The State of the Community AddressAs many of you are probably aware, there has been a long period of inactivity or a reduction of activity across the entire CSS community. Many have moved on to other things, spend less time on dA or just are no longer interested in CSS. But I would like to change that. I have been discussing the situation in the backrooms of several groups with various fellow CSS mods that there has been a lack of enthusiasm in the CSS community. Many have tried revitalizing it throughout the years, but participation has lolled. Contests getting one or just a few entries, despite offering interesting prizes... Submissions being declined for expiring... As Quiless has put it, dA CSS has fallen asleep. Well, he and I want to brainstorm ideas to jump start the entire CSS community again. So I am asking here for those reading this to bring forth ideas to pique interests.
First, to address submissions expiring, I went ahead and reduced the number of votes for all votable things by one. I hope my fellow SuperBabes do not mind me taking that liberty, but I know they are not as active in the group (no one is) any more. I'm hoping that small change will remedy that. However, I hardly ever even see submissions to this group. And on deviantCSS , one of the most popular CSS groups (there are many top ones, not excluding for any reason), I do not have the ability to moderate that sort of thing to prevent that. I've always considered these two groups to be my 'Main Group', however this one lacks activity from Members and Contributors alike. Today, I marked CSS-Babes as my Main. Since I cannot voice change there, I will voice it here.
I cannot Invite any guys to the 'Dedicated Hunk' rank, but I believe that rank is open to join requests. Hunks have limited permissions since the theme of this group is for Babes, however, they are able to submit to specific folders: CSS News Blogs and Tutorials. They are also able to vote. So basically, it is a light admin duty position. Hunks are able to submit journals, so I am inviting Quiless to request the position here to be able to coordinate an initiative to bring back the CSS community. Dedicated Hunks actually have moderation privileges that the Babes do not. So, if any guys do not mind a CSS moderating position that is not focused on submissions, you are welcomed to request a join. Currently, all guys are Members only and cannot submit to our galleries.
Submissions UpdateTo cure the lack of submissions, I would like to announce a Call To Code. Babes, we need you to look through your galleries and find highlights you would like showcased here to submit or make new skins to be featured. Members, if you have been making loads of skins since you've originally joined here, we want to see them. Apply for Babes, we only require one fully coded by you skin in your gallery. That means, not a template, not snippets of someone else's work and definitely nothing pilfered and we will check. But, you must also prove you are dedicated to being a Babe, tell us why you want to be a Babe in your join request. Even if you are new to coding, we want to recruit you. The CSS community needs new coders and it has become stagnant with walls put up around groups by simply not being able to submit.
Submit Your Best
Solutions and Community EventsSo, how can we get everyone interested? Let's all pool together our ideas. I've been throwing a few around and any key ones shared here, I will add to this list. Think of creative ways to get people back in the game. Contests already have proven to not be enough as they aren't getting entrants and they feel closed to those who are not adept at coding. So we need a new draw. I already know there is still a lot of interest in learning to code, and all the groups (like eCSSited and CSS-DYK ) have been quiet. Every tutorial or walkthrough has not been done. dA has changed its old codes, added things that need fixes... So all of our tutorials are mostly out of date. If you can, make a new tutorial or update your existing ones to reflect current codes. Okay, starting the list:
- Brainstorm
- Tutorials/Walkthroughs and snippets
Make updated guides and helpful resources
Create video tutorials or interactive tools - Mentoring
Take someone under your wing to teach them - Weekly Challenge
Start an article giving a weekly challenge to code - Meet n' Greet Collab
Pair Designers and Coders - Show and Thumbshare
Newcomers introduce yourselves and thumbshare your best codes
We Need YouBring this conversation to other CSS groups outside of the backrooms. The backroom is causing the lack of new stuff. We aren't actively inviting people to become contributors. We aren't enticing people to join or submit. Instead, we sit there, forgotten. So share this, shout it from the rooftops and wake your neighbors. Or just share it in your status, your journal, or groups and forums. Invite others to join the conversation and that brings us all back right there.

Yes!
We need CSS-DYK !
The community reboot seems to be going well. Lots of new faces and the old hats are peeping in and posting stuffs. I think the week in review article helps, since it features a lot of the new people and introduces them to the groups. Since many times people don't think to join a group or submit their work to a group. Plus, all the features encourages them to make more skins So, I'd say that has been successful.
The other articles, I have only had one participant for the challenges And The thumbshare was about dead. And no one is asking for the ask-a-babe... And I've run out of tips to add to the ends of articles.
I am starting homeschool, so the articles need to take a back burner. I want to design a new skin for them that better highlights what I want to express. I want it to read more like an article.
And now that my sub is up, can't schedule things, so I am writing everything late. Lols, I am so terrible at deadlines, even self inflicted ones.

YUS, RELEASE THE DYK'S!
Maybe we can ask LabLayers to invite some of the newbies (since they're usually the ones with more enthusiasm) to the group to help kickstart it off? I have no idea who's new, what's new in regards to CSS at dA (do we have transform yet???), and which of the oldies have left
Where can i find these week in review articles?
Also, I can help you guys brainstorm with tips in CSS-DYK 's backroom I have a few unfinished articles that i can umm... hand over
Btw if you're still an Alpha Tester, a sub would magically be arranged if you happened to mention it in the Skype group Funny thing is, even with a sub, I never used schedule cause I'd still write everything last minute

The hashtag for it is in my signature, all my articles are there. But it is posted in CSS-Babes , my main group.
I have some unfinished articles that need a coat of gloss, or two.
There hasn't been much in the way of testing atm, so it wouldn't feel right to ask. I asked last year and was granted the magical wish. Sub fairy! I've never been invited to the Skype group. Thanks for reminding me, I got distracted on my way to logging into Skype. Looook! Something shiny!!!!!
p.s. LabLayers replied to me here: comment on Call to Code
New person of note ClearStyle and... hmmm, I made a mini list here ---> Community Treasure (new to CSS groups at least)
Community Treasure #1The community treasure is to showcase and collect the goings ons of the dA CSS community. Any events, contests, article features, group activities, etc. Please share your events in the comments below. This article may be a bi-weekly or monthly periodical. Depending on community activity. Currently, it will be at the end of each month, if there is an update for a contest that has closed or been extended, please note the group, or GillianIvy and I'll edit the article.

Hey everyone!
It sure has been a while, hasn't it? Don't worry, I'm still alive.
I'm happy to help bring CSS-DYK back to life but I can't do it alone.

I'm here, but will be juggling dA things with homeschool, so I will be terrible at deadlines. (I ordered my lesson books a week before school started) I am a procrastinator and it takes every effort of my being to make assignments on time. lols. I do have some unfinished things in my Sta.sh that I'll have to figure out what I was on about and send on (or do we get a skin to post the article ourselves). I do not know what the current format was planned to be. That might be easiest for people to do?
Also, if you wanted any of the articles I am doing at CSS-Babes to crosspost there, I can. I'll be making new skins for them (in my free time on weekends) so they are more suitable for being shared amongst different groups. (see my signature for article hashtags)

The thing I've always wondered about is how big this community actually is. About a year ago (when I was last really involved with DA in general), I pretty much knew all the main CSS coders and was meeting a lot of new deviants who were in the process of learning, but there weren't a lot of us. Maybe a couple dozen?
At the same time, I remember miontre's Do-It-Yourself Skin tutorial and the CSS-DYK which racked up a ton of interest in coding, so it seems like there are people interested in CSS, who maybe just haven't posted anything yet.

There's a tonne of watchers across all the groups. I think deviantCSS has the most. But if you check out the About Us page, you'll see there are a lot of Babes. And they were all vetted as journal creators to become that rank. I think there are a lot of people who just remain behind the scenes and are still interested. Comments and faves give encouragement to me to keep posting things to stir up activity again. I hope the Challenge catches on. Since it is not a contest, having no deadlines, and the creator can choose from archived themes and still get featured, it might be more of a fun project.
I miss miontre ! He had wonderful CSS spirit. That sort of enthusiasm and talent really inspired the community. It was sad to go over CSS-DYK archives and see the most recent one was 2013. Another reason to try to kickstart things. When we make more tutorials, and other such draws, then more people will get excited about it and then we'll all be abuzz again.

Super cute, love the animations. You can do a live view by using your Sta.sh. Our group does accept these if you add image credits info. But to be a Babe, you must have more than one skin to submit.

Use Sta.sh Writer to write your preview journal. Add your skin and save but do not submit. This will give you a preview with a Sta.sh link.
Look forward to your joining. We only require more than one. All we ask is that they are unique, not just a copy of the first with theme changes. And we are always supportive of new skinners ;D

Personally, I stopped coding journals and modifying personal gallery skins because deviantART has been gearing up for an overhaul, and I want that to get over with so I can be aware of anything new and anything older doesn't break.

On my free skins I'm not good with it either, but the PC stuff needs to be updated. I stopped making new stuff since a few months due to all of dA code changes. Is it really too much to ask that all the changes for a certain area (aka journal code or gallery code) will be made at once? I hate updating 3 times or more a year b/c their project manager isn't able to coordinate this. dA is partially ruining the CSS community all by itself.

It's funny that this message got posted now. I was looking around through all the Journal skins to see what I had missed while I was away from DA. I found some rather nice ones and it sparked my creativity to want to create some again. I am not sure what groups to join or who to submit to anymore since so many things have changed in the last 4 years. Please advise.

gillianivyart In reply to littledeviltoo [2015-05-21 18:35:42 +0000 UTC]
Certainly,
Be sure to check join/submission guidelines, etc. Like journalcss has to have skins in your gallery to join as a Member, whereas deviantCSS does not but Members can submit. And eCSSited only allows resources, not finished skins like CSS-DYK which is another knowledge database. Here, only Babes can submit, Members cannot.
Look forward to seeing what you'll be posting.

Welcome to Babes! Here is the most recent rules:
NEW GROUP RULES: PLEASE READ !Hey babes!
So, it is time to settle some new rules for our group, to keep it updated and also because we’ve been facing some various issues lately that we have to solve. Please let me know if you think there’s something you would like to add/remove/modify. Accepting girls in the “Babes” category
From now on, the girls that we accept in “Babes” will have to prove that they are really interested in and dedicated to CSS. Meaning that if you require to be a “Babe”, you need to have more than one Complete CSS/CSS design in your gallery. Your codes will also be verified to make sure it is not stolen/copied from someone else’s code.
Submitting in our galleries
You have to submit your CSS in the right category: every misplaced submission will be denied.
Note that the “Feature” folder isn’t important in this group, we don’t really use it, so do

Yea, I posted here since I cannot post journals to deviantCSS . I've been a moderator here about the same amount of time. We only have one Dedicated Hunk and he has more privs than the Babes level. Then there is the CSS-Hunks group, unsure if it is active any more. I think the groups were more created as a gimmick. There are a lot more members in Babes than Hunks. I always seemed to find there are more females in dArelated coding. But on the CSS web design groups there seem to be more males.
And no, don't stop, you are one of the few who are still active. deviantCSS is having a hard time just getting enough votes and we cannot change the qty.

I just think that if you make some dedicatedtogendergroup, it's better to make it private or for this gender only - without positions with limited privs for another gender. It'd be fair at least. All the more not everyone understands such a gimmick.
Actually I didn't observe the lowering of activity in deviantCSS . It's the same as it was when I joined it. Maybe it's just one group, but someone even considers CSS-coding as some sort of programming work, you know, and things like programming always involved the restricted part of society, so it's expected from one point of view. Maybe some actions directed to process simplification could attract more people, but even then you can't make simple just everything.

I know contests have gone with few entrants in the past 2 years, looking through entries you can see a decline as well.
I didn't make the group, so not certain what the idea was behind it. I think it was mainly to highlight the works of the women in the community. And a single male was added to the group as a place of honor or appreciation, I guess. I just added a new gallery folder for Dedicated Hunks to be able to post to. But I can't invite any more and not sure, but it seems none can join that rank? I see no limit set to that. Guys can join Members, but no where else, it seems. I think only the Founder can invite a Hunk.
I'm not sure I know what you mean by the restricted part of society.

I just checked and co-founders have full control over the settings, so we should be able to reset that. Get back to me either in the backroom or thru PM to discuss this in detail. The dedicated Hunk was a moderator position, only available on supergroup status.

I'm not sure I know what you mean by the restricted part of society.I mean that point of view that programming is some sort of "elite" work and not everyone can code, which is still wide-spreaded. Many people even don't want to try because of it.

Oh yea, I see. I never found learning to code hard. It is just like learning a new language, I guess, only there are words you already understand. And I learned HTML first, so it was easy. But yes, I've come across elitists who act like they have the map to the Holy Grail or something. I never learned Java and more advanced stuffs, but that is from laziness. Not because I couldn't.
Now there are all those code training websites like code.org. Which makes it even easier to learn. So I hope people will not feel overwhelmed by facing a wall of code. ;D I like seeing new people excited to learn about CSS.

I've noticed a both communities I've been involved with have been pretty dead. (Emoticons and dAR stuff)
I really like the idea of the weekly challenge, it reminds me of 2014's Journal Skin January which had some really awesome prompts, and I'd be happy to try that out, as my main problem is having no ideas .
Mentoring has been fairly successful in the past too, it's how I got into doing it though eCSSited , and I'm sure more people are willing to learn.
It's nice to see people trying to get things moving around again, so many people have become inactive (definitely not including me ).

Really, emoticons too! We just need to kickstart the whole dA community! I remember that Journal Skin January, I loved the ideas there. I think I might make a goal to start that in June, as I'm homeschooling my son. I have been wanting to do several articles for a long time that are all neglected in my sta.sh and such. I had an idea to do "Babe of the Month", interviewing and featuring one of the Babes every month. Kinda like a Babe calendar. ;D
I mentored at eCSSercise , but it was a lot of hard work. The Mentors slowly stopped mentoring and there were too many students for us to handle. Eventually the group collapsed. There are definitely people willing to learn.
I think a lot of the inactivity is just other priorities. Some are CVs now or working on outside projects. And I have been in this community for 5 years now. So I saw it dwindle from where it once was. There was a lot of enthusiasm. But now, some of the people who really made our days brighter aren't on dA any more (thinking of miontre and others).
Thanks for your thoughts

I have wanted to learn CSS for a while. But the tutorials I find have limited information, and are often confusing. If the CSS community came together to make videos (put tutorials on YouTube or another 'video-by-user' website, and each teach the people who want to learn different tricks and tips to create CSS, I'd definitely would be willing to see that. Explanation via motion and sound is much easier to understand than that of only static visuals and worded advice/description.

codeacademy.com is brilliant for beginners. It's free, and walks you through with video tutorials and challenges etc.

Excellent, I was thinking video tutorials would be great. I believe ginkgografix already has some in her galleries (though she might not be dedicating as much time to answering CSS questions). Both Celvas and TehAngelsCry have mentioned wanting to do tutorials and would like to know what tutorials would be helpful.

Great! I personally think that knowing what different written codes mean would be helpful. That's just my thought!

I still answer questions, als long as they are not too lazy to figure out simple things on their own.

I still answer questions as well, though I do not get as many as I used to. Just wanted to still show others your resources but steer away from sending you too many notes.
