perspective. The carpet texture was rotated in 3D as a "postcard" and then overlaid as a clipping mask on the floor, which used a gradient. The bookcase images (four separate ones) were applied to rectangular prisms (3D objects), which were then scaled and moved in space and orientation relative to viewer. I used the Stroke layer effect on the rug and wall paintings. I also used a brushed aluminum texture as a 20% opacity overlay for a finishing effect. This artwork is (c) foxstory 2014, with all characters within belonging to their respective creators.

Thank you! This is a more recent change in my style as an experiment. Usually, I have lineart in my finished pictures.

Really like this one, I love the background first of all were you can see Central Park and all the buildings that are around it. I also love the touch you did of adding the DS system near the window, the bookshelf a are incredible as well, great detail on the books and wooden frames. So basically you have nailed the background but the only problem I really see is that your fox isn't really looking at something directly, I can see that the wolf is looking at the fox and this makes me want to think that the fox should be looking at the wolf. This is really the only thing that bothers me but it's nothing big. Overall this is a wonderful piece, splendid job and keep it up

Thanks. As for my bookcases, those were derived from cgtextures through some edits and filtering, as I mentioned in the description. I suppose I should have had the fox pupils facing right, then. Also, the "wolf" is an original species- an Aiyre, with a reference available here: verlidaine.deviantart.com/art/… .

wow so many detais! I love the perspectives here!
the city on the window is pretty good (I particularly am not much good with them, and also perspectives are hard for me), you did a beautiful work with them.
the detailing on the characters' fur is nice too, I like the way you use lights and shadows with fur in general.
the floor, rug, walls and racks are so realistic! they give a good idea of depth in the drawing. also, the idea of the frames in the walls are so awesome!
I see you took much time here! I'm sure Verlidaine will love it!

This is a lovely drawing and you can tell that you put a lot of hard work in to it~
the perspective on this is very nice and the background is well done. a few things that you need to work on, however, are the eyes and the direction the pupils are facing. Also you should draw drawing the lines smoother and more natural. the fox's tail looks a little stiff. The cat looks awesome and super adorable ^w^ another thing is the shading. Its lineless so try setting your brushes to a lower opacity and darkening the "invisible lines" such as adding a darker colour to the shaded bits so it acts like a lineart but blends into the character well enough to fit in. softer lines would also improve the texture of the fur, making it look softer and more fur-like. The room seems to lack shading making the characters seem a bit out of place. to fix this you could simply airbrush the parts you need to shade and it'll be done~xb
Overall, you seem to be doing a pretty great job! keep practicing!~<3

Thank you for the detailed response. Also, the "cat" is actually an original species known as an Aiyre. You can find Daine's reference by Verlidaine here: verlidaine.deviantart.com/art/…
I'll take into consideration what you said about the invisible edges. It seems you've suggested darker edges/lines in the shaded areas, but softer lines for other parts of the fur. I realize it's important to also shade the background, and this was why I applied some (but not nearly enough, apparently) shading to the carpet floor.
Thanks again, I'll keep up my practice.

The fox proportions are off though

Thanks. What would you say ought to be changed in the fox's proportions?

My my what a hard question to answer~ but ill do my best
The neck should be stronger (thicker) and it should flow into the back. The back is off because the front shoulders are higher than the back shoulders so it looks like the back is sloped. The mouth is too long and the tail could stand to be fuller and longer. I suggest that you take some time out and do some fox studies the talent is there you just need to refine it <3
