Thanks! I can't take full credit though. Photoshop helped me cheat with guides and such XD... and unfortunately I didn't learn as much as I could have as a result. But, some day I'll pick up this practice again.

Her hair looks so realistic...the softness, the flow. This is awesome.

Although it can be tedious, hair is really satisfying to do using a reference.

I thought i was a photograph....
why do you wanna speed up?

GenjiLim In reply to Excidart [2010-04-06 20:23:19 +0000 UTC]
Hehe, it was based on a photograph, which is probably why it looks like one :]
Speed, for me, is a way of measuring how fluent I am with portraying color and details. If I create similar paintings in a shorter amount of time, I'll know I'm grasping the basics better. That's how I see it at least.

Hey, I checked out your gallery and you have some interesting work.
I must apologize though, because I don't think you use techniques and styles that I'm comfortable and/or familiar with. I better with commenting on more traditional-looking paintings which deal with figures, lighting, backgrounds, etc. I'm not very good at studying vector art, graphics, and logos. :L

are you good at pencil drawing?

GenjiLim In reply to Excidart [2010-04-07 21:55:53 +0000 UTC]
Heh, thanks I'm glad you think so. If you think I'm good at painting then you'd probably think my drawing ability was good too. In my opinion, I still have a lot to work on in both areas.
If any painter is good at painting, I'd very much hope they'd be good at drawing too — people typically need to learn to draw well to get the basics down!

Excidart In reply to GenjiLim [2010-04-08 07:14:12 +0000 UTC]
Oo...
i get your point...
you mean drawing is the most fundamental of everything?
but i think you have already master that...
look at all your painting is all like photorealism....

GenjiLim In reply to Excidart [2010-04-08 16:22:54 +0000 UTC]
Yep, being able to draw well is key!
Hehe, thanks for thinking I'm a master at drawing, but I'm far from it. Studying and copying photographs is one thing. Creating entirely new figures from scratch is still very difficult for me.

IT's very-very realistic, and girl has so nice face, her hair is so wonderful!
But, I think, compared your version with the original, Your portrait has a bit problem in her chin. This portraits' chin is more assimetrical than the original: the line of the lower chin isn't similar with the original.
I think I should tell (write) you, because this picture is very realistic, and I think you want to see every little parts totally perfect, same as the original, or in the real life.
However I must congratulate you, This is a very great work, I like it

Thanks, I appreciate you offering such a critical eye for detail. I touched it up a bit.
Even though I am doing my best to pay attention to detail, the reason why I do studies like this isn't necessarily to get everything perfect, but to get an understanding of portraying realism – i.e. practice with colors, textures, shapes, and shading, etc.
Normally, getting everything right in a study wouldn't be that big of a deal to me, but since this one looks so nice, I don't mind making it look even nicer : )
Anyway, thanks for the positive feedback!

It's wonderful! In the original photo her eyebrows are a bit thicker which might account for why her forehead here looks taller. No, I did not just click back and forward between the two pictures for several minutes. That would just be creepy. I definitely though this was a photo originally. The skin texture is amazing, how did you do it?

GenjiLim In reply to silvenes [2010-04-01 23:34:28 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, you're right about the eyebrows...
I made some minor adjustments, but it still looks slightly off. It's not a big deal to me though. I like how it came out

silvenes In reply to GenjiLim [2010-04-01 23:41:51 +0000 UTC]
wooah, da grouped your replies and it was surprising. After a few more clicks back and forth I believe your painting has a somewhat rounder forehead along the hairline than in the photo but pssssssft. I agree, it's wonderful and looks excellent.
I should try to use the soft round brush more but I just don't like it and every time I use it I just start disliking it again which is unfair of me since it really is a practical tool. I am relatively familiar with custom brushing it, though. That is one of the few ways in which I consistently experiment. U_U. I'm horizon expanding. I'm going to go molest your tutorials now. With my brain.

Ah, it's good you're familiar with custom brushes. You're a step ahead of many digital drawers.
Lol, uh oh, should I call the police to protect my beloved tutorials? XD
