Description

Showing students that drapery is not as difficult as they think   Folds are predictable.  I was stressing the importance

of designing the big shape first and understanding what's underneath.  Don't just copy the folds you see.  It's a good idea

to ask if it reinforces what you're trying to communicate.  If it doesn't help; leave it out

I meant for students to not just copy what they see   Observe and design

I see. Just recently, I found this pdf, and have started doing the practice sketches inside. It's scanned, it looks from a very old lesson course on classical style. Inside there appears to be quite a bit of emphasis on learning from the masters, copying, and I suppose listening to any advice they might have. (You certainly look talented enough to consider a master at portraits)

So, from your posts, It looks like you actually teach art. Just curiously, if you don't mind, why encourage against copying?

Thx for the reply.

Glad you were able to find Bridgman's Pdf   The knowledge passed to me stems from Bridgman.

I was taught the Reilly Method by the late Mark Westermoe.

There are values to master copies.  The point of master copies is to copy and figure out how the master

solved a problem that you're struggling with or study an idea you're currently learning.  If a student mindlessly

copies ( Usually for homework ) they don't get much out of it.

Drawing is done in 3 stages.  The first stage is observation, then understanding the information and finally communicating,

which is when an artist makes a mark.  When we just look and make a mark, we skip the understanding phase, which really

stunts the growth of an artist.  This is mindlessly copying.  In order for an artist to progress, all 3 must work hand in hand.

I was taught and still teach observational drawing, but I stress the importance of understanding what it is the student is looking

at.

This skill carries over into an artist's career as well.  Reference becomes a tool rather than a crutch.  There are many artists who

are handicapped if they can't find reference or become slaves to the reference rather than the reference being an inspiration.

Hope this makes sense

I interpreted the "don't copy" part as don't look at something with folds and try and copy every little line you see just because it's there, but I could be wrong.

I think they meant to not copy the folds they drew in this piece and to either try to reference or imagine how it would fold with this knowledge
