Description
Well, this has been a long time coming, but after dipping my toes in there with the AtLA crossover pic, it's my first full-blown piece of "How To Train Your Dragon" fanart! The concept might not be immediately obvious, so in case you don't get it, allow me to explain. On the left side, we have Hiccup and Toothless as they appear in the original young adult novel by Cressida Cowell. On the right, we have those same characters as they appear in the recent animated movie.
Book!Hiccup's design is taken from concept art drawn up at a time when the "How to..." movie was planned to stick closer to the original book, though his straw basket and helmet are straight out of the illustrations from Cowell's book. You can see the design in question at various points in this YouTube vid, most notably 0:34 seconds in. [link]
Book!Toothless, meanwhile, is taken straight out of the Cowell book, with coloring provided by a small image I found on an HTTYD wiki: [link]
This image was a LOT of fun to make, and it definitely served as an excellent step forward for my new Goauche coloring technique. Hope you all like.

XDDD Definitely check it out, but just be prepared: the story's VERY different from the Movie.
And thank you; charm is definitely one of HTTYD's strong suits in both forms, and I had hoped to capture that here. ^_^

I haven't read the books, so I must admit some kind of preference for the movie one simply because I KNOW them. (and come on. A dragon designed by Chris Sanders? )

I only just read the original Book, and even then I started the pic well before then; even afterwards, I think I slightly prefer the Movie, but they're both very sweet. ^_^
And yes. Sanders has a great touch with design, and his Toothless is no exception. ^_^

First of all, I really like this new coloring style you've been experimenting with. It has a pleasantly loose feel without losing detail, and I think it's well suited to your linework.
Second, SQUEE! I love the idea of these four meeting! They all look adorable - and book!Toothless looks hilariously certain he can take on movie!Toothless, as is proper for him. 83 I love all the detailing in hair and scales, and the almost mirrored posing of the two dragons looks really good. ^.^ Fantastic.

First, thanks. As I've said, this is an important step forward for me, and I absolutely intend to continue working to improve it. ^_^
Second, I did indeed try to parallel the two poses, in more ways than one. Movie!Toothless' gummy smile is one of the most iconic images from the film, so I wanted him to use it here, and Book!Toothless wearing Hiccup's helmet is one of the most iconic images in the book, to the point where it even made it into the movie, so again, I wanted to use it. ^_^
