Description
Of the many organizations within the Free Colonies, there is one that doesn't quite fit the mantle of pirate or mercenary, rather something in between. The Arutian Syndicate, formerly a military of a planet Arute, they soon turned to a rogue agency after their homeworld was taken by an enemy force shortly before the first Xeno-Terran war. Their vow originally was to reclaim their homeworld and reinstate their government, but after the capital world was occupied by the Empire, and subsequently destroyed by the Staevik Republic, the Arutian Syndicate had now nothing to return to and no purpose.Throughout the remainder of the first Xeno-Terran War, the Syndicate sat quietly on the sidelines. Much of it disbanded, as ship commanders lost their will to continue a fight that was ended with the loss of their homeworld. But at the end of the war, the black markets flourished. Mobs, mafias, cartels, pirates, smugglers, and scavengers all began to hit a large market with the power vacuum. An opportunity was seen, and the Syndicate took it.
Technically a Mercenary fleet, they really answer to shady corporate enterprises, drug cartels, smugglers, and mobs. Whoever pays them the most gets their attention, and if you hire them, but the enemy offers a bigger check, they'd stab you in the back in a heartbeat. Only those who can afford their loyalty bother to hire them, and because of it, they've been able to keep their gear and vessels relatively well maintained and updated than some of their counterparts.
Rebuilding the fleet and training a small army, the Syndicate has enough posts and blood money to keep their operation running for a long time. And as long as Drug cartels need escort ships, the black market needs enforcers, and desperate, stupid, or wealthy nations or corporations need something done without being involved; the Syndicate will continue to thrive.
The syndicate aligns itself with rogue elements loosely, just enough so that they do not directly get roped in with pirates by pissed off nations with a grudge.

Nice motheaten cape he got there. He looks like a robot, the helmet mostly also the fangs on boots there are pretty savage.

Capes, though completely unreasonable, I find really asthetically pleasing
Those boots are good for stomping
