Oh wow. That is one friggin awesome shot. I think I should start experimenting with HDR. Seen, read and heard so much about it that I think it's about that time. How come the frame line looks so dark on the top left corner?

If used correctly, Bracketed HDR and tone-mapping can give you loads of flexibility in post. I definately recommend Photomatix Pro if you want to go that route. The tone-mapping algorithms in that software are far superior to all others I've used.

Lately, I've been using a gradient stroke around the photo edges. Each alternate corner fades in, then out. I think it looks a little more interesting than a solid line, but it depends on the shot.

That's really good... I need to get my camera out again... I've been super lazy.

Almost sepia, no? Cool work on this one.

I like your juxtaposition in this shot. Very well done. One of my New Year's resolutions is to try some HDR compositions.

Great! HDR can be loads of fun. What tone-mapping software do you plan to use?

To be honest I'd just read about HDR this summer. I'd done a couple of (unsuccessful) experiments. I'm interested in capturing trees in mild wind. Trunks stationary, the branches and leaves a blur but with the depth of HDR. But as they say, life is what happens when you're making other plans and I got trapped in an other writing project and couldn't pursue the experiments (it's now December and I'm still weeks away from completing my current writing gig).

What software do you use or recommend?

Steve

Wind can be a pain when shooting for HDR. Since you build your HDR image from multiple exposures, anything moving tends to fall out of alignment from shot to shot and you get these nasty ghosting artifacts.

Another option you might want to try is to tone-map a single image with a long-ish exposure for those moving branches you want. If you shoot in RAW, you tend not to use the full dynamic range anyway, so tone-mapping helps maximize that. I tried that with a few panning shots of horses in strong light and it made a huge difference.

I've had the best results from Photomatix Pro for any HDR or tone-mapping work I do. Have fun, HDR can be a challenge, but definately a worthwhile one.

It's certainly a look I want to move towards. Thanks for the info.
