I honestly think everything would be WAY different if the designs had stayed like this. I think mostly Twi's, Rarity's, and Pinkie/Surprise's colors would look pretty weird and stand out among the other ponies but hey that's just me xD

the only color scheme I dont like is Twilight's, since the white doesn't go very well with the light pink and bright purple (its prolly just me tho), and that Firefly/RD is already pink...

There's also the fact the half of them have a purple eye color, so it's kind of jarring.

I like Fluttershy as an earth pony, but the only thing I wouldn't keep is Pinkie/Surprise as a Pegasus. And lucky they swapped types when G4 came. Because pinkie pie, at the young flyers competition, would throw a party to distract the other guys and only Pinkie and Dashie would compete!

She didn't do it on purpose. Her plan was for this characters to be the main ones.
Hasbro didn't own the names of this ponies anymore, so she had to work with the ones they had. (Which involved several G3 ponies, like Pinkie Pie, Rainbow Dash and Rarity). Applejack is the only name which Hasbro has kept since G1.
Even Celestia was based off an original G1 pony: Queen Majesty.
Celestia was meant to be a Queen AND only ruler of Equestria (Luna wasn't in the plans). But Hasbro didn't own the rights to Majesty anymore AND didn't want a character portrayed as a Queen because they considered that the title had negative connotations, while Princess was more kids friendly.
