Ahahahahaha, this one is good! English is damn confusing though! How are you supposed to know how to pronounce a word when the spelling gives you absolutely NO clues whatsoever? Not fair! Think about it, refuse the refuse? Yeah, same spelling, totally different words! And what about bowl and owl? By spelling alone they *should* sound alike... confusing...
Still, this sign is funny, I wonder if it was intended to say this...

It's all about context. "The rider moped about not being able to ride his moped", "he wound the gauze around his wound" and "it was a minute change he noticed in a minute" are just three examples of how proper context is all that readers have to go by in judging how to say a given word. Even based only on this it can be fairly said that English is a complicated, confusing beast. I've enjoyed surveying its ridiculous, unpredictable, idiosyncratic ways for years now and will as long as I breathe .
Also, yes the effect was intentional. The shop owner said it was to see if people were paying attention, like the famous "I love Paris in the springtime" sign you've probably seen.

The beauty of a language that is absolutely illogical, oh yes, I can see that Thanks for all the examples, I'll go tease my mom who's desperately trying to learn English
I wasn't sure if it was one of those horrendous translation jobs or intentional. Love the store owner's humor though, seeing as it really was intentional The brain can play funny tricks on us and I love people who humorously exploit that

I love people with a sense of humor and the English language is a minefield of amusement, so when the two meet I know I'll have fun .
