Description

In a rare twist... This is a character study from and old old story of mine called Legacy Protocol where the main character has to disguise herself as a guy so she can take command of her father's ship.

*It's complicated.* aka *Box full of tropes*

Her father was captain of the Phoenix Legacy. The ship is very old and has been passed down from father to son for generations as it is genetically locked to the family and the AI will destroy the ship unless command is passed on to a genetically compatible heir.

So why can't she command the ship as a woman? Because *plot device*. Specifically it is considered bad luck to have a woman on a ship as anything other than passenger or cargo. But it isn't completely superstition as the region of space is detrimental to females and fatal after prolonged exposure. As such women rule the planets and men rule the stars (suddenly I see an analogy between planets as eggs and space ships as... well... never mind).

So the girl's father and mother met before he was declared a pirate (so many tropes in this box...) and they had a relationship (sometimes when a woman and man love each other very much...) but the girl's mother had to return to her world and her father had to return to the stars (so poetic...). But! There was a betrayal and the father and his crew were declared pirates and forced to run for many years.

Meanwhile the aforementioned relationship produced a child but the message was incomplete by the time it reached the captain so he did not know anything other than he had a child that he may never get to see.

Some years later the captain is attacked and is dying... slowly... well slow enough that some of his crew decide to find his heir and bring him to the ship before it blows itself up.

They go to the mother's world and find the mother and that their only hope is not an heir but a girl. Well that won't work.

Or will it. The girl really wants to go to see her father and one of the crew thinks maybe the girl can unlock the ship even if she can't command it. So the two of them take a ship and head out.

On the way they concoct a plan to disguise the girl as a boy just to unlock the ship and prevent mutiny.

But once the girl sees her father and connects with the AI she realizes she can't turn the ship over to someone else and must continue the charade...

And find out who betrayed her father before the effects of space kill her. *dramatic music*

I'm sure i can squeeze a few more tropes in there. But that's the very condensed version of what drives the story... in my head.

Now if I can just decide on some names for these people.

I think the main two influences were Plastic Little and Space Battleship Yamato and Mulan.
