Description
Smilodon fatialis reconstruction. Based on Lynx and mostly Caracal. I love how the pointy ears make it look even more badass. It's plain coat also pays tribute to the old school lion-esque reconstructions.Related content

Looks like a faithful homage to the classic smilodon drawings and paintings made by no other than Charles R. Knight himself! ππI like the tan colouration by the way; to me it looks fitting for S.fatalis itself. Next time you should do your own homage to βLeaping Laelapsβ or the painting with the T.rex and Triceratops. Iβll give you kudosβs for those, if ever they come! πππ

The general look of this one really evokes Knight's murals.

Are you sure you didn't want to write Smilodon populator for this one? I'm asking this because the proportions seem be be closer to your Smilodon populator picture than to your other Smilodon fatalis pictures.

As intimidating as the sabre-toothed cat might be, you do still have to wonder how it can eat its prey. Those sabre teeth may be designed to kill large prey quickly, but they're also a double-edged sword, since they're not only fragile, but can get in the way when trying to eat.
Also, I do remember hearing in a documentary that the sabre-toothed cat's bite force is actually very weak.

Simple observation of modern cats shows that their canines, although smaller than those of sabertooths, get in the way of food items just as would be the case with Smilodon, because in the carnassial bite, the gape of the jaws is so small that there is no clearance between the canine tips. The lateral position of the carnassials allowed the animal to bite directly with them at the carcass, without the canines' preventing the animal from acquiring the food, just like modern cats. The problems for food ingestion that authors like the American paleontologist G. Miller in 1969 thought the sabers would cause to Smilodon were simply imaginary (AntΓ³n 2013).
