Today was Kotoha's Erikae, or formal debut as a Geiko. Erikae means 'turning of the collar', and comes from the fact that maiko will wear red collars and Geiko will wear white collars. During Kotoha's formal debut, she walked to ochaya (teahouses), okiya (geisha houses), and shops she frequents in Gion Kobu (the hanamachi, or geisha district, to which she is attached) to thank everyone for their support. I followed Kotoha during this time with many other photographers as we tried our best to get beautiful photographs of this special day.Related content

Yes, she is wearing a wig. If you look right under her hairline, you will see a small line. That is where the wig ends
