Is Kohuru like the shadow variant of Kuruga? they both look quite similar.

Yeah preatty much. Kohoru is another Kumatoran, his mask is the same of Kuruga when they were matoran, but instead of the other toa, Kohoru was evolved by a dark energy, so he has become the toa of shadow.
He isn't so good like the others, he's like an anti-hero, the nature of his powers pushes him to fight against everyone, because of this he prefer to stay alone
