Description
mother and daughterfrom Disney's Tangled
I'm fascinated by Mother Gothel.
Even if she loved only to control Rapunzel, I want to believe she was surely mother.
I think Mother knows best reprise is the best song in this movie. So cool

She always reminds me of my mother, because she has curly black hair too (actually dark brown, but almost black).

Mother gothel and rapunzel look suspiciously like my mother and me
And rapunzel was my favourite fairytale as a child...

I love Mother Gothel, too! She's the best villain. Mother knows best!
Of course none of this will justify her actions.

her intentions were not pure, but you have to admit mother Gothel gave Rapunzel so much love during all her life!! She didn´t have to, how many step mothers just don´t show love to the children? but mother Gothel did, and for that, Rapunzel loved her so much! and all through the movie, Rapunzel was filled with caresses and considerations (she noticed the hidden motifs until the very end of the story, so she was, practically, a happy girl all her life, thanks to mother G, right?)

It was probably so that Rapunzel wouldn't want to leave, if you were treated badly you'd want to get away more (Rapunzel only wanted to leave at first because of the lights and being curious, but didn't want to get away from mother Gothel) but it is better that she treated her good rather than bad.

well, there are a lot of children mistreated that never leave, so no, mother Gothel didn´t HAVE TO treat her badly to make her stay. I think, in her own, weird and twisted way, she cared for Rapunzel.

True, I guess she just didn't have a completely black heart. There was a small spark of love in there, just not one big enough for her to get over her selfish reasons for keeping Rapunzel close.

I love this picture...I think the ending of tangled lost the fact that there was some motherly bond between them, blood relations/magical hair or no blood relations/magical hair

I agree. I really want to believe that Mother Gothel truly did love Rapunzel apart from the whole flower thing and Rapunzel the same thinking of Gothel as a true mother. Plus, when Gothel falls, Rapunzel reaches out her ams as if to grab her or stop her. This is a really adorable picture.

I totally agree, they made the character pretty awesome... It's rare to see a Disney villian be...well..not only naturally evil..
she had some sort of love for Rapunzel, or more for the Flower-reincarnation in her..but it's actually a pretty complex situation...

If it makes you feel better, the REAL witch from the real Rapunzel story was actually way over protective of Rapunzel, and not because of her hair. I use to love this story when I was little--long before the movie came out. I loved it so much that--in the 90's--at my 1st grade costume parade, I requested my mother make me a Rapunzel costume.
Here's how the original story went. When Rapunzel's parents were expecting her, her mother had food cravings and her father would sneak into the witch's garden and steal from the witch. One day, he was caught stealing the plant called "rapunzel." I forget some of the details, but ultimately the price is that since the witch wanted a child and could not have one, the couple had to give up their child to her. The baby was named "Rapunzel" because that was what the father had been stealing when he was caught.
As the girl grew up, she became very beautiful and had amazingly long, beautiful hair. The witch, seeing how beautiful she was now becoming and afraid that someone would someday take her away, hid her up in a tall tower where no one could see her. The girl's hair was so long that she climbed it like rope to reach her. One day, however, a prince discovered Rapunzel and the two fell in love. When the witch found out, she cut off Rapunzel's hair so no one could climb up without her knowing. When the prince next came, it was a trap. The witch blinded him. It was Rapunzel's tears that cured his blindness, and she was carried off by the prince to his castle to become his bride.
So...the original witch to me always sounded like a lonely, crazy, and really overprotective mother, if you think about it. But the Disney spin on the story is interesting, too. I like both versions, to be honest.

Her death upset me..She still could have gotten up and caught her. I have am own AU two really.
1) Still dies, but Rap does more then, just reaching out. That was so hmm! >_
2) (think of this playing like real scene...)SHE DOES get her..and she put in jail, and on trail...but Rap seeks in to jail. Biting on her bottom lip, as she reaches for bars holding them tightly A few mins of dead time, she just holding the bars, and you hear her breathing. She soon breaks silence by saying "...You have controlled me my whole life." pulling away from the bars, herself all pathetically, looking down at the floor. "But..You never actually hurt me.." shrugs, and does her nervous/unsure head sway back and forth, holding herself, recalling everything all event that were tender, and loving from the past. "..But you were all I knew, I was taught to beileve you as my mother, and can't stop believing that." Lifts eyes to a haggy Gothel, casted in shadow, by lightly cast in moonlight from one cell window "..Not even know..after everything..." Zoom up on Gothel, eyes (some more sobby instrumental music box version of Mother knows best) Then jumps back to a a in profile rap, who frees herself from her own tight embrace, slowly and does a quick nod. Where she reviles a key to Gothel, and you see her eyes again starting form tears, as you hear cell clicking open, and you see close up of her head in frame, and long shot of her rap opening the cell. "....I.. Shouldn't " Gothel gets up, before she can finish and cups her mouth all,. "Shhhh...shhh..there comes a time when a mother has to let her daughter go...As a daughter has let her mother go..." Rap tears start to flow, as you see fall down her cheeks, down to gothel hands.
Then with a cute cafty writing its like reprise scene of ending of mother know best. (only add creaking voices, because of their tears and sobs)
"Rapunzel..?"
Pulls her hand away, as she looks up. "..Promise me, you will never come looking for me..."
She weakly nods. "...I will miss you..."
" I will miss you, the most" kisses her head...
When you hear a jail doors rattle main ones, and their fairwell is cut short...as she runs off into the night

You know, seeing "Tangled" again recently, I noticed something that kind of stuck with me...
As evil and heartless as she was, as selfish and uncaring as Rapunzel learned she had to be, even after she had stabbed Eugene and revealed her true nature and she turned on her and said she'd spend the rest of her life trying to get away from her and that she'd never let her use her hair again...
After all that...when Gothel fell out the window as she was dying...Rapunzel's arms still reached for her. Just something I thought about...

I really think that she thought she loved Rapunzel and as such did treat her as a daughter. It's like how we want to think people are either evil or good when in reality they're always a mixture of both. I think that's why disney did such a good job eliciting our empathy for her. We want to like mother gothel and hope that she changes in the end. However, her nature sadly overcomes her. I'm sure that Rapunzel mourned her "mother" regardless of the fact that she finds her biological parents to fill that void.

The colours and expressions are beautiful. I love the overall feel of this work.
Looking at how Rapunzel grew up to be; loving, kind-hearted, outgoing and eager to meet new people, Grothel had to have done something right with being a mother. Even if her reasons were selfish, she raised Rapunzel well (although, disturbingly naïve).

Haha, awesome drawing. Almost painfully sweet in a "could-have-been" way.
I found the Rapunzel/Gothel relationship one of the most interesting Disney hero-villian relationships. It never really was terribly clear-cut whether Gothel actually didn't care at all for Rapunzel, unlike most other Disney villians who clearly absolutely cared nothing for the heroes of the movie.

Really? Because she wasn't controlling Rapuzel for Rapunzel's own good. She was abusing a child (that she stole) so that she (Gothel) could stay young and beautiful.... What's motherly about that?

After she stole her away, the animator made Gothel have such motherly expressions to Rapunzel, that it made me thought; oh, maybe she changed...maybe she began to love her as a daughter? And then, BAM.

Gothel reminds me so much my stepfather - when I first watched Tangled, I was creeped because the "jokes" Gothel did about Rapunzel being unsure, clumsy, etc, were very like many things he used to say to me. And yet, I put up with these things because he made me feel it was my fault the way he treated me - and also cause I knew that deep down he truly cared about me. (and later, took me a few years talking to different psychologists so I would break free from years of unsureness and self-loathing caused by him... while Rapunzel just took a few hours )
So I really felt angry - and irritated about her behaviour - yet, rewatching the movie later I couldn´t help but thinking that she also brought all these things so Rapunzel could paint, play and have fun inside of the tower. Of course it was to distract the girl from thinking about going outside... but yet, none of the rest of Disney villains would have bothered themselves to do that, if you´ll think of Frollo, or Cinderella´s stepmother. The scene where Gothel sees Maximus and freaks out fearing that the palace guards could have found Rapunzel, made me wonder if she was only worried about loosing her source of youth or also worried about her "daughters´ " welfare.
Gothel and Rapunzel´s relationship also reminds me Regina and Henry (Once Upon a Time) a little, since Regina wanted to kill even the ones Henry loved to keep him to herself. Some people were suggesting that Gothel should take part of OUAT cast, as new villainess, and I think it would be a great idea.
