Description
This is something i've been working on for a little while which came out much better than i thought. I'm a fan of the game runescape mainly for its many layers of lore and exploration. Recently with the return of the gods jagex have started touching upon the other worlds in the runescape universe and specifically calling them "planets". After much research into the memories and accounts of all the gods i've concluded there's a definitive structure to the RS universe, almost like a runescape "world tree". I doubt jagex themselves will get around to making official art on this for a very long time (if ever) so i decided to do it myself. I've seen a few people try to draw it up too which i took inspiration from but here is my depiction of the universe of runescape ^_^According to the memories of zaros, the universe starts at the bottom in the "lower planes", splits into 4 paths (1 for each elder god) called the "elemental planes" which recombine on the "higher planes" at the top of the universe, this is the structure in the middle. The large red cloud in the middle of the network is the abyss. Described as "a glue dimension which holds the other planes together" its depicted as a nebula the rest of the stars sit in with a chaotic centre which is the ingame location "the abyss". Originally i had planned on having red lightning reaching from the centre to the other planets to show its holding them but i couldnt get it to look right and preferred it like this
Lower planes:
- Frenesae: Home of Mah the elder god, it is the dead planet at the bottom of everything. Modelled off the ingame location and the concept art its just an ashy planet with faint streams of lava to show its lost most of its heat. I love the idea of it orbiting a black hole instead of a star (much like the impossible planet in doctor who) just to add that element of desolation. It also brings in the option to tie in the very old lore of the "runescape black hole" where bots and rule breakers where thrown into in the old days
- Infernus: Home of the demons, told by zaros as the first full world after leaving freneskae its described as "a twisted world filled with fire". Pretty much went for hell with this world but also added in a jet black obsidian moon as an artistic element
- Vampyrium: Home of the vampyres, the world right after infernus according to zaros, i liked the idea of making this and infernus share the same blood red star. Described as "a world with a blood red sky" and shown ingame and by concept art to be very foresty and mountainous, thats what i went for, 2 moons shown in the concept art too. It made sense to place this under a red sun rather than a violet one like most people do cus suns on the red scale have the lowest light intensity (important when your deadly allergic to sunlight), while those on the blue scale have the highest, plus red would compliment the red sky while blue would probably bleach it out
- Iaia: Home of the dragonriders, this is the world zaros missed on his first trek through the universe. I had originally planned to show this by having fields of asteroids (the failed proto-worlds) littered around almost cutting Iaia off the main path but honestly it didnt make sense for you to be able to see asteroids on this scale when stars are just pixels across. Described as a world with no stars in the sky its VERY low down in the universe, not much is known about it other than it has 3 moons and some marshlands. Funny enough i tried just doing a marsh world with patches of mountains but i messed up the levels, yet it still made a look for some reason i really liked so i kept it. On a side note i can easily see the airut home world being on the opposite side to this but there's no information on that at all so i have to leave it out for now
The elemental planes are split into 4 paths, difficult to show in 2D but the paths are supposed to go to the left, right, infront and behind of the abyss nebula. The left is the path of Wen, featuring new domina and teragard. To the right is the path of Bik, featuring naragun and tarddiad, i'm also certain the dwarf homeworld in on this path too according to guthix's memories but again theres no information on that so i have to leave it out for now. Infront is the path of Ful, featuring the only world we know of so far (muspell) and its twin suns. Behind is the path of Jas featuring kethsi and abbinah
- New Domina: Home of Saradomin's empire, the yellow sun on the left its described as a mainly water world with 100's of tiny islands. Its shown to rotate on its axis VERY slowly making the people have to keep hopping islands to avoid being caught in the deadly winter of its night side, which suggests its very close to its sun. Its supposed to have a large white tower being saradomin's palace, which i would place at the north pole so atleast half of it is always in the light
- Teragard: Home of the humans, the blue sun on the left described as "cold in temperature and in temperament" and given only the fremenik still call this place home i modelled it on "a planet of fremenik isles". Where the fremenik (vikings really) can undergo harsh voyages between islands through storms and dodging chunks of ice, also fitting with Wen being ice in nature. The world gate does describe it as "having strange devices crackling with red lighting" but i'm guessing that just a close up view, not something you'd see from the sky
- Muspell: Theorised home of Zammork, its thought to be where he went after guthix kicked the gods off of gielinor. Described as "a beautiful world dancing with fire" i went for a lava world but much less harsh in appearance. The twin suns adding to idea this is path of the fire elder, i also added planetary rings almost like fire themselves to add to the artistically beautiful nature its supposed to have
- Naragun: Home of Guthix, the world ravaged by the war that brought us the god guthix, its shown in artwork to have 2 moons and have chunks of land suspended above the clouds by giant trees. This was honestly the toughest world to make cus that is NOT an easy concept to capture the look of, it took multiple tried to get this one but eventually i got a version i was happy enough with. Placed on the Bik path cus its basically the world of trees and thats what Bik looks like in concept art
- Tarddiad: Home of the elves, one of the few other worlds we actually visit its a very dark and deep blue world sparkling with crystal structures as its natural elements. Went for a very deep blue ocean with sparkling land, getting it as close to the look of the ingame tarrdiad as i could. Also added in thin planetary rings of white crystals and a bright silver moon to add to the fact this is a beautiful world of elves that would catch the attention of seren. On the Bik path cus guthix seemed to have followed this path on his way to gielinor, passing this world on the way
- Kethsi: The ruined world desolated by the dragonkin for their abuse of the stone of jas. I went for a very stagnant looking ocean with burnt landscapes. Interesting feature is i added in the "isle of sann" from the ritual of the mahjarrat quest in the right hand side and left it open to suggest "mount firewake" is in the centre of the main landmass. Not really much is known about this world's inhabitants but i personally wonder if it is a possible home of the god Tumeken of the kharidian desert. I wonder this cus next to nothing is known about him and how he came to be a god, and here we have a planet which frequently used the stone of jas (the act of simply touching it created many of the gods we know) and yet no news of a god ever came from this planet. It would also add to this planet being on the Jas path cus the menaphite empire was located where Jas' body now rests
- Abbinah: Home of Armadyl, this was again a very tough world to figure out in concept and to actually make. Described as "a world with a shattered outer core leaving islands floating in the sky and an exposed inner core. The planet surface is dangerous but the only place to find water", i had to google alot of "broken planets" to get the idea right. Basically its a planet with a large chunk blown out leaving the core exposed, almost like tuska came along and took a large bite out of it. I see the main chunk as being armadyl's fortress and the smaller debris broken off from this chunk is the sky islands the aviansie are famous for. Stated by armadyl himself that kethsi is near his home world, this suggests that they are infact in the same solar system as only that would make it close enough to be significant to mention compared to other worlds
Higher Planes:
- Yu'biusk: Home of Bandos, this was once the home of all the goblins, orks, trolls, basically all the bandosian factions. Right now its just a giant wrecked battlefield of scorched ground and acid yellow pools from all the wars bandos subjected it too. However it was seen to be once a thriving world equivalent to gielinor so that makes it a higher plane. When i think of this world i imagine something big like saturn, big planets come with rings generally so i added them too. Also 2 moons which i could see bandos using as lookout posts for incoming threats. It also makes sense for this planet to be placed where it is cus being in the place where all 4 elemental paths meet, it faces threats from just about every direction. Hence bandos being a god of war would be right at home here
- Mazcab: Home of the gobies, art and ingame locations show this world being mainly reddish sand and rock but with an abundance of water. Strangely its also shown to have a pink/purple sky which (while not my first choice) does look interesting. I've placed it as the 2nd planet in gielinor's solar system for a good reason (gielinors solar system shown in the POH's large orrery), its a planet of good balance (making it a higher plane) and the people on there seem to be still recovering from their attack from tuska. Tuska was a god who physically travelled from planet to planet with gielinor being the most recent, however when you look at the gobies still mopping up their broken shacks you get the feeling the attack happened just a few weeks beforehand, these facts make mazcab very close to gielinor which could only be the 2nd planet
- Gielinor: Home of runescape, i was very nervous about doing this one cus we KNOW exactly what this world looks like. I wanted to go further than just the random mass of blue and green jagex came up with on their attempt at making the planet, so i designed the world map right into it with room for all the surrounding regions we know are there but havnt seen. There's also the moon which i was quite surprised to learn was zanaris. I did toy around with the idea of somehow adding in the lands of snow and sunshine either side but the more i looked into it i just couldnt say that they where physical places but instead other dimensions like the spirit realm or the afterlife
Overall i'm very pleased with what i've come up with and as best as i can tell until we're shown otherwise this is as good a depiction of the runescape universe as i can do. Would REALLY like to hear you guys thoughts or even counter theories on this ^_^

Dam Its a pretty cool idea but runescape may need to release something that will take you to these places such as a new magic book or a rocket ship

Actually runescape has released something that allows for travel between these places but most of the options on it are locked atm, that being the world gate. Its kinda like the RS version of the stargate, where most of the descriptions used to make these designs came from. Thinking about it too we actually have visited a few of these places ingame but usually only a very small area. There's a portal to mazcab on tuska's back, bandos's portal and fairy ring to yu-biusk, world gate to tarrdiad fresnekae and kethsi, vampyrium is visited in the late vampyre quest series, a very brief incursion to an infernus throne room i think in some early quest, naragun is seen in the world wakes and there's an upcoming quest involving armadyl's homeworld. That said though i would love to see the day when all these places are actually fleshed out into full on worlds to explore like the main overworld, so much potential that i hope jagex will make use of someday

Wow.... just indescribably awesome!Β
Β
Edit: why did you add stars in the background of Iaia? In you description you also said the sky is devoid of stars (except for their sun).

Thanks, glad you liked it ^_^
The main reason for adding stars in the background there was really just artistic continuity. In my eyes when i was making it, it just looked odd and unfinished having the planet on a totally blank background, not to mention it stood out when placed with the other pictures. In a similar manner if i was to be totally accurate Freneskae would have a chaotic cloud behind it and New Domina would have its sun dominating its background and the stars would increase in density the higher it goes. It just looked alot better having like a standardized background between them.Β The zoomed in pictures are more for just showingΒ the planets themselves while the middle one is meant to be the more accurate "larger picture"

Are you kidding, this is exactly the kind of thing I love! And.. I think Jagex should be doing a whole lot. Art of RS, without scale theory, etc. That would be amazing. A canonical look of the world Β Β Think about it... every time there's a new quest, a big wall-paper art piece of some landscape or other interesting mood-setting or descriptive art.
Β
I get your reasoning. Though I'd also love to see how different the worlds can look. Iaia could also have lots of (dark) nebula or asteroids behind it to make it not be in pitch blackness. All in all it's just an artistic impression, a lovely one, and I'm far from the only one! Maybe I'm a bit of a purist in that sense. If there's a movie about a historic thing in the past (be it a war, or a personal drama story, or something else) and they'd change some things without it really helping the story a lot (like adding a random romantic interest, or an impressive siege/battle that actually didn't take place, etc.), it's always a bit of a let down for me. But this world is fantasy of course, and they've even said they'd rethought lots of things about the multiverse (but not yet released anything to speak of, let alone extensive and comprehensive). Anyway, I'm rattling on way too much. Thanks a lot for this!
Β
Btw, I hope you don't mind... but I've posted this on Reddit too:Β www.reddit.com/r/runescape/comβ¦

I couldn't let this beauty be unknown there. Hope you don't mind?

Hehe i was wondering why this picture was suddenly getting 1000's of views. Ofcourse i dont mind, the whole point of making something like this is for people to check it out, the more people who can understand and appreciate the details aswell the better
As you've said jagex hasnt released anything concrete on the multiverse except the odd vague description or tiny ingame peeks, heck they've only just settled on calling these places planets so this is all upto personal interpretation. Plus on a side note nebulea and asteroids would look cool but i havnt quite learnt how to make them properly yet, still experimenting with this photoshop stuff XD. Honestly if other people have other thoughts on how this should look i'd love to see their attempts
Do hope one day jagex fully uses its other worlds ingames. Imagine if they completely opened it up to have 14+ planets to explore all as fleshed out as gilienor, each with its own brand of monsters, bosses, dungeons and quests. Maybe someday =3

Well, at least Mod Raven was one of them, he commented on the reddit post too
Β
Oh, I thought you would be able to make nebulae, the middle picture looks really quite good for that! I would also love to see more interpretations, who knows, maybe Jagex gets inspired by it

Hehe yeah, i read your comment when i noticed the view count jumped like 7000 in 1 day XD. Pretty sweet that a jmod had a look at it, sounded it was one actually involved in making the multiverse content too. Looks like the only planet that really needs redoing is abbinah, some interesting new information about the physical appearance from mod raven there. If we get some more information or quests, or even confirmation of a few more planets or moon names i might make an updated version someday =3
Lol no i cant make nebulae yet, let alone shape them to look natural. The nebula in the center is actually a nasa photo of a real nebula that i tweaked the colour of and expanded out with copy and paste

Haha, well, you could do the same trick if you wanted, just copy-paste nebulae, who cares? You've done a great job on it!

Yes vampyrium does have a red sky but its land is mainly forests and mountains. I've tried to indicate the colour of the planet's sky by the colour of the glow around it, as in real life that would be the only way to see the colour of the upper atmosphere from space

Pupppyy [2016-04-09 22:35:34 +0000 UTC]
This is incredible and so well detailed
In my mind, I pictured the map of the universe like having the main center filled with the higher planets, with four great spiral branches of the elemental planets closing in to this inner circle. Pretty much because the aspect of the galaxies looks so nice, much better than a straight line like some people seem to imagine - plus, the elder gods would want some symmetry to make their job of destroying and absorbing all the worlds a bit easier. I just wouldn't know where to put the lower planes... probably in the space between 2 of the branches I'd guess.
Anyways, in the structure of your picture, is there a rule to link each planet to one of the stars seen in the middle? Β
π: 0 β©: 1
gamez-x In reply to Pupppyy [2016-04-09 23:31:00 +0000 UTC]
Thanks, glad you like the picture ^_^
When they started talking about the other worlds as planets i went through quite a few different ideas on what the structure would be like. At first i thought about a large solar system but armadyl's line "kethsi is near my home world" wouldnt make sense due to the nature of orbits. Galaxies do look cool and if i was a god making the worlds its how i'd go about it too. But its during the quest "Fate of the gods" we get this picture. The memories of zaros you collect after the quest detail his trek across the universe from freneskae to gielinor saying there's a definitive path that goes up, splits into 4 which recombine at the higher worlds. This whole idea of defined paths really remind me of "the world tree" from the thor movies/comics and thats where i think jagex are taking inspiration from. I was gonna add paths to the picture to show this but it just didnt look right. Thinking about it now you could make it a galaxy with 4 branches which spiral and reach upwards (like a hollow ball instead of a disc) with the black hole at the root like real galaxies but i'll save that for when there's alot more worlds to map on XD
As for how to find each planet on the map, you have to use the full view to see the planets around the stars but i did try to make it so each planet has its own unique combination of colour/moons/rings. Plus i tried to arrange it so each planet's picture is near its placement on the map. So for instance at the top star you can see theres 1 planet with 2 moons and another with just 1 and so on. At first i was gonna put names on the map but it just looked way too cluttered, thats why i put all the research and explanations in the description instead =3

wouldnt teragard be earth as well? cause there is a part in lore that says camelot comes from that place.

These where my thoughts at first too when looking at teragard and there may be some truth to it. The name itself is made up from "terra" and "midgard" which are both names of earth, literally it means earth world. But that description from the world gate saying "you see many strange devices crackling with red lighting" and another part of lore saying it has some kind of black hole as a power source says this is probably earth-like but not exactly the earth we know
Also i'm not sure if its specifically stated if camelot or places related to it like the fisher realm and britain are part of teragard but its definatly where i'd place them aswell

Very cool representation of the many planets found in RS lore! Was great reading through your research and reasoning for where and why you placed the different planets where you did. Got me thinking how cool it would be to have an interactive map of exactly this on the official webpage. Being able to click different planets for screenshots (assuming they have in-game locations) and information about the planet and it's inhabitants.
Perhaps something we will see once Sliske's Endgame comes to a close and the awakening of the elder gods goes into full motion.
Great job!

Hehe thanks, it sure has come a long way from the days when runescape simply called these "other realms" like they're just an endless stack of alternate dimensions. Yeah it would be amazing if they used this on the official site, an interactive map is exactly what i'd use it for too. This is why i love the RS lore thats happened recently cus for years we've heard the names of these gods and guessed at who they are but now they've been given definitive forms and we know who they are and their history and stories of how they came to be. Now they're doing the same with the RS universe, touching on it bit by bit until hopefully we see it in-depth someday
Would be cool if jagex came across this someday and hear their take on it just to see if i was even close to whatever they have in mind. If they did want to use it on their site i'd say they're more than welcome to ^_^
