Learn how science fiction helps build better monsters in film, literature, and beyond!

Facebook Google+ Science Fiction in Horror and Fantasy Author: eawood Header artwork by: vladmrk When one thinks of creatures that lurk in the realms of horror and fantasy, an often overlooked detail is how science influences their creation and how action and adventure bring their narrative to life. Take the case of the Mummy, an age-old concept of fear of the dead coming back to life. To the ancient Egyptians, mummification itself was a form of science rooted in their religious beliefs. While Universal put a fantastical new spin on this iteration seen in 2017’s the Mummy, it still kept true to the roots that scared theater goers of yesteryear—the walking dead powered by mysticism. But however powerful this mysticism, it gained control of biological science to reanimate this corpse and bring the Mummy back to life. Every creature, monster or character from the shadows of a nightmare can find its origin in the annals of Dark Science. Artwork by: lancerdrake Take a look behind the scenes on how The Mummy blended mysticism and science fiction in the creation of Dr. Jekyll’s lab - The Prodigium. Dr. Frankenstein's lab in Mary Shelley's 1819 novel was the birthplace of a new kind of science. In the book Mary Shelley uses Frankenstein's experiment as a way to explore the limitations of scientific progress, and to ask questions about the ethics of it. Specifically, can science resurrect the dead, and more to the point, should it? Generations of storytellers after Shelley would incorporate examples of science being used to dark, foreboding ends. Not least among them was the Robert Louis Stevenson character Dr. Jekyll, and his famously destructive alter-ego, Mr. Hyde. Dr. Jekyll's lab, housed in London's Museum of Natural History, also serves as a headquarters for a secret group dedicated to finding and neutralizing evil. It is called The Prodigium. In The Mummy, Dr. Jekyll has been transformed from merely being a scientist with a dark secret to an academic who specializes in evil "Mary Shelley... explore the limitations of scientific progress, and to ask questions about the ethics of it." and spends his life working to hunt it down. The Prodigium is the venue where Jekyll conducts his studies and stores artifacts. Having access to the resources of the museum allows him to perform in-depth research. Among the many curiosities seen inside the lab you'll find the skull of Dracula as well as The Creature From the Black Lagoon's arm. Studying such auspicious and dangerous creatures is far from what constitutes a routine scientific endeavor. Just like Dr. Frankenstein flipping the switch and electrifying his cadaver back to life, this is a different kind of science with its own set of dark consequences. Dark science is what happens when science goes too far. For Dr. Frankenstein, it meant inadvertently creating a monster. For historical characters in fiction like Dr. Faust, it meant making a deal with the devil in order to discern the secrets of the universe. The Prodigium ultimately may have a noble goal driving it, but that doesn't mean that it's safe, or that unintended consequences can't spring out of it. Artwork by: Valzonline Creature from the black lagoon ogilvie The idea of dark science originates from exploring the connection between scientific progress and the potential for danger. By trying to break the barrier between life and death, Dr. Frankenstein creates a monster. In looking for evidence of a long-lost species, the scientists in The Creature From the Black Lagoon incur the wrath of a mysterious menace. In Jules Verne's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea men use new technology to explore new depths and get more than they bargained for. In The War of the Worlds by H.G. Wells, a super advanced civilization from Mars attacks earth with metal walkers equipped with hi-tech weapons. Science has long provided a foundation for tales of monsters, evil forces, and other mortal perils. When Mary Shelley sat down to write Frankenstein, one of the ideological "Dark science originates from exploring the connection between scientific progress and the potential for danger."questions she wrestled with was the idea that although progress in society followed from knowledge—like diseases being cured, or transportation improving—there was no inherently good guiding principle underpinning that progress. In other words, technological advances could be used for evil just as easily as they could be used for good. That truth opened up all kinds of possibilities, especially for storytellers looking to tell harrowing tales. Many of the most recognizable horror stories and thriller titles of all time—Frankenstein, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, War of the Worlds, and The Creature From the Black Lagoon among them—deal with man's pursuit of knowledge leading to terrifying outcomes, or show how technological progress can have deadly consequences. Artwork by: AshleyCope Although Mary Shelley, Jules Verne, and H.G. Wells are considered among the founding authors of science fiction, the genre didn't exist as we know it when these writers were alive. These authors laid the groundwork for later science fiction storytellers, and they also founded a long trend of combining speculative, fictional science with Horror or Gothic storytelling. The common element that stories traversing these two genres almost always shared? Action, and plenty of it. It's only natural for conflict to arrive when weaponized machines start taking over cities, or when re-animated corpses begin terrorizing the living, but heroism and action-packed adventures also provided a solid underpinning for these kinds of stories, which manage to explore profound questions about society and progress while still providing a thoroughly entertaining experience. "It's only natural for conflict to arrive when weaponized machines start taking over cities"Dr. Jekyll is perhaps the perfect embodiment of this kind of blending. His work requires putting himself in harm's way, but it also requires the strong mental faculties of science. And the fact that he has a violent alter-ego ensures that chaos and action will follow wherever he goes. Dr. Jekyll's future path of horror, science fiction, and action will definitely be worth keeping an eye on. 1- Alien, the first one, is a true masterpiece!
2- Make robots, just like in that anime Chobits. I always dream about having one. But time travel is also cool, but with more technology to protect me and for make capable to me to survive in times when the air was toxic, etc. I have a lot of ideas actually.
3- Well, weapons. Nuclear, biological... They all creep me out! But, you know, AI also are really dangerous... And I heard of cientists that create a black hole for some seconds (and even if that's fake, I know that this is something some crazy one can try to do). You guys... A BLACK HOLE? This is dangerous even for our GALAXY.

1: I like the first movie Poltergeist ^^ the way the Poltergeist uses the television to kidnap the little girl was kinda scary.
2: I would build a machine, that could make the perfect humanoid. it should be so the creator could choose every thing from hair color to personality. other than that I would properly make an army of robots or human droids.
3: the thought of a nuclear war, that will destroy most of the world and afterwards will make a nuclear winter. so kinda like the fall out games.

2. Time Travel
3. Inventions that can bring about extinction
But in my opinion the recent Mummy movie failed in a horror aspect, there needs to be more subtlety and patience instead of jumpscares and natural disasters, key basics in making good horror and a story in general. Not even the design of the mummy was scary, part of what made me fear the original series Mummy was how decomposed and raggedy he looked.
Scratch that the mummy then was never that scary
STILL there was a chance to make it scary with new ideas, but now we're stuck with a less creepy enchantress in bandages

Dracula Untold was awesome, it also wasn't very good at instilling horror but considering the theme of vampires in the west it was still thrilling enough and had a better lead monster than the Mummy, the story and atmosphere was also very solid, something else the mummy failed at since they focused too much on teasing the bigger universe and ignored the current plot.
Goddammit directors, learn some subtlety and patience! That is the core of horror!
THIS was why Kong Skull Island, Worked!
they focused on making just the present movie!

goes to show how money oriented this project is, they wanna make a horror movie universe and yet shy away from the horror so much they might as well be doing super heroes so all ages can see the mess...

First off they should do things slower, remember to make the movie as one movie before adding in continuing aspects near the end and increase that as the thing progresses. The Mummy fails in this regard amazingly, every chance they get they hammer in the secret organization thing when they could have made this more contained and then introduce this organization at the end. It takes too much focus away from the lead monster.
Story wise they could make the starting monsters, Dracula and the Mummy, more in line with the older universal movies they were originated from as well as add some new aspects, make it like the new Godzilla as a way of celebrating them as an idea by paying homage to the previous works, that will set a good base for the character and sense of history.
Dracula Untold was done quite well, but it doesn't acknowledge enough from the source material, just taking from the backstory that he was a soldier and left out the somewhat classy, somewhat creepy, evil gentlemen until the very end of the movie where it was teased, but they did succeed in the character design and the actor Luke Evans definitely captures the look of Dracula which is deceptively difficult to nail.
But this is even less so for the mummy, the only same thing about the new and the old was that they are magical dead people, it actually took more from the Mummy movies with Brendan Fraser which already had a lot of faults. Design wise they should've done more, the unnatural eyes and markings were nice but in the end she doesn't look like a corpse fueled by evil energies but more like a zombie or voodoo priestess, which she was but as a mummy she should have this power etched into the design, if they want to keep the face maybe just make her look and act deader. Another thing is the actor, she's good but doesn't look that menacing... think it would be better to have a slightly taller and leaner built person, as those are often associated with the mummy and creepy but imposing characters in general.
Which brings us to subtlety, the important aspect many overlook in horror even if its made for a wide audience, Untold like I said worked better because it had some eerie parts when vampirism is addressed by the movie, like when he talks with the original vampire in that dark cave with human remains, not much happens but the feeling of discomfort and fear is there. And for the first part The Mummy did the same and was quite good, the backstory was indeed chilling and slightly horrifying, but then it falls apart when she comes back. Dracula has always been an individual evil like a demon in the form of man so him doing things physically has been a staple of the character, but the mummy is an ancient horror and so making her more like a super strength human like Dracula that does things on his own, severely limits this aspect. In my opinion they could've made her more ghostlike and in the shadows, like an image that appears to the main character in a more refined manner and then going more physical in the final acts when she's been returned to power, releasing the more plague and disaster powers in all their might.
Character wise, Untold again can be let off more because this origin involves the character of Vlad to grow into the monster he will be known as, the only thing wrong is they don't show this aspect strong enough by the course of the movie and at its ending, hundreds of years later he is still much the same good person he was, the effect of time is not implemented enough, give him a more grimmer and distant personality perhaps if you still want to keep him young.
With the Mummy, there wasn't that much to begin with in motives and that is the point, the initial monster just wanted to get his love back at the expense of a sacrifice that goes against the main characters, it wasn't "I want to rule the world" but rather "I will tear through you to get to my love" a motive which anyone can sympathize with, and if they want something bigger, amp up the extremes the monster character will go to or maybe disrupt the final process and get them grieving and deciding to take revenge, building on that motive 2 with a slight motive 1 and maybe end it by her being sealed away but still angry until her return.
But the the largest flaw with the monsters are they aren't very monsterous, part of the charm of these classic characters is how evil they can get but still be somewhat relatable and tragic, but the makers of these new movies seem to either make them too good a person or even cartoonish villain, do a cause and effect sort of thing, like I said Dracula Untold did begin that but by the end they didn't do much, maybe have some more time to dwell on this, like say the last thing that made him good was his son, have the son die of old age and be the last thing that represents his human life gone, make him a total recluse in a castle in Transylvania and by the end you get the complete origin of the original Dracula and a motive for him to want to invade England to make a place he can call home with a people to belong to just like his old life, and then the road from hero to villain is natural.
For the mummy things are different (other than from the movie standpoint her characterization is very minimal) in this story the monster is a human who willingly becomes a monster and so the humanity will be gone from the start, I would have her act more like that instead of running around doing things manually and crying out in pain or anger and stuff, keep that to a minimum and you get the more ancient horror sort of character that just does its job indifferently because its important business to her.
Maybe this love driven story from a female to a male might not sit well with this generation... ah fuck it people can stand a bit of classic story and if you love someone you would care enough to do things right? I stand by this idea... girl loves guy who died and so she tries to get him back, when this is denied she unleashes all hell in revenge.
So I say in this genre the devil is literally in the details, they really could've done better.
Now excuse me while I take a crack at designing the classic monsters for myself, it is a very enjoyable notion to honor the ideas of the creators...

1. Favourite science fiction is the Back to The Future movie triology. Loved it as a kid loved it as a teenager and love it as an adult. There isn't much like that nowadays. Things hardly compete with it's greatness. The other science fiction i'm an appreciator of recently it The Expanse series. I love how they handle true newtonian physics.
2. I would say science isn't something which you can create or manipulate. Science is about discoveries and stories, not about objects and things which you can hold in your hand. Unlike technology whih you can literaly hold in your hand or put in your pocket. Technology is something which should always serve the greater good. People should invent things which make life easier and help prosperity. I wouldn't manipulate that aspect, not in my right mind. However there are many examples for people using technology for the opposite of what i just said, which brings me to my last point.
3. The hydrogen bomb is the prime example of the stupidity naivity and straight up disgusting nature of common human intervention to the world of science and technology. It's not science which scares me. It's the human stupidity which terrifies me down to the bone.

My answers are.)
1.) Ender's Game fascinated me as a child, i would have both hated and loved to be in Ender's shoes, being tricked the way he was would suck, but being able to help humanity in such a way, it'd be cool. Although this isn't really dark sci-fi, I've never really read horror books, so uh, Stranger Things would be okay for this question, right? I haven't watched all the episodes of season 1 yet (don't hurt me) but it seems to be both magical and science-y at times.
2.) I wouldn't manipulate it to save my own life, I'd manipulate it to save people who are sick.
Or at least I'd like to think, i have no idea what I would really do.
3.) The misuse of life-saving tech scares me, I don't wanna die just because you've messed up whilst playing around with something that was never a toy in the first place!

The definiton of science and engineering may overlap a bit but i would still say the difference between the two is like the difference between a child and his/her legacy. It may be built upon it but it's something different. The whole is greater than the some of it's parts. But the foundation is just as great as the building.

There are a lot that I like, but my most favorite would have to be from the original black and white movie Young Frankenstien. I grew up watching that and I loved it. It was either that or TMNT.

I don't plan on watching the new version of The Mummy even though it looks just as good as the original with Brendon Fraser (1999) The Mummy was the one that I grew up with & loved over the passed years.
Anyways my favorite Horror/Science/Fantasy books & movies are...
1. Interview With the Vampire by Anne Rice
2. Bram Stokers: Dracula
3. The Last Unicorn by Peter S. Biegle- Even though there's only a few Horror scenes in it such as Momma Fortuna getting eatin' by her HagRaven that she captured for her Monster Show was the most traumatizing scene in the book compared to the others.
4. The Bat with/ Vincent Price & his other Horror Movie collections
5. Tales From the Crypt
6. Dr. Jekyll & Mister Hyde
I would add my entire list but I don't want to bore people. If I we're to draw one of these for Halloween each year it would mostly be Interview With the Vampire since I read that book so many times & never got bored of it.
(As far as Science goes for Vampires)
Everyone wants to live forever right? I would find a way to use a Vampires blood cells to find a way to cure all diseases & cancers/tumors (etc) for a longer healthier life span than what we have. That way we won't have to spend Millions of dollars on Health Care expenses.
