Take the case of the Mummy, an age-old concept of fear of the dead coming back to life. To the ancient Egyptians, mummification itself was a form of science rooted in their religious beliefs. While Universal put a fantastical new spin on this iteration seen in 2017’s the Mummy, it still kept true to the roots that scared theater goers of yesteryear—the walking dead powered by mysticism. But however powerful this mysticism, it gained control of biological science to reanimate this corpse and bring the Mummy back to life. Every creature, monster or character from the shadows of a nightmare can find its origin in the annals of Dark Science. Artwork by: lancerdrake Take a look behind the scenes on how The Mummy blended mysticism and science fiction in the creation of Dr. Jekyll’s lab - The Prodigium. Dr. Frankenstein's lab in Mary Shelley's 1819 novel was the birthplace of a new kind of science. In the book Mary Shelley uses Frankenstein's experiment as a way to explore the limitations of scientific progress, and to ask questions about the ethics of it. Specifically, can science resurrect the dead, and more to the point, should it? Generations of storytellers after Shelley would incorporate examples of science being used to dark, foreboding ends. Not least among them was the Robert Louis Stevenson character Dr. Jekyll, and his famously destructive alter-ego, Mr. Hyde. Dr. Jekyll's lab, housed in London's Museum of Natural History, also serves as a headquarters for a secret group dedicated to finding and neutralizing evil. It is called The Prodigium. In The Mummy, Dr. Jekyll has been transformed from merely being a scientist with a dark secret to an academic who specializes in evil "Mary Shelley... explore the limitations of scientific progress, and to ask questions about the ethics of it." and spends his life working to hunt it down. The Prodigium is the venue where Jekyll conducts his studies and stores artifacts. Having access to the resources of the museum allows him to perform in-depth research. Among the many curiosities seen inside the lab you'll find the skull of Dracula as well as The Creature From the Black Lagoon's arm. Studying such auspicious and dangerous creatures is far from what constitutes a routine scientific endeavor. Just like Dr. Frankenstein flipping the switch and electrifying his cadaver back to life, this is a different kind of science with its own set of dark consequences. Dark science is what happens when science goes too far. For Dr. Frankenstein, it meant inadvertently creating a monster. For historical characters in fiction like Dr. Faust, it meant making a deal with the devil in order to discern the secrets of the universe. The Prodigium ultimately may have a noble goal driving it, but that doesn't mean that it's safe, or that unintended consequences can't spring out of it. In looking for evidence of a long-lost species, the scientists in The Creature From the Black Lagoon incur the wrath of a mysterious menace. In Jules Verne's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea men use new technology to explore new depths and get more than they bargained for. In The War of the Worlds by H.G. Wells, a super advanced civilization from Mars attacks earth with metal walkers equipped with hi-tech weapons. Science has long provided a foundation for tales of monsters, evil forces, and other mortal perils. When Mary Shelley sat down to write Frankenstein, one of the ideological "Dark science originates from exploring the connection between scientific progress and the potential for danger."questions she wrestled with was the idea that although progress in society followed from knowledge—like diseases being cured, or transportation improving—there was no inherently good guiding principle underpinning that progress. In other words, technological advances could be used for evil just as easily as they could be used for good. Wells are considered among the founding authors of science fiction, the genre didn't exist as we know it when these writers were alive. These authors laid the groundwork for later science fiction storytellers, and they also founded a long trend of combining speculative, fictional science with Horror or Gothic storytelling. The common element that stories traversing these two genres almost always shared? Action, and plenty of it. It's only natural for conflict to arrive when weaponized machines start taking over cities, or when re-animated corpses begin terrorizing the living, but heroism and action-packed adventures also provided a solid underpinning for these kinds of stories, which manage to explore profound questions about society and progress while still providing a thoroughly entertaining experience. Sky is the only one I've ever played, actually. I sort of considered Super, but the reviews made it seem sort of childish and not up to the same standard.
Yep, it's called 3D origami. Basically, you make a bunch of smaller units, and put them together sort of like lego bricks. They can take hundreds or even thousands of pieces, so it's normally very time consuming... but I think it's worth it.

Probably. A lot of books I really like aren't that well-known, actually...
Truth be told, it kind of is. And they made a lot of changes to the gameplay that make it ridiculously hard to get through the game if you don't pick the right Pokemon. That, plus the fact that I'm way underleveled at a point where the story doesn't let me go back and train, is why I ended up quitting. I might try to finish it at some point, but it's not a high priority. You're better off playing Red or Blue, since those have a much better (if slightly simple and predictible, but they were the first PMD games) plot. Or if you want to replay the Explorers plot, pick up Time or Darkness since there was bonus content added to Sky that the others don't have. It might be fun to see what changed between them.

Ugh, that does sound awful. I think one of the best things about Pokemon games is that they aren't time specific. There's no rush. You can play with the mindset of "Oh no I must save the world from the evil Team-- oooh, is that a fun minigame? I'm gonna go waste hours of my time on it!" and there are no consequences. I might try Red and Blue someday, since I liked the Explorers so much, but I'm not sure I'd get that much out of Time or Darkness.

BEST QUALITIES: It used to be that the typical Halloween witch was simply a very old, human woman, but over time, she evolved into something clearly stranger than that, with a pond-scum complexion, elongated facial features and gnarled, knobbly joints. These qualities are by no means new, but hearken more to the oldest portrayals of figures like Baba Yaga and Jenny Greenteeth, mythical "hags" so ancient and so powerful that they're no longer human at all, if they ever truly were to begin with. I'll admit, I used to completely overlook witches as if they were the dullest of the Halloween mascots, but my appreciation for them has really skyrocketed in recent years.
FURTHER POTENTIAL: admittedly, even the gnarliest and weirdest looking Halloween witches are often still passed off as "just really old," sometimes even if they occupy a series where no other human being ever looks that peculiar. It's obvious, though, that breathing in the fumes of all those bubbling, magical brews must just carry a lot of creepy side effects. The green skin comes first. Then you've got the extremities growing a bit faster than the rest of you. Warts come next, and by the time a witch is living far beyond a normal human life expectancy, her body has begun to age in ways the natural human life span doesn't normally permit. Think of witches as "mutated" by their own magic - which they obviously are - and they suddenly seem a whole lot more compelling than just a bunch of very scary grandmas.
BEST QUALITIES: Like witches, mad scientists are often assumed to be completely human, just weird and old. Also like witches, however, they're portrayed with exaggerated, inhuman features just often enough that this sometimes simply can't be the case. Most commonly, a mad scientist has an enlarged head, implying a brain far larger and more powerful than that of a normal human. Do they pursue science because of this advanced mind, or is there something more at work?
FURTHER POTENTIAL: I really, really want to think of mad scientists as monsters themselves, and I don't see why I can't. There are all sorts of ways we could rationalize it; in many classic narratives, an otherwise normal researcher stumbles upon a chemical or even mathematical formula that somehow boosts their intelligence far beyond natural, human capacity, losing their grasp on conventional logic or morality and turning towards more twisted research. Isn't that just as much a transformation into a "monster" as any other? It's almost a mental lycanthropy, a mind turning into some other, inhuman thing under abnormal conditions and wreaking its own form of havoc on the countryside. A were-genius.

1. Original Aliens movie and I saw the Fly last year for the first time, that freaked me out a bit.

3: A.I. and robotics. Not in the vein of robots taking over the world, but in how we'd express ourselves through robotics. Nearly every example of robots are of them being used to do tasked that we find too difficult or too tasking or beneath us, so the robots are created. If robots are ever created, we'll be in a serious God-complex moment and serious consideration should be given to how we consider beings we create in our image.

Usually there is people that might make weapons but other than the obvious, I don't fear what potential misuse of science people can come up with. I mean fear itself along with many other emotions like love, is just a chemical reaction in the brain. If you overcome fear, then in MY interpretation you become fear itself. But nonsense out of the way, personally I wouldn't fear it, like I said. If others can make potentially deadly things from said science then I must be able to make something that would protect myself (and probably others) from their danger. Right?

i think dark science is awesome!! ive actually created a story where a scientist trys to create a human by herself but accidently mixes wheel bug DNA into it, creating a bug human hybrid. my stories called 'thirteen - the stolen cells'.
unfortunately, I'm not very good at writing stories sorry if its terrible (I don't blame anyone who thinks it is)
1. my favourite dark science things are: the fly, frankenstein, the blob, dr jekyll and mr hyde and re-animator
2. (ive actually created a story for this that im currently working on). i would create a world where each and every one of my imaginary characters would exist with each of them representing my emotions through the meanings and colours of their soul rocks (souls rocks came from a replica of my personality but split into each imanginary character), not knowing that i would also create these horrific beings nick named 'shadows' and bring the end to all humanity, killing them in the most brutal ways and leaving but an empty shell of what used to be a human, now turned into one of them, and me. the 'shadows' would try to bring their world into ours, which is called 'the echo void' (the echo void is a dark empty water and space like place. the sky is filled with white glowing squares and the ground looks like you are walking on water, but if you encounter a 'shadow', they'll drag you into the ground, where you will seace to exist) to try and capture and harness the power of the soul rocks from my imaginary characters and the where abouts of the last human alive
3. I'm not really sure about this one. I'm not really bothered about weapons or robots or stuff like that. I hate animal testing though, I guess that could be a misuse of science

Personally I hate the thought of resurrection.... I believe that when people die, regardless of the cause, and regardless of how untimely, there is a reason. I also believe that if you look carefully, sometimes good can come out if it. For example, losing my great grandmother was BRUTAL on everyone.... We were all emotional trainwrecks and we still miss her every day. But if it wasn't for the inheritance she left us, we would have lost our house a while ago. So even though losing someone is hard, you have to look at the bigger picture. Additionally, once they have died, they no longer BELONG to this world. Their souls have moved on and to bring them back is not only selfish, but almost cruel. Maybe that's why mummies and other undead "monsters" are so hostile.

- Yes, to become immortal, and one of the known consequences would be more related to 'vampirism' - but no. If I knew the consequence and could decide from there, then yes. If the consequence was a mystery, then no.
- Yes. Sending our planets universal physical address into space [through diagrams and signals] without knowing where it will end up or who would/could ever possibly intercept it. There's literally documentaries, unsolved mystery cases about people contacting regular human beings who murdered them or kidnapped them. Why should this situation be any different other than a bunch of individuals who believe we are the only science-progressed creatures in the universe or the individuals doing this having literally no fear of who would respond.

Well, here's my thoughts about such a topic like this Dark Science subject.
1. Prometheus mostly, along with with non-horror stories like such as Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (with the introduction of The Ghost Rider), and also Jurassic Park/Jurassic World (simply for the fact that they all have one thing in common, they all talk about the subject of a price being payed for those who wish to play "God").
2. To answer this question, I would have to say the utilization of transferring one's own conscience into another body that would serve as a replacement (mostly to finish some form of unfinished business), and I would probably do so, despite the fact that I will never again experience the pleasures of the flesh.
3. Well, one such misuse of science that would probably terrify me would be of genetic manipulation (namely the pollution/mutation of one's own body and mind), so, they would literally become the very things of which nightmares are made of.

This is both exciting and scary. I'm in love with the idea of dimensional travels, and the studies that go into it, but the dangers. What might happen as you pass through? What way can it effect the other world? What would happen if it went both ways?
