Lings are like dogs, minus the barking and digging! They're able to perform basic tasks like level pulling and knob controlling as you say, but they're clumsy and easily distracted, so giving them a responsibility like machine operation would end in disaster. Lings have personalities comparable to dogs as well: they can be timid, friendly, aggressive, playful, anything along those lines.

Very, very rarely, Lings randomly (and then permanently) click into human-like intelligence. At that point, they generally become unhappy with their pet lifestyle. That's related to a story of mine, in fact!
