Because white is seen as the zenith of beauty. Follow the right artists and you'll begin to see a nice variety though.

great job with design, technique and the pose/anatomy. I particularly liked the stylised afro hair, don't remember seeing something like that before.

Thanks a lot! The stylization of the hair is something I've been playing around with a lot lately.

All of your characters are always posed so naturalistically though, or there's just, like, such a solid, believeable feeling to the way that they stand that I really love, and you manage to push it so much more than the reference pose, so that's always great to see!

Thanks! I just like to see naturally weighted poses. It's also the reason I never really draw women in heels. I think the (somewhat) relaxed leg muscles make for a more interesting silhouette. And I liked the reference. I do think the model looking directly at us made the overall pose feel more intentional though.

I love this design! She looks very natural and in her element. Something about this is comforting to look at. I don't know how to describe the vibe exactly, but she just looks really at ease.

The poses you draw look so fluid and effortless! If you don't mind me asking, what inspires the clothing designs for your characters? They look gorgeous, detailed, and very natural (like I could see someone wearing them in real life). AND THE HAIR, don't even get me started--I love blue and I love afros that's all I have to say ^^

I'm not always sure about the poses, so I'm glad this one is getting a positive response. It let's me know my practicing with gesture is paying off. As for the design, I'm typically inspired by fashion; both practical and impractical. I also like to blend sci-fi and fantasy elements when it suits me. Thanks for the feedback!

I think one of my favorite things about your work is that you render even simple poses like this so naturally. It would be so easy for this pose to feel stiff and unnatural, particularly in the legs, but it really doesn't feel that way, even though it's a somewhat awkward pose. Also, as always, the little details of jewelry and accessories add so much character to your designs

I don't even know where to start. And I mean this is a good way!
Your style of drawing is absolutely something I've never seen before and it's so damn inspiring and fascinating. Being a black female artist, I've also been trying to incorporate different races in my artwork. Every race is so beautiful to me and I've been working on my style of drawing to include different body shapes too.
Your work and your original characters are so unique from each other--I don't know how you do it. I look, admire, and analyze all of your digital works and think to myself,
"my god--I'd LOVE to see these characters animated *heart attack*"
This drawing above especially inspires me because you referred to it as "more lazy work". Which means you whipped it up without thinking twice about it (I tend to hesitate about a LOT of things, which may just be my downfall if I don't get myself together). I am a HUGE fan of your artwork if you hadn't noticed already. I don't know if you do collabs or anything similar to that or not--but if you do, or if you ever think about collaborating with someone....*whispers* You can always hit me up because I'm willing to learn new things from other artists!!
Anyway, thanks for sharing your artwork with us, I continue to look forward to more of your stuff!!
PS sorry for such a long message--I tend to talk a lot when I'm exited about something.

Thanks for the thoughtful comment! But, to clarify, when I said "lazy work", I meant work that I do when I'm supposed to be working on busy work. I left this and came back to it for several days changing colors and the simple patterns on her clothes whenever I'd get bored with a commission I was working on and just decided I'd post it so I'd stop messing around with it. There are certain things that I was set on almost from the beginning though; the hair and pose to be specific.
I think there are entire worlds unexplored in the spectrum of race and culture, so I think it's great that you're trying to incorporate more of that in to your work as well as body shapes. I think variety will only broaden your vision as an artist. You shouldn't hesitate though. Make sure everything you create is entirely for you and people that empathize with or understand that part of you will gravitate towards it. And as far as collabs go, I've never done any before outside of commission work, but I have done trades.
And If you ever have any questions or want any advice on methods/critiques on art stuff, I'm always around (kind of). I'm not the most knowledgeable guy in the world, but I'll do whatever I can to help! And thanks again!

Oh okay, thanks for clarifying that for me. I also have to tell myself when to stop messing with a drawing after tinkering with it for a while. You still did an a mazing job though!
Thanks for the words of encouragement! I'm starting to get into art trades, so whenever you're doing art trades with people--count me in! I need to practice getting my work done within a time frame if I plan on becoming an animator.
I'll definitely contact you for advice/methods/critiques, thank you so much and you're welcome!

First of all, awesome. you made this with sketchbook pro? how large do you make the canvas? when i try to draw anything within 8" or 800 pixels, the lines become unfocused. I need to practice more

FreeMech In reply to BigBenmonk1991 [2016-05-13 13:27:12 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, what he said. It's fine to sketch at a lower dpi (I sketch at anywhere between 150 and 200 most of the time), but if you want a clean and polished look, 300 is the way to go.
And thanks!

Excellent figure drawing FM. I just wish she were wearing leggings or jeans, I like to show cool art to my sister. The girl is almost naked so it might make her uncomfortable. Keep the women in mind when you make your art bro, they like cool characters like this too, only covered up a bit more.

Oh my God a girl has never seen legs before WTF?!
When I was a kid all the neighbours kids would be running around with just nappies on. No one cares.
Legs are legs, they're not going to hurt anyone.

I'm sorry that you feel uncomfortable showing this to your sister, but honestly, that's none of my business. I literally have an entire gallery of pants/shorts/leggings/dress wearing cool characters to choose from.
Not to mention, your idea of what women like is a bit narrowly conceived as I know women with galleries and fav folders full of things a thousand times lewder than anything I could imagine drawing, then I've seen women with fav folders and galleries full of subjects of a more modest and elegant nature. Just like everything else, their interests exist on a spectrum and you shouldn't assume what they want or don't want to see based on what you feel comfortable with showing your sister. Generally the gripe is about context.
And if we step back and take an objective look at this image, given the minimal context what exactly is wrong with the outfit? It's not like I drew her in a construction site operating a power drill. The background is literally a rectangle. You could imagine her anywhere you want her to be. She could be on a beach, her own island, a private yacht, or in a kickback amongst like-minded individuals. Let her have her vibes, man. lol
And thanks for the compliment about the figure, which ironically begs another question; if I start posting nude figure drawings, should I cover up the naughty bits?

What is your sister like 6? Lol. If she's a child I would understand your comment, but otherwise? Idk. Also, all of the "inappropriate" bits are well covered.
I'm a woman and I absolutely adore FreeMech 's work. Doesn't offend or make me uncomfortable at all! That character doesn't have any parts that I don't already know about lol.

Yeah, it is a bit strange since there is no nudity at all and we have no idea what's going on behind her other than butt, but idk. Let's not argue though. We should all agree to disagree and go draw something.

Me and my cousin shared baths until we became teens. We seen the neighbors kids naked.
That dude is weird and creepy. Kids don't find human bodies gross or rude, it's adults who apply their stupid nonsense.
