Take the case of the Mummy, an age-old concept of fear of the dead coming back to life. To the ancient Egyptians, mummification itself was a form of science rooted in their religious beliefs. While Universal put a fantastical new spin on this iteration seen in 2017’s the Mummy, it still kept true to the roots that scared theater goers of yesteryear—the walking dead powered by mysticism. But however powerful this mysticism, it gained control of biological science to reanimate this corpse and bring the Mummy back to life. Every creature, monster or character from the shadows of a nightmare can find its origin in the annals of Dark Science. Artwork by: lancerdrake Take a look behind the scenes on how The Mummy blended mysticism and science fiction in the creation of Dr. Jekyll’s lab - The Prodigium. Dr. Frankenstein's lab in Mary Shelley's 1819 novel was the birthplace of a new kind of science. In the book Mary Shelley uses Frankenstein's experiment as a way to explore the limitations of scientific progress, and to ask questions about the ethics of it. Specifically, can science resurrect the dead, and more to the point, should it? Generations of storytellers after Shelley would incorporate examples of science being used to dark, foreboding ends. Not least among them was the Robert Louis Stevenson character Dr. Jekyll, and his famously destructive alter-ego, Mr. Hyde. Dr. Jekyll's lab, housed in London's Museum of Natural History, also serves as a headquarters for a secret group dedicated to finding and neutralizing evil. It is called The Prodigium. In The Mummy, Dr. Jekyll has been transformed from merely being a scientist with a dark secret to an academic who specializes in evil "Mary Shelley... explore the limitations of scientific progress, and to ask questions about the ethics of it." and spends his life working to hunt it down. The Prodigium is the venue where Jekyll conducts his studies and stores artifacts. Having access to the resources of the museum allows him to perform in-depth research. Among the many curiosities seen inside the lab you'll find the skull of Dracula as well as The Creature From the Black Lagoon's arm. Studying such auspicious and dangerous creatures is far from what constitutes a routine scientific endeavor. Just like Dr. Frankenstein flipping the switch and electrifying his cadaver back to life, this is a different kind of science with its own set of dark consequences. Dark science is what happens when science goes too far. For Dr. Frankenstein, it meant inadvertently creating a monster. For historical characters in fiction like Dr. Faust, it meant making a deal with the devil in order to discern the secrets of the universe. The Prodigium ultimately may have a noble goal driving it, but that doesn't mean that it's safe, or that unintended consequences can't spring out of it. Wells, a super advanced civilization from Mars attacks earth with metal walkers equipped with hi-tech weapons. Science has long provided a foundation for tales of monsters, evil forces, and other mortal perils. When Mary Shelley sat down to write Frankenstein, one of the ideological "Dark science originates from exploring the connection between scientific progress and the potential for danger."questions she wrestled with was the idea that although progress in society followed from knowledge—like diseases being cured, or transportation improving—there was no inherently good guiding principle underpinning that progress. In other words, technological advances could be used for evil just as easily as they could be used for good. That truth opened up all kinds of possibilities, especially for storytellers looking to tell harrowing tales. Wells are considered among the founding authors of science fiction, the genre didn't exist as we know it when these writers were alive. These authors laid the groundwork for later science fiction storytellers, and they also founded a long trend of combining speculative, fictional science with Horror or Gothic storytelling. The common element that stories traversing these two genres almost always shared? Action, and plenty of it. It's only natural for conflict to arrive when weaponized machines start taking over cities, or when re-animated corpses begin terrorizing the living, but heroism and action-packed adventures also provided a solid underpinning for these kinds of stories, which manage to explore profound questions about society and progress while still providing a thoroughly entertaining experience. Very Good Question, I think Zombies take the cake in the matters of Dark Science......There are alot of movies and television shows about Zombies that touch on the scientific side, but the dark side has to come from a human side. The moment when a family member or friend turns, not only you have to say goodbye but you have to kill them........Maggie is a good movie that describes this dark side. Think about all the movies that describe dark science, usually in single or remote locations where the incident can be contained.....Zombies created by a bacteria or virus that changes your DNA structure to its simplest primitive functions where cognitive skills are non-existent.....an invisible Monster that spreads like wildfire through cities and countries....In some of these movies they find a cheesy way in finding the cure.......However ask any scientist, finding a cure for a outbreak like a zombie virus is an impossible task to find before the whole earth is devoured. FEAR is not created when you have options to escape, its exists when there are no more options!

1. The story that Edgar Allen Poe wrote about a mummy dissection- it was rather humourous, however, if you get down to it, it's not exactly the most peaceful thing ever written.
2. It would be great to be able to bring back the dead, and time travel...unleashing Armageddon would be nice too. However, time travelling is a bit too risky for my liking, and bringing back the dead can have many unintended side effects not accounted for.
3. Cloning hasn't exactly been utilised incorrectly yet, but as demonstrated in Star Wars...it can yield some rather...surprising...results.

I think there actually is an infinite number of parallel timelines, so maybe we could all have our own personal universe by creating a new dimension (like 3D.5) to be free. This should fracture space and time but meh. - Is there an example of a potential misuse of science that scares you?

1. I absolutely love the The X-Files and the Blade Runner(1992/3)
2. I would certainly create the Replicants from the Blade Runner movie to ease human life and to fulfill *ehem* sexual desires despite the consequences that happened in the actual movie.
3. Geo-engineering frightens me. Like in the movie Geostorm, I'm afraid it could happen in real life.

1. Ghost in the Shell by Masamune Shirow.
2. I would create teleportation technology to decrease road usage, though that would probably eventually require enormous disposal processes of our old transport, cars, trucks, planes, as scrap yards would fill up. That would require a lot of energy to power. The downside to telaporting would be that people would have more time to work or fit work in their schedule and would have less time to themselves. I feel that employers may demand more time if their employees are able to travel faster. Perhaps it would be better to invent cybernetic wings that are powered by the body's energy, then all the traffic could happen in the air and the person would gain exercise too. But it would have too operate perfectly or else their may be fatalities or casualties involved. I would like to fly with wings though.
3. I feel that an aesthetic cybernation, such as removing your legs on purpose just to be fitted with better cyborg legs that for example run faster, or like plastic surgery would be quite a scary development. When necessary cybernation would be extremely handy but the line between changes being required or for aesthetic purposes is often blurred when money gets involved.

1 - Was the "Alien" series, like Alien: Convenant and others of the series with xenomorphs.
2 - I think i would make a mind technology, that would let me absorb knowledge of other people, and erase memories of other people, including mine, but to erase you have to select the part that you want to erase, hmmm, i think i would use it.
3 - Yup, everyday day people are inventing new things but these things... Some of they are very dangerous if goes out of control, would kill people, animals and destroy places.

2. yes I would want to be invisible I think that it would be cool and dangerous. Think of all the adventure and knowledge one could learn. Go place no one else can. wow. And yes I would push the possibilities, that's how "real" science is made, by pushing on these. If ones in the past didn't experiments we would really know who we are as people or how to treat medical problems. There are still a lot of known things out there to be explored.
3. yes, everyday people are trying new things, but that's to better our life's and who doesn't want that.

Believe it or not, I loved Kenneth Branagh's 1994 film Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. It almost seemed feasible, except for the fact that it took place in the 1700s. The monster was scary (Robert De Niro), human, and feeling. I loved the electricity aspect of how they brought the monster to life and Helena Bonahm Carter's Elizabeth, was supremely acted. Patrick Doyle's music, in my opinion, was one of the greatest films scores ever composed with its huge orchestra and the main theme was catchy and remember-able. I loved the film and will never forget it.

1. In Bram Stoker's Dracula I absolutely loves the scene where Van Helsing is explaining vampire bats to the scientists as a way to establish him as an expert (contemporary to that time of course) on blood diseases. Have never forgotten that scene!
2. Easy! I would drink a potion that would let me always remember everyone's names! What would be an appropriate side effect? Permanent bad breath 
3. I think the idea of stopping the human ageing process is really scary. It seems a little selfish to fill the world with a bunch of hangers-on taking up all the room from the generations that should come in the future! The generations of the future have as much of a right to their lives in their time as we have to our lives in our time.
