The State of the Community AddressAs many of you are probably aware, there has been a long period of inactivity or a reduction of activity across the entire CSS community. Many have moved on to other things, spend less time on dA or just are no longer interested in CSS. But I would like to change that. I have been discussing the situation in the backrooms of several groups with various fellow CSS mods that there has been a lack of enthusiasm in the CSS community. Many have tried revitalizing it throughout the years, but participation has lolled. Contests getting one or just a few entries, despite offering interesting prizes... Submissions being declined for expiring... As Quiless has put it, dA CSS has fallen asleep. Well, he and I want to brainstorm ideas to jump start the entire CSS community again. So I am asking here for those reading this to bring forth ideas to pique interests.
First, to address submissions expiring, I went ahead and reduced the number of votes for all votable things by one. I hope my fellow SuperBabes do not mind me taking that liberty, but I know they are not as active in the group (no one is) any more. I'm hoping that small change will remedy that. However, I hardly ever even see submissions to this group. And on deviantCSS , one of the most popular CSS groups (there are many top ones, not excluding for any reason), I do not have the ability to moderate that sort of thing to prevent that. I've always considered these two groups to be my 'Main Group', however this one lacks activity from Members and Contributors alike. Today, I marked CSS-Babes as my Main. Since I cannot voice change there, I will voice it here.
I cannot Invite any guys to the 'Dedicated Hunk' rank, but I believe that rank is open to join requests. Hunks have limited permissions since the theme of this group is for Babes, however, they are able to submit to specific folders: CSS News Blogs and Tutorials. They are also able to vote. So basically, it is a light admin duty position. Hunks are able to submit journals, so I am inviting Quiless to request the position here to be able to coordinate an initiative to bring back the CSS community. Dedicated Hunks actually have moderation privileges that the Babes do not. So, if any guys do not mind a CSS moderating position that is not focused on submissions, you are welcomed to request a join. Currently, all guys are Members only and cannot submit to our galleries.
Submissions UpdateTo cure the lack of submissions, I would like to announce a Call To Code. Babes, we need you to look through your galleries and find highlights you would like showcased here to submit or make new skins to be featured. Members, if you have been making loads of skins since you've originally joined here, we want to see them. Apply for Babes, we only require one fully coded by you skin in your gallery. That means, not a template, not snippets of someone else's work and definitely nothing pilfered and we will check. But, you must also prove you are dedicated to being a Babe, tell us why you want to be a Babe in your join request. Even if you are new to coding, we want to recruit you. The CSS community needs new coders and it has become stagnant with walls put up around groups by simply not being able to submit.
Submit Your Best
Solutions and Community EventsSo, how can we get everyone interested? Let's all pool together our ideas. I've been throwing a few around and any key ones shared here, I will add to this list. Think of creative ways to get people back in the game. Contests already have proven to not be enough as they aren't getting entrants and they feel closed to those who are not adept at coding. So we need a new draw. I already know there is still a lot of interest in learning to code, and all the groups (like eCSSited and CSS-DYK ) have been quiet. Every tutorial or walkthrough has not been done. dA has changed its old codes, added things that need fixes... So all of our tutorials are mostly out of date. If you can, make a new tutorial or update your existing ones to reflect current codes. Okay, starting the list:
- Brainstorm
- Tutorials/Walkthroughs and snippets
Make updated guides and helpful resources
Create video tutorials or interactive tools - Mentoring
Take someone under your wing to teach them - Weekly Challenge
Start an article giving a weekly challenge to code - Meet n' Greet Collab
Pair Designers and Coders - Show and Thumbshare
Newcomers introduce yourselves and thumbshare your best codes
We Need YouBring this conversation to other CSS groups outside of the backrooms. The backroom is causing the lack of new stuff. We aren't actively inviting people to become contributors. We aren't enticing people to join or submit. Instead, we sit there, forgotten. So share this, shout it from the rooftops and wake your neighbors. Or just share it in your status, your journal, or groups and forums. Invite others to join the conversation and that brings us all back right there.

Ah okay, it was hard to know what you meant ;D I hope it will. I am seeing many comments, but a lot of the old names in CSS here have not replied. I would like to know who is still here and visiting dA at the very least. Even if they aren't very active in submitting skins.

This is definitely interesting. I stopped contributing to the CSS Babes gallery relatively early on because my asking for inclusion was mainly ignored. When I brought it up with a fellow Babe, she said that I should see it more as a badge of honor instead of a group to submit my work to. A sobering moment for me. I will definitely try to contribute once more, in the future. At the moment, I still don't have a decent PC setup to work with.
Thank you for the mention, btw.! I'm honored that you would include me.
Like TehAngelsCry , I can always help out with tutorials and tips and also answer general questions. That I do a lot in the profile design department already. But it's also true that it's easier to do something when one knows what people want and need.

That is a weird thing for someone to say. I haven't submitted as much here lately because I don't want to just spam my stuff, so I only share select things. But I will submit more across the board. As different people watch different groups.
You know I love your work ;D So glad to include you. I hope your PC situation improves. I primarily am using a laptop now, which is a deterrent to making new skins. I share the desktop with my bf and when I get on there I cannot decide what to do, so end up playing Hearthstone or something. lols. I want my own PC, just for art!

I thought the same thing: weird. There's no point to an art group that has no art.
And to hear it still makes me feel warm and giddy. Yeah. Oh yeah. To the laptop and it being a deterrent to making new skins. My PC's motherboard died in a most spectacular fashion and took some of my hardware with it (thank the goddess not the hard drives!). I never buy ready-to-use, I always select all the parts of a PC myself and build it myself (because pros or not, I once had to open the whole thing up because they plugged in a cable wrong...), so it will take some time. There are some parts I am willing to wait for, because in fact I hadn't planned on buying a new PC until the end of the year. But I feel you. Laptop has a way of making one feel useless in the art department.

lols. But anyways, CSS3 related to deviantART would probably be a desired tutorial.

Not all works, only specific things. Transform and transition work. Zoom does not. Before/After work... Translate does not. I think that is all that works.

They have them blocked. Or rather, not enabled? I dunno. They restrict us, but staff articles don't have that restriction. Like they can make theirs full screen, instead of the deviation bar on the side. Just like position:float isn't available. I want that one. But know it probably floats on the page, not just the journal areas.

Also, just created, a new folder for our Dedicated Hunks submissions. This will allow for them to submit their CSS to our galleries. Any changes I've made, BaB-Jane and pica-ae are welcomed to alter and reprimand me for not getting their thoughts first. Sorry ladies if I jumped the gun!
