I'm not sure that it's right way to do, but can't come up with something else. I may draw them just like in original, or copy style of artists whose works I like, but both of possibilities seems worst for me.

You don't need to. You have your own art style. I saw artists who drew them as in the show and some who draw them close to realistic. You style is a good representation of their anatomy but with a more realistic anatomy. I like it a lot.

The artist I know who keep their proportions but with a more equine appareance: ecmajor.deviantart.com/ . Caution,the artist tend to make some suggestive works.
