Description You don't know how many times I've seen this come up when the Xbox 360 is mentioned. BTW, it hasn't happened to me yet. And every time I say that and I've done it just now...I knock several times on my hard wood floors for luck. I think next I'll be hammering a horseshoe above it just in case.

Little info on my Xbox. I've got the Xbox and hard drive, not the Elite. I've had my little 360 for about 2 years now. I've had my original Xbox for longer and it has never died on me.

Red Ring of Death appears to be mostly an overheating issue, so, I've done some preventative actions to make sure I can keep that little console running for another 2 years.

1. I've elevated it. It stands on my 'green monster' cabinet elevated over the surface.

2. It's the only dust free thing on that surface.

3. I've kept its vents clean and clear.

4. It's in the coolest room in my apartment--the only area where the TV and A/C are.

5. I don't leave it on for extended times.

6. I don't use it that often. Anyone with XBOX Live and me as a friend can vouch for that.

7. I keep knocking on my hardwood floors and bowing to the Xbox to appease it to make sure it doesn't do that.

Now, it did freeze up twice during a game and that was with Fable downloaded from Xbox Live. I'm thinking that it doesn't like Fable, and pretty much I don't like it either. It hasn't done that with any other downloaded game or any other game I've played with on it.

Pray the luck continues, folks.

Nothing against Microsoft, but again, if you mention Vista to my aunt, she'll turn into a dragon and devour you. Bill Gates royally screwed up.

If not for the ring, Microsoft could have won the console wars.

RROD is the main reason why I'm never buying an XBox console. I'm proud of my "kiddie console" Nintendo Wii, because it doesn't suffer hardware failure a month into use (like the XBox 360) or screw itself up with a buggy clock for the sake of "fighting software piracy" (like what happened with some PS3's earlier this year [link] ). "Serious" gamers can laugh all they want at the Nintendo Wii, but I think it's fair to say Nintendo won this generation's console war simply by not royally screwing up their console.

I can see many people have commented, so I'm not sure if you've heard this yet, but Microsoft has a lifetime warranty on the RRoD. And its cause BTW is the overheating loosens inner soldering done on circuitry, so it just basically dies.

It's worse when you don't get the red ring of death, because then you have a problem that no one knows anything about. I went through three 360's because they started to not read the discs, I didn't get any error message or anything, I'd just put in a disc, it'd start reading it, then it would say I could eject, it was like it forgot there was even a disc in it. Grrr...

Son, you could've saved a hell of a lot of money. That was happening to me, and it was a $107 dollar repair, though you bought two more Xboxes.

Specter-Von-Baren In reply to c0r8377 [2010-03-19 02:35:35 +0000 UTC]

I didn't buy any new ones. They broke so fast that I was able to exchange them for new ones.

God told me I was playing too much XBox and sent a power surge that most likely killed the power supply for eternity. Or something else important in my 360.

wait what the... NO I DIDN'T SAVE!
next thing you know your so that you have to wait about a month to get a refurbished one, but if you didn't fill out the "add the extended warranty" paper, like me, i probably wouldn't of had to pay $100 to get a refurbished xbox. bastards and their fine print. i want kill the idiot who thought it was a good idea to do fine print

I remember how we got our live cards.

Whenever the xbox got the red rings of death, we usually though we could just send the xBox to get fixed by microsoft. They send back a new xbox with a free one month xbox live card and we are happy campers.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

FrostyMcTimbers In reply to HyperactivePop [2009-08-30 07:05:15 +0000 UTC]

its not new its a refurbished one that was sent in way back all they do is replace the parts with new one to reduce their loss in profits. they also replace the face plate so it looks new, ands since it has a different serial number you think it new but if you think about this more you'll realize they would lose a lot of their profits if they bought new raw material to make oh lets say 20,000 xbox 360s. now after they make their profits they need to pay the company they get their raw material from then they need to pay the employees with the other part of that profit, now whats easier replacing a few parts or building it from scratch. you catch my drift. you gotta make business sense out of it my friend.

What they should have done is made it, so that it would shut itself down if it started to get overheated. I think I'd rather lose a bit of playing time than pay 400 bucks again.

peffy [2009-08-13 00:36:28 +0000 UTC]

sweet. . . i just saved myself over 300 bucks for that.
i was planning to get one by the end of the year with my very own money but i won't now. This "Red Ring of Death"
thing has got me on my nerves and for that, I'm won't buy the 360.

I'll use the money for something else but I don't know what.

I'll just stick with the Wii then.

its not that i hate the 360, its just that I keep hearing that there are problems with it.

Ghostwalker2061 In reply to peffy [2009-08-13 03:57:24 +0000 UTC]

Dude, get an Xbox 360 if you want one. Just take care of it. I made this as a joke pretty much.

But I didn't mean to turn people away from the Xbox. It's a good game console. Mine's been lasting for 2 years and with the right care, I will make it last for another two or even longer. You just have to take extra precautions to make sure that it works right. Most of the people from what I've noticed getting these Red Rings, they stand it up on end, they put them in cabinets where there isn't any air circulation, they don't keep them in cool places, they play them pretty much until the machines break anyways...all around, they don't take good care of them.

Now, some of the Red Rings have to do with well...it's a machine and sometimes, you get a lemon. But a lot of these Red Rings is caused by user idiocy not the game console. And the joke pertains to well, first gen Elites owners.

Oh, and the Wii has its own Red Ring of Death, BTW. So does the PS3.

i turned away from the 360 since last year and for a few reasons. Plus i wouldn't buy something that i won't use to often.

My friend has a 360 and takes care it really well. . . i'll enjoy the 360 moments there.

I take care of my Wii. . . though i hardly play it now because of college work

lol! that is so true!! he made the xbox 360 shitty when it first came out on purpose so that you spent more money just on repairing it alone!
luckily mine as not had the red ring of death yet.

SpiffyMai [2009-08-12 19:46:33 +0000 UTC]

I *HAVE* Had it. Luckily it was early on and my shit was still under warranty so I got a free replacement.

They did tell me it was an overheating issue and that you shouldn't leave your 360 on for more than 24 hours at a time. So if your one of those hardcore RPG fans who can sit and play a game for two days straight w/o moving..... I dont recommend it.

I jump my brothers shit everytime he walks away from it w/o turning it off.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Ghostwalker2061 In reply to SpiffyMai [2009-08-12 22:12:28 +0000 UTC]

I don't recommend playing for two days straight either. That's hard enough on the Xbox. The longest straight run I've ever done was 10 hours in Halo 3 with a bunch of friends and that was because we kept getting stuck on the Cortana level. So many deaths that day. Thank God for check points.

I'll probably spend like 2 hours on it once a week or 2 or three one particular week because I'd watch movies on it. But when that thing's running, I keep everything I can away from it.

All in all, I like the Xbox 360. I've had my Elite for 3 years and it only did the E74 Error message in that time a few months ago. I do have to give Microsoft credit, they sure now how to make memorable error messages. Nice work.

I saw other poeple get this (I don't have a 360. A friend a cross the street given me has xbox.) I am worry if i do get a 360 that well happen.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Ghostwalker2061 In reply to purpleshadowbooster [2009-08-12 18:23:18 +0000 UTC]

Well, I have given good preventative measures to keep that from happening.

It has to do with overheating and from what I've heard, it happens to people who don't take care of their Xboxes and keep crap around the vents or put it in a place that's not well cooled or ventilated.

I've owned mine for 2 years and no red ring.

Oh, and if you do get an Xbox, don't ever stand it on end. That will surely give you the red ring quickly and it'll scratch your disks.

purpleshadowbooster In reply to Ghostwalker2061 [2009-08-12 18:53:12 +0000 UTC]

Ok. Thanks for the tip. I try not to overheat so i don't play long hours on it.

I hope to get a 360 become i well to play Halo 3.
