Description
For . I admire her work tremendously, and I believe brush inking fits her style really well.Wow, am I glad to get that monkey off of my back!
Most of the illustrations were done on a moving bus. That's what happens when you have a three-hour-a-day commute.

Pens and nibs are good too, but it's a pain in the neck to wait for the ink to dry all the time.

Naw... A pen draws a thicker bead of ink, even though the line width may be thinner.

Maybe it's because you apply the ink too thick, or maybe you're usnig a crappy brush, though I wouldn't know.

no, my brushes are super leet brushes. my pen nibs are just very fine, and my ink is quick drying, so ANYTHING i do with a brush automatically leaves more ink than my nibs.. unless the brush oly has one hair on it. which, you know.. would be time to get a new brush.

Which brushes do you use?
Maybe you're loading the brushes too much...

Inking frightens me because I have a hard time using the pens (shaky hands). I'm gonna try my hand at brush inking when I get the courage up.

You win!
Me and pens don't get along well, but with a brush I just may be able to get used to how much pressure I need to use for the broader and thinner lines. One of my biggest problems is just that, getting the right lines to represent the lighting and depth of the drawing itself. Lol all my lines are the same size (big and thick) cause I can't judge the pressure with the pen, and from what I have picked up on inking variations in lines are a good thing.
Thanks for the tutorial, now I have a use for those paintbrushes I get every Christmas.

Question: So, when I'm inking but not drawing any lines at the moment (like say I'm thinking about what part to do next or letting the lines dry a little bit), should I keep the brush in my cup of water? Or just set it aside on a piece of towel or something?

GH-MoNGo In reply to faroresama [2006-10-04 23:31:06 +0000 UTC]
I'd say wash the bristles off, then store it horizontally on some paper towel. You don't want to have the brush standing on its point, or it might bend the bristles.

ummm....if you test the brush on the scrap paper, much of color from it will go away. Meaning that the next strove youre going to do looks totally different, no matter youve done it exactly the same way.
And thats why i hate using brushes.

You don't stroke that hard... If you test it, it will give you a general idea of what the stroke will look like,

What brand of brushes would you recommend? Currently I use speedball nibs and ink.

Winsor & Newton Series 7 Size 2, but it can be kinda expensive. It's definitely worth the price, though, and if you take care of it, it should last you forever.

Sweeeeeeet. Thank you so much for doin this up for me! I love how simple it is... just goes to show how much my mind doesn't work in ink. It still scares me. I will definitely give it a shot though. I've got some shopping to do.

I guess we'll just have to find you another monkey then.
It's a good tutorial, and while I know I'm too messy to try any kind of inking that is not contained in a pen or a computer, it's still a good tutorial.
