Description You don't know how many times I've seen this come up when the Xbox 360 is mentioned. BTW, it hasn't happened to me yet. And every time I say that and I've done it just now...I knock several times on my hard wood floors for luck. I think next I'll be hammering a horseshoe above it just in case.

Little info on my Xbox. I've got the Xbox and hard drive, not the Elite. I've had my little 360 for about 2 years now. I've had my original Xbox for longer and it has never died on me.

Red Ring of Death appears to be mostly an overheating issue, so, I've done some preventative actions to make sure I can keep that little console running for another 2 years.

1. I've elevated it. It stands on my 'green monster' cabinet elevated over the surface.

2. It's the only dust free thing on that surface.

3. I've kept its vents clean and clear.

4. It's in the coolest room in my apartment--the only area where the TV and A/C are.

5. I don't leave it on for extended times.

6. I don't use it that often. Anyone with XBOX Live and me as a friend can vouch for that.

7. I keep knocking on my hardwood floors and bowing to the Xbox to appease it to make sure it doesn't do that.

Now, it did freeze up twice during a game and that was with Fable downloaded from Xbox Live. I'm thinking that it doesn't like Fable, and pretty much I don't like it either. It hasn't done that with any other downloaded game or any other game I've played with on it.

Pray the luck continues, folks.

Nothing against Microsoft, but again, if you mention Vista to my aunt, she'll turn into a dragon and devour you. Bill Gates royally screwed up.

This is how you should take care of your Xbox 360.

Don't stand it up vertical. Lay it flat with the vents up.

Keep everything including dust away from the side vents.

Don't leave it on for extended periods of time. Or if you plan to play a game for a long time, afterwards, turn the Xbox off and let it rest in a cool spot.

Always keep it in a cool spot even when you are playing.

Don't keep it in a cabinet.

If you do have a cabinet that you keep it in, when you play it, pull it out and place it on the floor.

Don't place it on the carpet. If this cannot be help, put it on top of a hardback book before you turn it on. The elevation will allow the Xbox to breathe and stay cool.

The power supply should be plugged into a serge protector.

If you don't have a serge protector, then unplug the Xbox during storms.

Always keep your Xbox free of dust by wiping it down with a moist towelette. (My Xbox is the cleanest thing on my cabinet, and it sits on top of the cabinet, not inside.)

Make sure you don't pile anything on top of the Xbox 360 that would either heat up or cover the vents. (I do keep my wireless modem on top, but it's a small little thing and the Xbox hardly notices it.)

Make sure your power supply is also well ventilated.

And if you do eventually get the RRoD, DO NOT COVER THE XBOX WITH A TOWEL! That doesn't work.

And since you have a cat, you'll need to keep the Xbox free of cat hairs. Just make sure it's elevated, dust free and in a cool spot.

Do this, and you're Xbox will have a long and happy life.

Overheating. What I said in the artists comments. And I've given ways to prevent it from happening especially for those who own Xboxes that are passed the warranty.

My recent one didn't get that. Just one red light in the lower corner.

Either way, though, I can't seem to have them last longer than a year.

Well, if it's under warranty...talk to Microsoft. Mine isn't, so I'm taking extra measures to make sure it doesn't do it.

I filed the claim a few days before the warranty expired, as that's when it happened.

Knowing about how warranties work, mostly because I used to work for a company that handled them, a lot of times, it doesn't count. Why? Because the company is a douche and won't live up to their standards.

But who knows, Microsoft might do something nice.

Its funny because I've done the same precautions with my 360 and it hasn't died yet either. People think I'm just a dumbass when I say that its more prone the the RRoD when it is vertical, but then they believe me when I prove it with my brother's 360 story.

Also, nothing against you or anything, but I do hate it when people blame Microsoft's faults on him. He is barely involved anymore- he's just the chairman now. He had nothing to do with the engineering of the Xbox or the Xbox 360. I can't say the same about Vista as I haven't done my homework about it, but I'm just saying. Cut the guy some slack.

Ghostwalker2061 In reply to DarkTiger93 [2009-08-12 18:28:54 +0000 UTC]

What, I can't be funny? It wouldn't have been as funny if I had put anything else in there.

And mine isn't vertical, it's horizontal. It was vertical once, but then, I heard that having it vertical scratches the disks. And yes, that's what causes it, not anything else. So, I started putting it horizontal since then. I only prop it vertical when it's off so I can clean around the area to keep the dust away.

DarkTiger93 In reply to Ghostwalker2061 [2009-08-13 14:34:05 +0000 UTC]

Oh, I know. I was just voicing my opinion

I thought so. Yeah, the scratching began on my brothers and low and behold- he gets the RRoD within months.

I actually never got the 3 Rings of Death...but my old 360's DVD and GPU failed.

FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF UUUUUUUUUUUU-

Thankfully Best Buy was awesome and refunded me for a replacement. Hooray for Elite RE5 Edition!

Mine is over 2 years old so, I probably won't be getting a refund if it happens. So, I'm taking preventive measures to insure that it doesn't.

The only problem I'm having right now is my main account had been hacked aboud 2 and a half weeks ago with my mum credit card on and I freaked out but I managed to get myzccount frozen get my email AND gamer tag back I just need to wait for microsfot to solve this 'case' they have going on involving the hacking =/ slow ppl ><

Well, try having to buy yourself a new Xbox. That's why I'm taking so good care of mine.

Guess, I'm a bit cynical towards kids who's parents buy them stuff because anything over 50 bucks back when I was a kid, I had to purchase myself. And I did. That's what layaway was for back then.

if that was an option in times likes this then i might BUT having £80 for one full year isnt very helpful =/ and i mean its not really my fault for my parents being that way (not that im saying your blaming me for having my parents buy me stuff) besides for some reason my xbox hasnt crashed a new game in a while =/ i dunno maybe it was just those games or something

Getting a paper route might help. I had one. Mow the lawn and earn money. Wash your neighbor's cars to earn money. Lots of things kids can do. I washed my grandma's three cars, helped her clean out her house when I was a kid and she paid me by the hour.

Oh dear i plan to get a 360 at the end of this year. i keep hearing about this ring of redness. and i do not wish to see it. so i plan to play it only in winter because it gets so cold here in ohio there is no way that system could over heat. I hope your luck continues with your xbox's and i hope and pray to god mines doesn't do that red ring thing.

Also, when you finally get one, DO NOT prop it vertical. I know it looks cool, but that's a sure-fire way of getting the Red Ring of Death (RRoD).

Ghostwalker2061 In reply to exuitirteiss [2009-08-12 22:46:35 +0000 UTC]

Also, propping it vertical like that will scratch the disks. You've heard the tales that the XBox 360 has a habit of scratching disks, well, that's why. Those dumb fucks prop it up on its side and so the disk scratches inside the machine.

Don't do that with your Xbox. As I told the other guy, take good care of your Xbox, and it'll have a long and happy life and you can enjoy playing many games with it.

Never owned an XBox, but this subject keeps coming up everywhere. Coming from a company which is known for the blue screen of death I guess they went with red rings for a change. XP

As for Vista, it seems like a tradition of Microsoft to release a Decent/Good OS on every other release... Windows 7 sounds promising from an uncle that works for the company. When I got Vista the first thing I did was figure out how to get rid of that ABYSMAL User Account Control security feature. That alone got me a bunch of followers!

I love my Xbox because well, I'm a big Halo fan. I love first person shooters and Halo is my thing. And yeah, I've had the screen freeze and the disk error like twice since I've owned it, but again, so far, I've taken care of my console, so it runs happily.

Which is why the other motivational poster was made. I love those four green lights.

My first Xbox still runs happily too and I've owned it since 2002.

Well it certainly sounds like you treat your stuff well, it does make quite a difference! I was able to trade in an old slightly broken DS at a GameStop because, aside from an off touch screen, it looked and felt brand new.

...yes I kinda cheated them on that, but I have good reason to! They lied to me a few times to get a couple sales and they claim to be "game experts". Since when does testing a DS without using the screen sound like something a gaming expert would do? They were asking for it! XD

I care about my electronics. I've had a laptop that was supposed to basically go out in about 3 years...you know the usual lifespan of a laptop. I managed to get it to last for 8 years. My first laptop was a black and white one running horrid Window 3.11. It lasted over 10 years before it broke, and that was because someone stepped on the screen.

Now I own two more laptops, both are a year old, and I'm going to do the same thing, extend their life. Electronics are my thing.

We’ve managed to get long lives out of our eletronics.

Our 1984 Magnum PC2 lasted until 2004 before the hard drive failed and we got a new computer. So yes I have MS DOS experience.

To continue the 80’s theme we have a Sanyo Beta cord tape recorder and a Toshiba Camcorder/VHS that both still work.

I also have a first gen PS One.
