I'm impressed by the fluidity of the inking, and your colour work is great. The background adds a lot to the atmosphere but my one criticism would be that it seems just a little flat -- as if he's standing posing in front of a board painted to look like a stormy sky. However, the shading works perfectly with the background lighting (making it look less painted-board-ish again), and I am in awe of your grasp of musculature anatomy. He's got a fantastic expression, too -- I can hear the "GRAAAARR!" from here. Great work!

I share your pain -- I frequently wimp out on backgrounds and stick in a gradient, filter, you name it -- something horribly lazy, anyway. It's a major weakness and something I'm trying to work on. Unfortunately the background can really make or break a piece, so I really should try and stop being so utterly half-arsed on 'em... This one doesn't look 'bad', I should add; it just seems a little flat, to me. It's a good effect on its own merit (really brings out the character), but I suspect not necessarily what you were going for.
