thanks! I'm so very glad you like it.

nah, there's really nothing special about it, the main thing is practice, practice, practice.

painted with a MOUSE???

fuck man you are INSANE.
that background is simply stunning D:
and well, if I'd have to start talking about that one man in the front I wouldn't be able to stop so I better keep my mouth shut ^^ hehe
GREAT work. just great.
keep it up!

wow, thanks again! I'm really glad.

he, aren't we all a bit insane? we are the fans, after all. by the way, painting with a mouse is quite easy, if you do it in Photoshop. the only problem is that it's VERY SLOW. when I finally got myself a graphic tablet, I started painting like two times faster. such a relief.

yep, I'm especially glad you like the background. I had to completely re-paint the damn sky for two times at least. I fail at painting clouds.

no problem, buddy you deserve all the compliments!

heh, yep, what wouldn't we do for Metallica?
I've never tried it actually (and I don't think I ever will, I'll keep my tablet *3* )...
OH GOD paint it TWO times??
how much did you work on this one??
I seriously wish I had your patience.

Gildhartt In reply to BFlowing [2010-02-17 16:32:36 +0000 UTC]

thanks.
no, never paint with a mouse, when you have a tablet, unless you want to punish yourself really hard.

how long did I work? well, about a month, but with LARGE breaks (for 5-6 days or more). I guess, the total work time would be about a week + 2-3 days.

yep, total repainting happens rather often. because it's perfectly normal for me, when I have the whole character ready, but have absolutely NO IDEA about the background. that's what I hate backgrounds for.

nah, don't be mistaken, I really am disgracefully lazy. I've been kicking myself to start this pic for three months, no less.

hehe, the mouse - a masochist's best friend xD

jeez that's a long time. I remember working on my "Minus Human" pic (the one I worked on longest to this day ) for about....2-3 months with weeks-long breaks, even if it didn't take me long to start it I am painfully slow when it comes to finish something, and I procrastinate a lot too Dx
HAH. Backgrounds. If they didn't exist, I would be happy.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Gildhartt In reply to BFlowing [2010-02-17 22:57:32 +0000 UTC]

exactly. I recall the year of painting with a mouse (that's how long it took me to get a tablet) as a bit of a nightmare. love my tablet, although it's neither wacom, nor genius.

well, 2-3 months with breaks is a normal time span for a big picture, I think. your "Minus Human" is definitely worth the time spent on it.

oh yes, goddamn procrastination. there are those days, when you open photoshop or take a pencil and put it all back almost immediately, because there is absolutely no mood for drawing whatsoever. I hate there days, quite depressing.
what is even worse, is that when you have the complete idea of a pic ready in your head, but you can't start drawing it for months. this is the problem I have at this very moment, btw.

yeah, backgrounds are real pain in the ass most of the time. but they do create the mood, so they are worth it.

by the way, I got very interested, did you study art somewhere or are you self-taught?

BFlowing In reply to Gildhartt [2010-02-18 11:44:53 +0000 UTC]

at least now your poor hand can rest a bit my tablet is a Trust...actually, WAS. It broke down recently, and so did my computer. I brought my pc to fix but my tablet can't be saved! It's a good excuse to buy a Wacom though! So until my computer comes back from fixing I'm stuck with traditional art and my usual sketches....I miss digital so much
and thank you!
ah, I know those days so well.....I pick up my sketchbook and pencil, and I stare at the blank page for about 10 minutes before putting everything back and slouching on the couch xD There is no way to get me drawing if I don't feel like it. Ah, and I know that other feeling too! Sometimes I have the PERFECT idea in my mind but I don't seem able to put the pencil on the paper. With Minus Human it was fantastic, the concept sketch came down so smoothly. By the way, you tell me it takes you ages to start drawing but then you have tons and tons of pics in your gallery...how is that? do you ever work on two big pics at the same time?
really? what concept do you have in mind?

yesss I know and I hate myself profoundly for NEVER being able to finish a big pic. I managed to finish minus human because most of the background was covered up by the big long-haired guy and it was simply a sun with some clouds and lightning You got me inspired to start a big pic now. As soon as I get my computer back Ill start!

ah, no, no art-school for me I'm completely self-taught. At times I buy art books and take a look at them but I barely use them anyway, and a couple of years ago I took watercolor and oil painting lessons from a family friend, but I quitted since it was getting annoying, even though I keep loving both watercolor and oil very much ( but I never can get my ass on it.....damn procrastination again )
now it's your turn! I got interested too any art-schools? and by the way, I noticed your english is perfect...are you half english or did you learn it somewhere?

P.S. we're clogging DA with comments here xD do you have Facebook? we could talk on there

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Gildhartt In reply to BFlowing [2010-02-18 18:23:21 +0000 UTC]

I feel sorry for your tablet... how did such a global breakdown happen?? btw, such a strange coincidence! my tablet is also Trust. O_o

yep, hate creative crises. in the worst cases they make you feel worthless and unable to create anything at all.

well, i have about 40 pics, and that isn't tons, to my mind... I'm convinced that real tons should start from about 80 and more. by the way, the stuff on the first pages is up to 3-4 years old, so this "ton" is really a digest of the last few years.
and yes, it does take me ages to start and finish in case of really big pics I can get distractd by positively anything. not to mention that my real creative bursts usually happen exactly at the time when I need to study hard or smth like that.
wow, I'm so glad that I've inspired you for a big pic. really hope it turns out great. good health to your computer.

you're self taught? wow, that's truly impressive! in that case you're really talented and it's me who should envy.

well, as for me, I've had about 10 years at an art-studio. I started at the age of three, and I was EXTREMELY lucky to have an absolutely marvelous teacher. he had an unusual and very effective method of teaching, so I stayed at his studio for as long as I could. I had to leave the studio at about 14, because I went to a quite high-level school, which used to eat up most of my time and brain *but it was worth it, thankfully* and yes, I forgot to mention: at this art-studio I studied mostly painting in gouache, but I also did some serious graphite works in the last couple of years.
*I talk too much about myself *

wow, didn't expect to hear this about my english! glad you think so. yours is very well too. If I didn't know you were from Italy, I never would have suspected a thong.
nope, I'm a pure 100% Russian, I just was lucky to have some good teachers and to start learning quite early.

yeah, the comments are multiplyng and growing menacingly big. but no, I don't have a facebook, unfortunately. only good ol' ICQ.

I seriously have no idea, it seems like everything electronic in my room rebelled against me all at once
my tablet worked quite well but apart from being broken I can't find the installation CD with the driver D: my luck ran out.

haha yep, in these days I just feel useless and stay in bed all day feeling depressed

well it's 40 pics but they're all full pics and most of them are very detailed! If you peer in my gallery you might find one or two full pics at the most xD
ah, I know that so well. The creative peak of student artists comes either at 3 am in the morning or when there is an exam coming up. Our brain hates us, I think
hehe thank you even if before I found out about DA I was utter SHIT at drawing. My skills were "hidden" I guess, and DA released my potential by making myself confront with the reality of all the awesome artists out there. Instead, I see that you posted works from before you joined DA, and they are amazing O: HOW did you do that? that art studio sounds wonderful! The only art-related teaching I've taken in all these years is the normal art class in school, and most of the time I didn't learn anything. DA is my real teacher ^^ yes, you were really lucky. I wish we had things like that over here It's wonderful that you could learn the basics of painting from someone. I guess this is why I rarely paint

Seriously, your english is very......english (hope you got the compliment xD ) while mine is maybe a tad more american, but that's 'cause I'm helplessly in love with american culture and the country itself not to speak of the accents, I love the accents from all the different states, especially California (guess why )
even though I learned my english in Ireland ( I lived there for 6 years when I was younger ), so I have a thing for Ireland too
wow so you learned english exclusively in school? You must have had some awesome teachers. If I didn't move to Ireland, my english would probably be complete cow shit. I keep my english trained through DA, and also because my school is an international european school, so there are many nationalities going around here. But the last 5 years I've had an english teacher which I didn't like AT ALL. This year I was lucky enough to change and get a new teacher which is complete AWESOME (and comes from Ireland )

ah, damn. Facebook is the only thing I use, unfortunately. And I don't think ICQ even exists over here, or maybe it has a different name you should make a facebook account, it's really useful for connecting with people around the world

Gildhartt In reply to BFlowing [2010-02-19 22:06:39 +0000 UTC]

aww, such electronic shit does happen. by the way, I think that drivers for trust can be found on the internet on Trust's website. www.trust.com , I believe. at least, when I was istalling mine from the cd, I've been offered an option of either installing the version on the cd, or downloading the latest version from the website.

aw yes, all this sitting on a pic 'till 3 am and then having to get up for the first lecture, which is at 9.30am... hate it, but can't help it. this is fate, i believe.
yes, I know what you mean, DA definitely inspires to draw more and get better all the time. when I've just joined DA, I submitted about 22 pics or so, which was the result of the last four years (not much, huh?). and in the last TWO MONTHS, that I've spent on DA, I'fe finished just the same number of pics, and I draw practically every week, while earlier I could easily have half-a-year or even longer breaks.

you don't have any decent art studios there? why, that's a pity! and strange too. 'cause here in Russia we happen to have a stereotype, that Italy is the real country of art, especially painting, sculpture and classical music. *that's because of the renaissance art, I believe*
well, anyway, it's great that you've learnt to draw practically without any help. it's much easier, when someone experinced advices you and points out you mistakes time after time.

why thank you! my written english is more english, because, i guess, i was taught the classical version of the language. but my spoken english often has an american accent too, partly because of you-know-who, and partly because I watch to much american movies. by the way, watching movies and cartoons in english without any translation is VERY useful for learning the language, in all aspects. it hepled me a lot.
I think I have to mention, that most of the credits for my english should go to my mum, because it was her who started to teach me very early. school teachers didn't play the major part, although some of them were helpful.

and yes, it's so very interesting to hear, that you lived it Ireland for a few years! must have been very interesting for you. I simply can't imagine myself living in a foreign country for a long time...

that's strange... I was sure, that ICQ exists anywhere, where there's internet. all you have to do is download the installator from their official site... if it works even in Russia, why shouldn't it work in a civilized european country?
but anyway, I think it would be useful to register at Facebook. in Russia we have an almost exact russian clone of the facebook, called Vkontakte, so I guess, facebook will be quite habitual for me.

ah yes I heard that somewhere, but still I have to wait for my computer to come back before I can try anything

wow 6 months -break? I wonder how you kept your talent going. I have to do constant practice if I want to keep my style the same 0.0 and 22 pics in a month IS a ton, now you've got no excuses
actually, there are many artistic academies here, and Italy really is the country of art, but I've never seen "art studios" like the one you told me about. The academies are like universities, but before that I don't think there are many chances for a student to learn art except in school.

I'd love to hear how you speak! hehe well you-know-who probably played an important part in every fan's language xD I also often watch things in english, also because the things that italian TV dishes out are TOTAL SHIT and make me ashamed of my country. I watch lots of tv shows and movies in english, also because I think the original language is almost always the best one. And I wish I started learning english very early...in that way I could've avoided the first year in ireland in a school where I understood nobody and nobody understood me. That was the worst year of my life but it was useful anyway.
yes, Ireland is a beautiful, beautiful place! The landscapes are so suggestive...I miss it a lot sometimes. Italy too has wonderful landscapes but they're very different from the irish ones. Even though, I was happy to move back to Italy since I never really made good friends over there....but when I came back here I ended up in a wonderful class and now I have the awesomest friends I could wish for so you never moved anywhere? I moved two times, from Rome to Dublin when I was 6 years old and from Dublin to Varese (a small town in the north, near Milan ) when I was 11.

hehe maybe it's only me that's never heard of it. I think that over here we call it MSN (or maybe that's just different). hehe, when I get my computer back, maybe I'll install it. Bu the way, when you make a facebook account just search for "Bene Hetfield Fiore" that's my username on there, and I'm sure I'm the only one so there's no chance of being mistaken xD

Gildhartt In reply to BFlowing [2010-02-20 22:40:48 +0000 UTC]

good health to your computer then!

well, I've actually no idea, how I managed to stay on the approximately same level after huge breaks... I guess, I have to thank my art-studio teacher for that. he must have given me very solid basics, which are hard to forget.
actually, that's 22 pics in TWO months. am I excused?

hm, that's really strange to hear about art education in Italy. it means that you either get a full classical art-edication, or you get no art-education at all (unless you're a determined and successful self-taught). this gives no oportunity for the ordinaty people to get some help in learning the basics, when thay want to... why's that, I wonder. in St-Petersburg there are art-schools (for different forms of art at the same time, like music AND painting, for example) for children and youngsters, which you can attend and leave at will, in almost every district of the city... as far as I know, same goes for Moscow. the levels of these schools are quite different, but at least you have an opportunity to make a good choice.

your english is very good, to my mind, I suppose you also speak fluently. I have certain difficulties at speaking: I'm good al listening and understanding, but I speak quite slowly myself. *thank god I at leasr have no terrible russian accent * no real speaking practice, apparently.

I totally agree about the original language in films: the translation completely ruins the film, especially when you know, how tha actors' voices really sound.
by the way, since we've started talking about films, do you have any favourite ones?

and yes, russian tv is also a complete shit, I simply don't understand, how people manage to watch it and why the hell do they do it. it's totally brain-exploding. ugh! that's why films, films and once again films on dvd. or cartoons from time to time. *but no anime!*

wow... going to school in a foreign country without knowing the language? this is an enormous stress! not sure that I would have survived that. great respect for you!
no, I've never moved anywhere (only to the centre of SpB from the suburb), but my parents lived in Moscow for two years, so I went to visit tham every holidays. that's why now a trip to Moscow (600km!) is a totally ordinary thing for me. I'm not sure that I'd enjoy much living somewhere else. I love St-Petersburg too much.

that's great to hear, that you've managed to find great friends. I have quite few friens, because I'm so DAMN unsociable. sometimes I'm fine with that, but sometimes it depresses me like hell. got to work on myself.

yes, I guess, I'll get myself a facebook accout in the next few days, and I'll definitely look for you there. DA is not the best place for big conversations.
and by the way, ICQ should be available practically everywhere, it's quite comfortable and useful. and no, I guess MSN is not the same as ICQ. ICQ is called the same everywhere, it's a trademark, after all.

BFlowing In reply to Gildhartt [2010-03-03 20:55:25 +0000 UTC]

I wish I had learned my basics somewhere! I had to do all by myself...maybe if I had gotten some basics I would be a lot better now
NO YOU ARE NOT EXCUSED you still dish out too many pics xD

well, I'm sure that something like art-studios exist somewhere here, but they aren't common and personally I don't know anyone who frequents one
there are some high-schools which concentrate on art, but I don't know what happens in there (anyway, I don't think drawing is given much importance anyway).
You Russians have the solution for everything! xD

well, hehe, actually speaking is what I prefer doing. Yes, writing gives me more time to think about words and syntax, but speaking to me is what shows if you really know the language I love to speak in english, and I do it whenever I can. LOL people tell me I have an american accent! xD guess who's fault it is xD I used to have an Irish accent because I lived there, but I gradually lost it and replaced it with american (which I LOVE ).
hehe I guess russian accent is really strong! And the only cure for speaking slowly is PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE do you get to speak english often?

yep, I was saved by the fact that we have SKY which has the option, for some programs, to switch to the original language. So for example I can watch movies or documentaries in english. But I never tough the italian channels, and never will. I actually like anime, but I don't watch them often. I think Hayao Miazaki's cartoons are wonderful!

ah, yeah...it was a tough year, but only the first one! After that, I started learning english. What I did was stay a year silent in the corner of the class, not talking to anyone and listening a lot, and then a year later I basically burst out and started talking quite fluent english XD
I'm sure you love your city, it looks very beautiful! Even if I live in a small town in the north, I was born in the centre, in Rome, the city of magic, and I feel that I still belong there. I'm not sure I'd like to go back to live there but I feel that it's my city, I feel at home when I'm there By the way, do you live with your parents or in some student-house or apartment?

yes, I was really lucky. I'm unsociable too at the start, but in the end I manage to open up but, you do have friends do you? that's the important thing, even if you have only one. I myself prefer to have few friends, but which are good and trustworthy ...and staying alone sometimes helps a lot, I am starting to be more and more aware of that in this period.

Gildhartt In reply to BFlowing [2010-03-04 21:03:22 +0000 UTC]

you're still a VERY successful self-taught though.
oh no, I have no excuse, what should I do... I guess I'll draw some more to get out of depression.

no, the one thing we never have a solution for is WHY THE HELL is Russia always in a deep asshole.

oh yes, english with heavy russian accent sounds really scary. I've heard a LOT of it, when I was in junior classes at school. nightmarish. oh yes, I totally agree about PRACTICE at speaking, but I hardly have any these days. your school is international, which gives a perfect opportunity for practice, but my faculty and the whole university is not. alas.

oh yes, I wish our mentally retarded TV was less retarded and had such a great option. I was in Finland this winter, I got an opportunity to watch their TV a bit. so, MORE THAN A HALF of their channels had programs/films in english with just subtitles or even without any. and finns are our nearest european neighbours. I guess civilization just ends right at out border.

ah yees, Miadzaki! of all his works I've watched only Totoro, but it was sooo adorable and kind. ^^ and the quality of animation was excellent, which is quite rare in anime. speaking of anime, I also liked Death Note (it has a very sensible plot!, non-typical for anime ) and Hellsing. and I hate Naruto. such a soap-opera, ugh.

WOW, start speaking fluent english after a year of learning?? that's very impressive! you must have mighty linguistic abilities then.

I really should visit Rome someday. and travel through Europe. it's no good sitting in Russia year after year.

I live with my parents right now and I don't think I'll be moving anywhere in the next couple of years. we gat along perfectly well.

hm. I would say that, on the contrary, you create an impression of a very sociable and cheerful person, even according to your comments...
well, I have one VERY good friend, but we don't see each other often these days, 'cause we're at different faculties and have quite different lifestyles. and I also have a bunch of people who I have very good contact with, but I can't call them actual friends. but at least that's way better than what I had 2-3 years ago. I was completely inadequate and asocial. that's even scary to recall.
faculty of psychology has made a normal adequate person out of me.

Thank you!
YESDRAWDRAWDRAWDRAWDRAW until you drop, it helps! *and I get to see more art*
haha, I'd love to hear russian-english! Also italian english sounds VERY weird. Because of our language, we tend to pronounce the literal sounds of letters, and also it's weird when it comes to pronouncing that sort of soft "u" you find everywhere. Like in the word "fun", we would pronounce it "fan" xD we just don't have that sound here hm, it's a pity you don't get to practice. But don't you have any english speaking friends? You could practice with them

oh, so fortunately TV isn't total shit everywhere! I'm glad to hear that. By the way, how was Finland? I'd love to visit it AH by the way, before I forget: I suggested to my mom we could spend part of our summer vacations visiting St.Petersburg! she had also wanted to visit it for quite a long time, so she was glad of my idea! We still, haven't decided, but I hope my suggestion will be accepted! Would you be in the city in, say, August? Just think of how wonderful it would be to meet up!

AWWW I've been wanting to watch Totoro for ages, but I never got around to it. You should watch "Howl's moving castle"...it's a masterpiece!! I loved Death Note, but I stopped watching the anime since they were sending it too late at night and I didn't have time to watch it on youtube UGH. I never watched naruto, and NEVER will X(

well, I stayed a whole year silent, listening and learning, and after that I started speaking english. Of course it wasn't fluent as it is now, but that was the start of it ^^
ah, I should do the same....I've never traveled out of europe! well, not that I travel much anyway....but it would be awesome to travel together! For example, if you ever come to Italy, I could be your travel guide! Apart from Rome, you'd have to visit Tuscany and all its wonderful cities. To me, it's the most beautiful italian region, even if I'm heart-bound to my own native region, Lazio.
I'm glad you have a unite family! However, wouldn't you like to live alone? Sometimes I just feel the urge that I have to escape from home and run off to a place of my own

hehe, thank you! well, over the internet everyone is more sociable, but yes, I would say I'm a pretty sociable person, if you give me a starting point, for example music or art ^^ well, I believe friends are a really important thing in young people's lives, so it's good you have at least one I hope you will deepen your relationship with this people, so you can create your very own group of friends also, I'm glad that ugly period of your life is over. You know, sometimes we just need people close to us to help us out psychologically in life

hehe, this is practically what I do these days. *and I get more feedback afterwards, mwahaha! *
russian-english, you say? I've found you an example of an exaggerated russian accent, the worst case, so to speak. an actual russian guy ironically retells an old stupid bandit serial. here: [link]
hm, now I'm very curious, how the actual italian accent sounds.

oh, Finland was very nice. when I was there in January, it was about -15/-20 degrees and there were metre-deep snow drifts, just like back in SPb, but the scenery was fantastic and very clean(!), and Helsinki was very pleasant. although it's incredibly small, compared to SPb. the funny thing was the incredible amount of russian tourists in the city centre, I had an impression, that literally every second person is a goddamn compatriot.XD
ah yeas, it was smth like this: [link]

WHOOOO, visit SPb in summer!! that would be simply FANTASTIC. I DO hope you both decide to go in the end. yes, I guess, I'll be in the city in August. I rarely leave anywhere in summer these days. and by the way, the end of july-the beginning of august is practically the best time to visit SPb, because our nasty weather settles down at last, all the flowers are in bloom and if you come in july, you might even catch the end of the white nights. but august is great too.
however, I'm not sure, but getting the russian Visa may turn out a long process, so I recommend you find out the all essential information in advance.

oh yes, I've heard a great deal about Howl's Moving Castle and even seen loads of cosplays of it's characters, so I'll definitely watch it in the near future.
well, actually, the most interesting part of Death Note is the first 15 episodes. the next 20 feel way too dragged on, just like most anime serials feel. DN should have stopped at the 15th episode.
aha, Naruto is such an idiotic soap-opera. ninja-Santa-Barbara.

yeees, I imagine it would be wonderful to travel with you like that. I do hope this opportunity will become more realistic in a while.

noo, I definitely don't want to live alone now. actually, I was forced to live practically alone for two years, because the rest of my family had to move temporarily to Moscow. that was nightmarish. partly because it was a hard time by itself (finishing school, enrolling university, 1st year at uni) and partly because I wasn't accustomed to that situation. they came to visit me every 2-3 weeks in the weekends, but I've had quite hard depression-like states for 2-3 times in that period. that's scary to remember. although I understand that now living alone won't be that scary, I still don't want to try again at all.
*omg, I talk too much about myself again XD*

oh yeah, I definitely know about the meaning of close people.
you know, I envy sociable people at times. they can communicate easily, while I often have to break stupid inner boundaries to do just the same.
you are VERY lucky to be sociable. I'm so glad for you.

oh, I also forgot to answer: I've never tried working on two big pics at the same time. I'm afraid I'd be too distracted and dispersed to finish both of them decently.
and yes, my current unrealized concept is another big James-related poster-styled pic. I have a whole metaphorical concept I want to place in it, I have some ready ideas os the composition, I've even found a couple of perfect reference pics! I just CAN'T START. these things happen too often to me. =\
btw, I want to try making some big complicated poster-like art, because I'm seriously thinking of earning some money in the future by designing some metal-art like, you know, posters, T-shirts, bags and in the ideal case even the CD-art!
this sounds quite utopian, but I'd very much like to try.

I could have and should have gone into detail about why it is so great, but I was in shock haha.
It's beautiful.

I like how you did him. Only the hair doesn't fit so well. Maybe you should use a smaller brush and add more details
The rest is really very nice

thanks for a nice comment.
yes, maybe I should have added more details to the hair. but since I was painting him with a mouse, I grew extremely tired of all other details and simply forgot about the hair.
