Description (Originally dated 2014-06-23.)

A rough map of a plan I had to make the Qattara Depression a massive freshwater lake by diverting 5% of the flow of the Nile.

What if we just dig a canal between the depression and the sea?

I have always considered that an inferior idea, as then the depression would be seawater, or according to hydroelectric versions of the plan, hypersaline Dead Sea-like water. Ick.

BTW, the original calculation that 5% of the flow of the Nile would be needed to counter evaporation is incorrect, as I used evaporation rates from a pond in Phoenix as a reference. In fact, the northern Egyptian desert is waay cooler than Phoenix in summer due to Mediterranean influences, with Cairo and Memphis (now Giza) having comparable summers the towns on the Mississippi that they named. So it would more likely be 4% or whereabouts.

4% (plus whatever percentage is needed to prevent seawater intrusion) taken away prior to the Nile Delta. Upstream of Faiyum or wherever I intended to put the diversion there would be no effect.

It ain't much compared to the cumulative effects of water usage in other rivers. The Jordan flows at 1.6% of its original capacity. The Colorado sometimes doesn't even flow at all. Of course, the Nile Delta farmers would have to deal with ~4% less water on average... but prior to the intensive damming of the river, its flow varied by a factor of as much as 8 seasonally.
