Ever since I found out about Dragons: The Nine Realms, this thought kept coming to be. Could Thunder be a descendant of our favourite black, cat-like dragon, Toothless. His daughter, Dart has the same colored eyes and similar black & white color scheme, and there is a chance that the dragons might have evolved over the years. I also believe that Thunder's rider, Tom Kullersen could be related to Hiccup .

I know that not everyone is existent about the upcoming series and how it might reflect on the whole franchise, but I'm going to give it a chance and see how the modern world of HTTYD turns out. Don't judge something before you see it, and how cool would it be if my theory turns out to be true.
