Science Fiction in Horror and Fantasy

When one thinks of creatures that lurk in the realms of horror and fantasy, an often overlooked detail is how science influences their creation and how action and adventure bring their narrative to life.

Take the case of the Mummy, an age-old concept of fear of the dead coming back to life. To the ancient Egyptians, mummification itself was a form of science rooted in their religious beliefs. While Universal put a fantastical new spin on this iteration seen in 2017’s the Mummy, it still kept true to the roots that scared theater goers of yesteryear—the walking dead powered by mysticism. But however powerful this mysticism, it gained control of biological science to reanimate this corpse and bring the Mummy back to life. Every creature, monster or character from the shadows of a nightmare can find its origin in the annals of Dark Science.

Take a look behind the scenes on how The Mummy blended mysticism and science fiction in the creation of Dr. Jekyll’s lab - The Prodigium.

Dr. Frankenstein's lab in Mary Shelley's 1819 novel was the birthplace of a new kind of science. In the book Mary Shelley uses Frankenstein's experiment as a way to explore the limitations of scientific progress, and to ask questions about the ethics of it.

Specifically, can science resurrect the dead, and more to the point, should it? Generations of storytellers after Shelley would incorporate examples of science being used to dark, foreboding ends. Not least among them was the Robert Louis Stevenson character Dr. Jekyll, and his famously destructive alter-ego, Mr. Hyde.

Dr. Jekyll's lab, housed in London's Museum of Natural History, also serves as a headquarters for a secret group dedicated to finding and neutralizing evil. It is called The Prodigium. In The Mummy, Dr. Jekyll has been transformed from merely being a scientist with a dark secret to an academic who specializes in evil "Mary Shelley... explore the limitations of scientific progress, and to ask questions about the ethics of it." and spends his life working to hunt it down. The Prodigium is the venue where Jekyll conducts his studies and stores artifacts. Having access to the resources of the museum allows him to perform in-depth research. Among the many curiosities seen inside the lab you'll find the skull of Dracula as well as The Creature From the Black Lagoon's arm.

Studying such auspicious and dangerous creatures is far from what constitutes a routine scientific endeavor. Just like Dr. Frankenstein flipping the switch and electrifying his cadaver back to life, this is a different kind of science with its own set of dark consequences. Dark science is what happens when science goes too far. For Dr. Frankenstein, it meant inadvertently creating a monster. For historical characters in fiction like Dr. Faust, it meant making a deal with the devil in order to discern the secrets of the universe. The Prodigium ultimately may have a noble goal driving it, but that doesn't mean that it's safe, or that unintended consequences can't spring out of it.

The idea of dark science originates from exploring the connection between scientific progress and the potential for danger. By trying to break the barrier between life and death, Dr. Frankenstein creates a monster. In looking for evidence of a long-lost species, the scientists in The Creature From the Black Lagoon incur the wrath of a mysterious menace. In Jules Verne's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea men use new technology to explore new depths and get more than they bargained for. In The War of the Worlds by H.G. Wells, a super advanced civilization from Mars attacks earth with metal walkers equipped with hi-tech weapons. Science has long provided a foundation for tales of monsters, evil forces, and other mortal perils. When Mary Shelley sat down to write Frankenstein, one of the ideological "Dark science originates from exploring the connection between scientific progress and the potential for danger."questions she wrestled with was the idea that although progress in society followed from knowledge—like diseases being cured, or transportation improving—there was no inherently good guiding principle underpinning that progress. In other words, technological advances could be used for evil just as easily as they could be used for good. That truth opened up all kinds of possibilities, especially for storytellers looking to tell harrowing tales. Many of the most recognizable horror stories and thriller titles of all time—Frankenstein, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, War of the Worlds, and The Creature From the Black Lagoon among them—deal with man's pursuit of knowledge leading to terrifying outcomes, or show how technological progress can have deadly consequences.

Although Mary Shelley, Jules Verne, and H.G. Wells are considered among the founding authors of science fiction, the genre didn't exist as we know it when these writers were alive. These authors laid the groundwork for later science fiction storytellers, and they also founded a long trend of combining speculative, fictional science with Horror or Gothic storytelling. The common element that stories traversing these two genres almost always shared? Action, and plenty of it. It's only natural for conflict to arrive when weaponized machines start taking over cities, or when re-animated corpses begin terrorizing the living, but heroism and action-packed adventures also provided a solid underpinning for these kinds of stories, which manage to explore profound questions about society and progress while still providing a thoroughly entertaining experience. "It's only natural for conflict to arrive when weaponized machines start taking over cities"Dr. Jekyll is perhaps the perfect embodiment of this kind of blending. His work requires putting himself in harm's way, but it also requires the strong mental faculties of science. And the fact that he has a violent alter-ego ensures that chaos and action will follow wherever he goes. Dr. Jekyll's future path of horror, science fiction, and action will definitely be worth keeping an eye on.

1. What is your favorite example of a science fiction influence in a horror or fantasy story (movies, TV, books, comics, etc.)?
I've seen too many great stories to pick one favorite but I must mention Alien, Predator and It. Alien is a great blend of horror and scifi, it still makes me cringe. Predator, while more inclined to action, it doesn't lack in thrilling moments and the whole concept of a race of technologically advanced hunters coming down to Earth to make trophies out of the strongest humans is a very unsettling concept. And lastly It, as a kid I was so scared of this flick I couldn't stand to watch it even in a crowded room in daytime. 

2. If you could create or manipulate science/technology to better your life, what would you do, and would you do it regardless of the consequences?
I read sometime last year about some experimental belt that can feed the wearer by releasing nutritive nano-pills directly into the bloodstream. That could make my life a lot easier, no more worrying about nutrition charts and toxics in the food. Not to mention the money factor, assuming it's more convenient on the long term than normal food. However, I would not use it regardless of the consequences. Since I would want to use that with the interest of simplifying and improving my nutrition, it would be contradictory for me not to weight the benefits and consequences of using this gadget beforehand.

3. Is there an example of a potential misuse of science that scares you?
Everything related to medical sciences and technology in the workplace and household can be easily misused I don't think society at large thinks enough on this matter before quickly adopting whatever gadget or medication is offered up to them.

1) Classic Frankenstein. 

2) If possible, I would manipulate it for the cardiac system, since most people in my family suffer from it. 
Of course I don't possible mind loosing my head> over it.

3) Genetic modification/Mutation. Funny coming from someone who has a genetic mutation. I guess it's the
morbid fear of it going too far, causing something like the X-Men to happen, it'd be cool for awhile, but, even more
dark science will happen.

I go more to the fantasy side, the perfect example of science and alchemy in most of the manga series I follow, thing can go wrong, but we need to take risk to evolve am I right?

I would probably start a humanoid project. I don't want to make robots with human thought but el contrare, I want to evolve the human race, make us leave longer and better, of course, someone will need to die, but hey... we need to make the test even if the consequences could take someone life.

SOMA by Frictional Games is easily my favourite science fiction horror story. I absolutely adore how perfectly the game shows you both bright and dark side of the science. How the science can save us even on the moment of total apocalypse, but also destroys us when it's been taken too far.

I would definitely figure out a way to help us memorialize things. Being able to save memories and having a photographic memory would be really useful on almost any field, for example for both scientists and artists alike. Having those memories digitalized would also be a huge improvement. For example, t would be interesting to save and then even upload your dreams on a computer for later use (let's say, you had really inspiring dream and now you don't need to be afraid of losing it, you can come back to it any time you need).
Also transhumanism in general truly fascinates me. Taking it further, being able to replace and restore more body parts and saving lives with it is something to really strive for.

2) My life only? I'd say again time travel because it's so fucking awesome or being a Jedi. Full package of Force and two lightsabers (black and white)
3) Honestly, it'd be resurrection or perfect cloning. Resurrection because some people are just a wee bit off their rocker and might revive the uncatchable, unstoppable psychopaths. Perfect cloning, like the clone has memories of the original, is very very disturbing for the same reason.

    Although it hasn't come out yet, I'm simply in love with Del Toro's take on the Creature from The Black Lagoon. The Shape of The Water is sure to be a masterpiece, and I'm excited to see the fish man. :3

1.)  Anne McCaffery is one of the main influences on my writing and her dragons also were a huge influence on my own.  Mine can be fierce, but generally they are peaceable.

2.) My ideas for what science should be used for is for the benefit for all life on Earth.  The misuse of science has already created a lot of problems, but with the right focus, it can solve a lot of problems too.  Science should never ever be used to develop more weapons.  That is an evil that can be avoided and should be.  If could actually do anything useful, I would always do my best to consider the consequences.

3.)  Anything that creates weapons.  Nobody needs that.  If the people world over would take as much effort into fixing problems peacefully as they do in warfare, a lot of problems could be solved over time.

    I like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and Doctor Who has always been one of my favourite TV shows. As for books, I really like the Skulduggery Pleasant series, which mainly consists of magic, but also has it's horror counterparts.

1. Certainly "Alien" 'cause fear of what's can be found in the unknown seems like one of the oldest fears in human history. (But some ppl picked pretty nice examples of how those genres mix in sth amazing)
2. Sth that would take us on safe and fast trips through space and it's oddities.
3. Was thinkin' about nuclear weapons and neutron bombs but I suppose what scares me the most is what we achieved in matter of psychology and manipulation.

  • I'd have to say one of my favorites is Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde as there is a duality in the part that is dark and destructive and the part that is noble and constructive.
  • I would like to see a system that mitigates disease and ultimately make it non-existent; think along the lines of a nanobots whose sole purpose is to detect and repair biological anomalies, genetic mutations, and viral diseases which would theoretically make all diseases moot (cancer, immunodeficiency, Alzheimer's, Parkinson, etc), genetic mutations (that result in physical deformities, loss of site/hearing, down syndrome, cerebral palsy, etc) and effectively correcting problems with the human genome that will eventually be passed down in healthy form effectively removing it over time.
  • There is always potential for abuse of ANY technology, hard to argue against progress because some may abuse it. However, there is always a fear that something benevolent can be twisted into a weapon and in the hands of a less than ethical character, become a nightmare. Even in my example above, it can be used by a racist to restart Nazi era eugenics, or for governments to assassinate or suppress anyone they don't like, or a plethora of other possibilities even as remote as they becoming sentient and deciding we are not worth fixing and taking over our bodies.

    I would have to say the whole idea of Transhumanisim. To be human but machine as well. The idea that there is the potential to live forever by mechanical means replacing parts as they wear out.  My fave example would have to be Borg from StarTreck on that topic.

    I would develop a cybernetic chassis and means of keeping my brain alive forever..of course with a failsafe..the idea of living forever seems cool now but in 500 years I'd maybe be sick of living?     Oh yeah, that was intended to be the first of the Dark Universe, but changed their minds at the last minute. I personally thought the film wasn't that bad, not great but not awfully terrible.
