Description
I wasn't sure when or how to introduce this guy to Deviantart, but I decided to do it today and with this picture, so here you go. This is Issac Waters, one of my oldest original characters that I've made.-------
Edit 4/29/17: Huge thanks to ConstructiveC9669 for reviewing Issac. To be honest, I didn't actually see it until 2 weeks after it was posted, but regardless, thank you! I've change the original art(though I will be uploading the old piece for nostalgic reasons), fixed his arm, and took my time with the background(cause shoot, the old background sucked). Regarding the background, that school of fish killed my hand, like shoot. Also, sadly, I for some reason couldn't get the tail to look as nice. Sorry :') I also feel I need to explain some crap.
- The chlorine allergy only applies to high concentrations, so he is safe taking a shower/bath and all that.
- Regarding taking a bath, turning into a merman hurts more than turning back(turning back is just a little uncomfortable, while turning into a merman is straight up painful), and he takes Advil before heading in the bath.
- Muffin, you pronounced Dana Point wrong
- I also noticed a lot of people pointed out that he looks like a merman Onceler, and I've only got one thing to say
Shoot, you guys are right
-------
Name: Issac Waters
Age: 16
Gender: Cis Male
Birthday: October 24
Species: Merman
Ethnicity: Korean
Sexual Orientation: Heterosexual
Appearance:
- Medium length black hair(appears navy blue under sunlight)
- Bright teal eyes
- Very skinny, scrawny, and anything but muscular
- 5 feet 8 inches
(the following only refers to his merman form)
- His tail's navy blue with violet and green mixed in
- Hands are webbed and nails are claw-like
- Ears are violet fins(the move to convey emotion, kind of like a cat or dog)
- Two Violet dorsal fins side-by-side(due to a recessive gene passed down from one of his relatives)
- Violet forearm fins
- Has three pairs of gills on his ribs(outlined in scales)
Strengths: There's a select few thing that Issac's good at without having to turn into a fish. For one thing, he can surf(he doesn't do it anymore for obvious reasons), sing very well(this is mostly due to him being a merman), play ukulele, and is great at writing. As a merman, he can breathe underwater(duh), see very well underwater, and swim pretty fast.
Weaknesses: Due to being a merman, he'll sprout fins and a tail if he's wet, but it's not like in H20 where one drop of water will turn him entirely. Only the part of the body that gets wet will turn(for example, if his hands get wet, only his hands will change). A sudden burst of adrenaline may cause him to turn(most of the time he just sprouts gills). And he also can't cry in public, because his tears turn to navy blue sea glass once they leave his eyes. And he's also had to sit out of numerous dissection labs in marine bio due to the fact that the smell of dead marine animals will cause him to faint very quickly. And as you can imagine, a fish tail in place of legs isn't the best way to get around on land. He also sucks at math.
Likes: The ocean, swimming, singing, playing Ukulele, California Rolls(don't think about it too much), Soul Eater, long hot baths(they prove to be very relaxing).
Dislikes: Math, swimming pools, crowded beaches, and the transformation into a merman itself(its extremely painful, as one can imagine).
Personality:
- Laid Back
- Beach going
- Chronic Procrastinator(though he genuinely does care about school)
- Sweat heart
- Confident in most everything he does
- Kind of a dork
Backstory:
(Note: The reason I originally left the backstory as it was was because I was writing a book with this character, and I didn't want to give too much away. But regardless, I will be fleshing it out a lot more this time around. Think of this as a preview, or a "back-of-the-book" summary)
In the universe Issac's story takes place in, merfolk are a race that has always been kept secret from humans. Mostly because, back in ancient times, the race was cursed to be born human and remain human until they turned 16. At that age, they'd stay human as long as they were on land. For some, this seemed easily avoidable; just stay in the water. But it wasn't that simple. Along with the curse came what the merfolk call "the longing". It was an unbearable feeling of homesickness that inflicted them on land and in the sea. Whenever in the ocean, they'd long for the land. Whenever on land, they'd long for the sea. So it came to pass that merfolk were scattered about the world, both in its oceans and in its beach-side cities. Issac was born in one of these beach side cities.
When he was only four months old, Issac was found abandoned on the beach, wrapped in kelp leaves, when only four months old. The reason was that his mother simply couldn't raise him. She made a promise to herself to find him again one day, when she could care for him like a mother should. Issac was found by another woman walking down the beach, who turned him in to a local adoption agency. But of course, no one ever came to claim him. And they had no leads, except for the seashell necklace found around the baby's neck that read what they assumed to be his name; Issac Waters. After a few weeks, Issac was put in foster care.
After a few years of being shipped from foster home to foster home all over Orange County, he went to live with a family in Dana point. The father got him tested for allergies, and this was when they found out that Issac was allergic to pool chlorine. This meant he couldn't go swimming in pools, hot tubs, pretty much anything with high concentrations of chlorinated water. The family he lived with at the time had an Olympic sized pool in the back yard, so they sent him back just to be safe.
After a couple more years, he finally ended up back in Laguna Beach, California at the age of 15. This time, he was living with Nora Primber, a single mother of two who owns a surf shop by the Montage Resort. This was where he took up surfing, a passion which he came to love. Especially since it allowed him an excuse to visit the beach more frequently. This is how he met one of his best friends, Duffy(yes, that's his actual name) Tyrel and Emma Jackson, a local Mormon girl that he has a crush on. It was in late October, when his sweet sixteen rolled around, that he found out who he was. Or rather, what he was.
On the morning of his birthday, he woke up with extremely sore legs. To relieve the pain, he decided to take a hot shower. This wasn't the first time her turned, though. Instead, he ended up almost "choking to death", and turned off the shower head and stumbled out of the stall to try and breathe again. It was a shame he didn't notice that a few scale had sprouted from his legs, because him and a friend had planned to go surfing that day for his birthday. Both Issac and Duffy had been out in the ocean, when suddenly Issac's legs cramped up. Trying to tread water was futile, and Issac ultimately ended up going under. You can imagine his terror when it finally happened. It was the first time Issac had fully turned.
How he got back onto land is a bit of a crazy story. It involves Duffy fainting at the sight of a friend turned fish, and an awkward moment when Issac suddenly turned back while sitting on his surfboard. Why was it awkward? Considering Issac's swim wear had torn in half when his legs turned to a tail, I believe that's explanation enough. Issac and Duffy bold had to keep it all a secret. Even from Emma. And trust me, this is the most difficult part. Especially when Issac, as per all merfolk, suffers from the homesickness tied to the curse.
-------
So yeah, here's Issac. The only thing I really struggle with when drawing him are his eyes. You know, since my style consists of large, anime-like eyes and he's suppose to be Korean...
It's fun for me to draw him(and mermaids/mermen in general), so you may see a little more of him and my other aquatic characters.
Merpeople!
