Learn how science fiction helps build better monsters in film, literature, and beyond!

Facebook Google+ Science Fiction in Horror and Fantasy Author: eawood Header artwork by: vladmrk When one thinks of creatures that lurk in the realms of horror and fantasy, an often overlooked detail is how science influences their creation and how action and adventure bring their narrative to life. Take the case of the Mummy, an age-old concept of fear of the dead coming back to life. To the ancient Egyptians, mummification itself was a form of science rooted in their religious beliefs. While Universal put a fantastical new spin on this iteration seen in 2017’s the Mummy, it still kept true to the roots that scared theater goers of yesteryear—the walking dead powered by mysticism. But however powerful this mysticism, it gained control of biological science to reanimate this corpse and bring the Mummy back to life. Every creature, monster or character from the shadows of a nightmare can find its origin in the annals of Dark Science. Artwork by: lancerdrake Take a look behind the scenes on how The Mummy blended mysticism and science fiction in the creation of Dr. Jekyll’s lab - The Prodigium. Dr. Frankenstein's lab in Mary Shelley's 1819 novel was the birthplace of a new kind of science. In the book Mary Shelley uses Frankenstein's experiment as a way to explore the limitations of scientific progress, and to ask questions about the ethics of it. Specifically, can science resurrect the dead, and more to the point, should it? Generations of storytellers after Shelley would incorporate examples of science being used to dark, foreboding ends. Not least among them was the Robert Louis Stevenson character Dr. Jekyll, and his famously destructive alter-ego, Mr. Hyde. Dr. Jekyll's lab, housed in London's Museum of Natural History, also serves as a headquarters for a secret group dedicated to finding and neutralizing evil. It is called The Prodigium. In The Mummy, Dr. Jekyll has been transformed from merely being a scientist with a dark secret to an academic who specializes in evil "Mary Shelley... explore the limitations of scientific progress, and to ask questions about the ethics of it." and spends his life working to hunt it down. The Prodigium is the venue where Jekyll conducts his studies and stores artifacts. Having access to the resources of the museum allows him to perform in-depth research. Among the many curiosities seen inside the lab you'll find the skull of Dracula as well as The Creature From the Black Lagoon's arm. Studying such auspicious and dangerous creatures is far from what constitutes a routine scientific endeavor. Just like Dr. Frankenstein flipping the switch and electrifying his cadaver back to life, this is a different kind of science with its own set of dark consequences. Dark science is what happens when science goes too far. For Dr. Frankenstein, it meant inadvertently creating a monster. For historical characters in fiction like Dr. Faust, it meant making a deal with the devil in order to discern the secrets of the universe. The Prodigium ultimately may have a noble goal driving it, but that doesn't mean that it's safe, or that unintended consequences can't spring out of it. Artwork by: Valzonline Creature from the black lagoon ogilvie The idea of dark science originates from exploring the connection between scientific progress and the potential for danger. By trying to break the barrier between life and death, Dr. Frankenstein creates a monster. In looking for evidence of a long-lost species, the scientists in The Creature From the Black Lagoon incur the wrath of a mysterious menace. In Jules Verne's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea men use new technology to explore new depths and get more than they bargained for. In The War of the Worlds by H.G. Wells, a super advanced civilization from Mars attacks earth with metal walkers equipped with hi-tech weapons. Science has long provided a foundation for tales of monsters, evil forces, and other mortal perils. When Mary Shelley sat down to write Frankenstein, one of the ideological "Dark science originates from exploring the connection between scientific progress and the potential for danger."questions she wrestled with was the idea that although progress in society followed from knowledge—like diseases being cured, or transportation improving—there was no inherently good guiding principle underpinning that progress. In other words, technological advances could be used for evil just as easily as they could be used for good. That truth opened up all kinds of possibilities, especially for storytellers looking to tell harrowing tales. Many of the most recognizable horror stories and thriller titles of all time—Frankenstein, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, War of the Worlds, and The Creature From the Black Lagoon among them—deal with man's pursuit of knowledge leading to terrifying outcomes, or show how technological progress can have deadly consequences. Artwork by: AshleyCope Although Mary Shelley, Jules Verne, and H.G. Wells are considered among the founding authors of science fiction, the genre didn't exist as we know it when these writers were alive. These authors laid the groundwork for later science fiction storytellers, and they also founded a long trend of combining speculative, fictional science with Horror or Gothic storytelling. The common element that stories traversing these two genres almost always shared? Action, and plenty of it. It's only natural for conflict to arrive when weaponized machines start taking over cities, or when re-animated corpses begin terrorizing the living, but heroism and action-packed adventures also provided a solid underpinning for these kinds of stories, which manage to explore profound questions about society and progress while still providing a thoroughly entertaining experience. "It's only natural for conflict to arrive when weaponized machines start taking over cities"Dr. Jekyll is perhaps the perfect embodiment of this kind of blending. His work requires putting himself in harm's way, but it also requires the strong mental faculties of science. And the fact that he has a violent alter-ego ensures that chaos and action will follow wherever he goes. Dr. Jekyll's future path of horror, science fiction, and action will definitely be worth keeping an eye on. 1. A science fiction influence you say? Genetically engineered monsters or viruses/microorganisms creating monsters. The imagination of the scientists/technical know-how along with the limits of biology and physics are the few things holding back a nearly endless spectrum of nightmares that could be created in some laboratory and could well exceed what we could imagine that something of flesh and blood is capable of. Plus there fund to fight in video games!
2. 2 things is what I would do, one artificial life extension allowing me to live hundreds or thousands of years so that, two I could explore the stars using space travel technology experiencing all that is out there in our galaxy or at least as much as I could finally answering lifelong questions. And as for the consequences.... Who gives a shit the universe is a big place and if it screws up earth somehow I'll be long gone and the technology to leave it will be there so no biggie.
3. The technology used for the police state getting better making it harder to fight back to the point where we can't do a damn thing and were at the mercy of the few psychos who created this police state and run it from the shadows.

when i saw this, i couldn't resist; egyptian culture is so awesome and i love it!
1. i'm not sure if it's one of those categories but i really love zombie apocolypses. the thought of a virus outbreak happening out of nowhere, trying to survive, having to kill others in order to live until the invasion stops. i always love concepts like that. i may not be a fan of 'the walking dead' but i do adore its theme alot!
2. hmmm idk. i guess to be able to allow people to use elements. it sounds corny ik but; i love element bending and always been since i've learned 'bout avatar. i would try to like make ppl able to bend the four basic elements: water, earth, fire, and air. 'course there won't be no avatar, unless we would go into that 'avatar age' lol.
3. misuse? well humanity is becomign stronger and smarter by the day, it honestly scares me the most. but really, what scares me the most is losing the beautiful life on earth. think about it: thousands years later from now, humanity has now killed off every single creature known. no life is no where to be seen. with no food or water, humanity must either starve or make process food, which is unhealthy for humanity. ppl now don't really care what we humans are doing to the earth. it makes me upset and scared bc we will lose the beauty of earth.

1. You mean things that present themselves as horror or fantasy storiies, but feature some science, like this film? Rather than the other way round, like the way Star Trek frequently has what anybody else would call magic but calls it ESP or eneergy beings? (And I don't mind especially the Vulcans, it's so adorable to see the Vulcans trying to pretend that wtheir species is perfectly possible and rational and not at all spooky.) Or the entirely outrageous behaviour of Girl Genius?
Well, the thing that springs to mind at the moment is Discworld. Discworls's magic all has definite laws of nature and wonderful ones, and wizards buulding their version of particle accelarators to study them, often with disastrous results. Anyone reemember the Ambiguous Puzuma? Which runs faster than the speed of light, "meaning that if you can see a puzuma, it isn't there"? Also, big fan of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. (I started reading a webcomic called The Glass Scientists, which I thoroughy recommend, and that eventually provoed me to read the book.) Whoops, didn't mean to write so much.
2. I'd find cures for mental illnesses especially a thing called PANS. PANS is a horrible condition where - allegedly, it's still being argued over but the evidence seems to be getting more definite - the immune system responds in an abnormal way to an infection and ends up disruptingg parts of the brain instead. Healthy kids turn into ticcing, phobia-ridden wrecks often literally overnight. They're making some progress with working out what's going on and how to treat it, but it's moving at a snails pace. (If it turns out that the auto-immune theory is wrong after all, then, obvoiusly, I'd find out what the hell IS causing these weird cases and how to fix that - they definitely exist.)
Failing that, a TARDIS
Actually, if you had a TARDIS that'd go a long way to solving the first problem too, ask around the galaxy, some alien race or other is bound to know something useuful! even if you don't go the cheat's route and just go to the future when WE've worked it out and bring back the answer Even getting hold of a decent space-magic-hypnotist'd be better than nothing. Yes any space-magic-hypnotist. Yes even her. I think that goes some way to answering the "regardless of consequences" question...
3. Never mind "potential", there are plenty of things going on right now that scare me. (I'm a student member of Scientists for Global Responsibility so I hear a lot of inside news about what scientists themselves are worried about.) Genetic engineering, nuclear weapons obviously, artificial intelligence, all could go right or could go horribly wrong, and there's often not much to keep an eye on them.
But one thing that seems to me have gone badly wrong already is the extent to which the Ineternet is being desinged to manipulate people's behaviour. I mean, they make no bones about it; refining and exploitiong these tricks is a whole industry in itself and gives employment to droves of psychologists.
Moset websites that exist simply to be websites and don't sell anything are designed to trick people into spending as many hours a day on them as possible, whether or not they're actually acheieveing anything thay wanted to, because their advertisers pay them per viewer per hour. Yep, that's right, Facebook is purposely designed to waste your time. And yes, I do think DeviantArt is pretty guilty of this. I have to keep a constant watch on myself with this site. Well, if we've now created this vast machinery to soak up people's spare time, so much less time for the human race to write, invent stff, have all the new ideas that come into our heads when we have nothing much to do...
Meanwhile, to take another example, search results are frequently engineered to give you the results their alogrithm suggests you'll be most likely to tread; fine - but that even extends to selecting only the news and information articles it calculates you'll like best, reliable or not. Got the wrong end of the stick about Muslims, or Christians, or your government? Google will never be crude enough to tell you.
And the scary thing is, all these experiments in manipulating thousands or millions of people's behaviour are being chosen entirely at random. The Internet is so huge and with such a lot of artificial intelligence now keeping it going that it's got to be pushing things one way or other, whatever happens, but nobody is designing whether the way it ends up pushing is going to be a good thing for humanity or not. It's just being programmed with whatever happens to be best for a particuar company's profits that day, and who knows what the effect of that thing times millions of people will happen to be?
I don't know if anyone thinks the same about this!
Blimey, and I thought I'd writtrn more than I intended to on 1)!

1. You've already listed them.
2. I'd try to create device that allows us to go to other worlds, dimensions, universes and planes of existence. The catch would be that only our soul/ghost can cross over while our body gets left behind. Then we get reborn as a new being with the knowledge of our past life. But we won't be able to chose were we want to be reborn and it can be done only once. Then, after living the new life we would cease to exist after dieing.
3. Technology becoming so advanced that machines won't need us anymore and get rid of us like in the movie Terminator...or they keep us as their power source like in The Matrix. But this time there is nobody who can save us from our fate.

3) What scares me the most is that we create artificial intelligence, and during research we forget that we need humanity to live as well and end up killing off our own species by creating AI's.

Actualll, all antibiotics have sabotaged is themselves - the bacteria (it's beacteria, not viruse, antiboiotics don't affect viruses) aren't really "stronger" in general, but they're antibiotic-proof. So at least the giong-wrong of antibiotics only leaves us back where we were before, which isn't as bad as SOME kinds of science failure could be!
... that's still pretty darn bad, though, and a lot closer to happening than some of the more exotic "nightmare scenarios". Rogue robots, genetic engineering disasters and the rest are things that haven't happened to any serious extent but might, but the death of effective antibioticvcs is ALREAFDY happening and will happen unless we really get our act together to stop it! I can't believe that some countries are still alowing farmers to give them to all their animals ll the time juset in case they happen to catch somethig!

1. Kind of a weird example, since it's more of a dystopian story than a fantasy or horror one, but the "Maze Runner" books. I just love them. Plus the "Blade Runner" movies are very great too! There is so much good stuff, like The Matrix, Star Threk, Killjoys, etc.
2. Phew, there are a lot of things to do like trying to extend or better use all the capability of the human brain, search for cures for diseases so we live longer (we are already overpopulating...but I don't know, this has two sides. I kinda always have the fear of not having enough time though, maybe not doing everything I want to do...ugh. But I don't want to say immortality (unless killed physically and yeah)...It somehow is cool, I want to see the stuff that is going to happen in the future, but also a damn curse after some time...), just in general get farther in medicine, exosuits and stuff, develop more enviroment friendly engines and all (like the artificial leaf and all), explore more of the universe/live on other plantes etc. There is just way too much to do and everything has it's consequences, we just have to face them. We always have.
3. Yeah, well there is so much too misuse, everything can turn out badly. For example exosuits being used the wrong way, for military purposes and stuff. I mean like really bad military purposes, if that's understandable. Or cloning and whatnot.
But these things don't really scare me in general, just misusing them badly is very dangerous...

1. A.I
The idea behind how one can theorize whether there are ghosts in a machine. The random bits of code being question for being truly random or a slither of free will being used. I take into consideration as machines and technology has a way of showing some form of character. From the office printer acting up to specific people to programming working in favor of its creator. Now a days one hears about A.I's being developed and adopting similar behavior patterns to worn machines before evolving to more advanced stated. In context with the film universe of technology, of course.
2. Not much comes to mind as my idea of changing machines may not improve a fellow individual. I'd like a way to invent a machine that can visualize thoughts. Creating works of art from a single idea. Be able to record dreams analyse mind patterns and in some cases create entire worlds. Not for the purpose of escaping to said world, to learn what the extend the mind can imagine.
3. Not understanding the unknown scare many people. I am no exception. Anything from what happens in the hacking world to what is developed in laboratories to change human anatomy and behavior. What scares me most is the change not in favor of the host but in favor of who is given most control.

4) By the way, all of the science stuff is great, but you cant forget, youre doing movies (enterteinment) not a documentary. Getting it right is not that difficult, i havent seen the film (not long ago i saw Dracula Untold), and i havent seen the universal monsters classics (i have seen some youtube reviews), but all you have to do to create a great film is to see it (before its made) from the publics perspective, and to think of yourselves as a kid watching a superhero film, when youre a kind and youre watch a superhero film, you play as a superhero you want to fly break down doors lift up cars, fight or even choose to be supervillians, same goes to dinosaur films or monsters, you never play as the people running away from the T-Rex, you play as the T-Rex. You do need a good story (the science stuff) so the movie wont become a brainless and boring action movie, always find a middleground.
Also, i was watching one of the frankistein reviews from the cinemassacre youtube channel (watching youtube reviews is the best i can do for now); He mentions that in one of the Universal/Hammer (i think) Dr.Frankistein wants to place his own brain in the monster, i think if you head in that direction (using ideas from the classic films) you can make the new films more meaty and resolve once and for all the "is it Dr.Frankistein or Frankistein the monster" issue. Saludos!

2) create or manipulate science/technology to better my life? I dont get that, you mean like to make life easier? Flying like Superman, teletransporting, bringing back the dead using diferent body parts? I doubt any of that would make my life easier, any one with that kind of power would instantly become a supervillain. Maybe i can create technology to change the tv channel without the remote control.

1) you cant have one favorite, maybe favorites...i dont know it think i love the campiness of the luchadores films, el Santo contra las momias de Guanajuato, one of my favorites, i saw it long ago but i do remember the laser guns, the sports cars full of gadets, they combine the science with the paranormal, those luchadores films are great.
