Description
A few years ago, I came across an article about an artist from Lebanon that decided to highlight the absurdity of gender inequality by creating a series of images reversing the gender roles found in old ads from the “Mad Men” era of advertising. This got me thinking about other areas of pop-culture and media where gender swapping the subjects might provide a new perspective on familiar images.
Growing up, I’d always been a fan of the cover art found on old pulp magazines from the 40’s, 50’s, and 60’s. They usually depicted “manly” heroes resembling rectangles of testosterone and courage, and women who personified the wilting damsels in distress. So naturally, these seemed like fertile grounds for similar gender swapping experiments.
Here’s a copy of the original image I decided to work with, as well as my gender swapped version. I’ll leave a link to where you can order t-shirts, prints, or stickers. www.etsy.com/shop/GeekDenArts
