A few weeks had passed at this point and yet the Brumby still traveled with him. They’d most certainly grown closer and Eir had grown older. Their hopes of finding her herd were little to none at this point. The leads were nothing more than… well. Nothing really. They had no way to tell where she belonged. So for now she simply belonged to them. Ragnarok felt bad for her, truly, he did. He loved how bright and curious she was. How she always found something fun to do as well. She never seemed all that bothered about not finding her herd. It was rather interesting to him really. He wondered if she even cared to. Eir was so attached to Sif, he wondered if she just didn’t want to leave her and part of him hoped that was the case. He was growing very attached to what he was starting to consider his herd. Things had been so nice and simple recently. Just moving around from watering hole to good food and then back to a watering hole, maybe taking a different route to an old one. It was nice.

It was one of those days, headed on a different route to an old favorite spot. They were following a river that was supposed to lead them into a forest surrounded by greenery. Eir had gotten distracted as she ever did, calling them over.

“Look at this! What’s this?” She asked, head held high and ears up as she looked at the odd barrier that was between them and some other animals that seemed to be happily munching away on some grass. Goats and pigs and chickens filled the pen.

“It’s a human place. We don’t need to bother them.” Ragnarok explained, pausing some distance away as he observed. “Come on, Eir. It’s not a safe place to be. Humans might see us or they may have dogs.”

“Shouldn’t we help them though? They seem trapped.” Eir asked, rearing slightly to see over the fencing that was right at eye level for her. She huffed a little as she instead lowered her head after that.

“Well, uhm…” He muttered, not sure how to reply to that.

“That sounds like a yes!” Eir called and darted to the gate before anyone could stop her. It took her a second, but finally she found some rope that seemed to be keeping the gate shut and managed to rip it off, pushing the gate open after.

“Eir!” Sif cried out, not happy at all as she followed after the filly into the pin. “What are you doing?!”

“I”m helping them! Go! Be free!“ Eir insisted, herding the animals out towards the open gate. The goats bleated as they ran, not caring for the mare that stood in their way. One of their horns caught her shoulder, cutting it open. Ragnar barely managed to get out of the way in time, having just been coming through the gate. He was quickly over to Sif’s side as soon as the small goat stampede was over however.

“Eir! That was dangerous.” Ragnar scolded, huffing softly at her. “You can’t just do stuff like that.”

“I’m sorry… I didn’t mean for anyone to get hurt…” The filly murmured, head down and ears back. She felt so guilty as she watched Sif’s wound. “H-here, let me go find something for it.” She said before running off. The adults had no chance to stop her before she was over in the human’s herb garden, right outside their window. She grabbed what she needed and darted back, quickly applying it to the wound to help stop the bleeding and prevent infection. “See, that should help the sting too. I’m really sorry, Sif.”

Sif sighed as she looked over the foal she’d really started to consider her own. “It’s okay, but you have to listen to us better.” She insisted. “It was luckily a small scratch, but it could have been worse or you could have gotten hurt. A farm is not a place to play.”

“Okay.” Eir agreed, nodding sightly.

Ragnar was about to say something when the farm house door opened and a human came out yelling. He instantly went into protection mode, rounding the two up and forcing them to leave the pen they’d still ben standing in. He kept himself between them in the human, especially as he heard a dog barking in the distance. He made sure they all ran until they were far, far away. He no longer knew exactly where they were, but he had a general idea.

“Well, that was… a time.” Sif grumbled as they finally slowed to a walk, feeling tired and her leg aching a bit still.

“Both of you are okay, right? Other than where that goat got you, Sif?” Ragnar questioned, concerned for them both.

“Yes, I’m fine. Just a scratch.” Sif sighed. “I can’t believe that goat did that, honestly.” She shook her head, shifting to look at the scratch on the back of her leg. It wasn’t too deep and with Eir’s knowledge on herbs, she’d be healed in no time. It was already starting to work Sif was sure.

Eir was trotting a small distance ahead, never too far, but she really did like to wonder it seemed. Her attention always caught by something or other.

“Not too far, Eir.” Sif called to her, to which the filly quickly returned. She went back and forth, going ahead before coming back. She’d gone particularly far ahead when a sound caught her attention. She paused, ears swiveling as she tried to find the direction it was from. “Eir!” Came another call, calling her back. She didn’t respond though, instead taking a couple steps towards the sound.

“Sif, Ragnar, I think someone needs help.” She called over her shoulder, but didn’t move.

That caught both of the adults attentions, causing them to pick up pace to her side, ears on alert in turn.

“It sounds like a foal…” Sif murmured after a moment.

“They sound lost.” Ragnarok murmured, moving forward and following the sound. Sif and Eir moved after him, close to his side and Eir pressed against Sif.

“Are they okay?” The filly questioned.

“I’m not sure.” Ragnar replied. “We’ll help if we can.” He comforted Eir.

It didn’t take them long before they found a foal all on her own. She looked as if she’d been walking a while, mud and dirt all in her fur. At their approach, she’d frozen up, head down and looking frightened. Understandably so, as the sky was starting to turn dark.

“Are you lost, little one? Where is your herd?” Sif asked ever so gentle as she approached, head down as she looked around in concern.

The little filly didn’t answer at first, not seeming to know what to say, but eventually nodded. “Yes… We got separated… I was trying to follow my mom, but…”

“It’s okay. We can help you find her.” Ragnar said gently, careful with his demeanor. “Do you know where they went?”

“I found some of their tracks. I think?” The filly answered. “But I don’t know. I was trying to follow them, but they aren’t as good here as they were back there.”

“Show me.” The stallion insisted, gently nuzzling her to take him to where she found the better tracks.

The foal they’d found nodded and went to show them the tracks she’d been following. They weren’t too old. A good sign. He wasn’t sure that they could find them before night fall however. At least she seemed to know what direction they went and they had some sort of trace to follow. He found other little signs of a herd about. So, he started to lead the way. At least they could probably somewhat catch up before nightfall.

As they walked, conversation picked up all thinks to Eir. The excitable little filly was quick to want to learn more about this other foal. So far they’d only really learnt her name. Selena. Eir found this name really pretty and made sure that she knew that. Eventually Selena grew comfortable enough to start playing Eir, some sort of game of tag or the like. At least that’s what it appeared. The two foals chased each other around, one with a leaf in their mouth. The goal seemed to be to use the leaf to touch the other and when that happened then it was the others turn to do the same. Ragnar only kinda understood how this made sense. They seemed happy though and the mood growing lighter.

The moon eventually rose in the sky however and Ragnar was trying to keep the two close. Their game had changed and evolved and they were growing confidant enough to go even farther out. It was enough that the Stallion started to worry a bit. It wouldn’t be the easiest to get to them if something happened and with how dark it was getting, he knew that could mean that there dangers were roaming about. The noise they created didn’t help.

And right he was about that, as Eir laughed and darted even farther ahead, putting distance between herself and Selena, a wolf shot out of the under growth, biting Eir’s wither. The little filly cried out in pain and fear, eyes wide.

Ragnarok was horrified, letting out a cry of rage as he sprinted faster than he’d ever had before, throwing himself at the wolf teeth first. He didn’t hesitate to make sure he did damage. No one attacked his herd, let alone his foals like that. Those that did would pay.

Sif was standing over Eir while keeping Selena behind her in an instant. As the fight moved around them, she turned, keeping her hind to the wolf, ready to kick in an instant if need be and she did a couple time.

The wolf was in very rough shape by the time that Ragnarok had managed to scare it off, luckily just a single one on it’s own. He didn’t let his guard down, just in case. He knew that an injured foal could easily bring in more dangers.

“let’s find shelter.” He insisted nearly immediately. “Eir, come on, let’s move. Selena, we’ll keep searching in the morning.”

“Okay.” The shaken filly said quietly, looking wide eyed as she stood close to Sif and Eir.

It was a bit of a travel while Eir was injured, the foal’s ears back the whole time. Eventually they came to a nice clearly where she laid down. Selena laid next to her, watching worriedly.

Sif disappeared momentarily, off to find something to help with the wound.

Ragnar sighed softly, feeling bad for the foal. “This is another good lesson. This time, this is why we don’t stray far from the herd. We’re safer closer together. They pick those they feel they can get easiest. Young away from the rest is an easy target.” The stallion said, laying down next to her.

The normally happy and energetic filly didn’t say anything however, frowning deeply as she curled up tighter. She didn’t say anything as she didn’t know how to reply. It was a very upsetting day.

Ragnar laid his head next to her, curling around her the best he could while making sure he could get up in an instant if he needed.

Sif returned, carefully putting the herbs she found on the wounds. “Here. I’m not as good as you at this, but it should help.”

“Thank you.” Came a very quiet reply.

Sif laid down, near to Ragnar, watching the two foals for a while, and staying up while waiting for everyone else to sleep. When she thought that that was the case, she rested her head on Ragnar’s back and heaved a little sigh. The stallion looked back at her, a little shocked, but gave her a gentle look. He felt comfortable with the little family he’d built around. It was enough so that he slowly drifted off into sleep.

In the morning, it was a simple enough day. Finding food and water first before continuing to find Selena’s herd. It was a more quiet time, Eir pressed against Sif’s side nearly the entire time. It didn’t take too long before they found where the herd had been resting. Selena and Eir gave a goodby to one another before they watched as the lost filly reunited with her herd. Ragnar was glad that she found where she belonged. Now, to tend to his own.
