Description
My character Flint in his most recent rethunk incarnation. It seems to be becoming a bit of a tradition with me to redraw Flint near then end of each year, refining and changing details. It's a good way to see how my styles developed over the year. I annotated this one too so I don't forget what I changed! So he's looking a bit older and wiser here, definitely less anime and more my own style which is good (he's looking less like Ike
Design wise his costume is much the same as the overhaul I gave it last year, just refined the armour and cloth elements a bit. Also changed his cloak to a cape - it'd been bothering me for a while! His sword is still a work in progress, but I want it to be a practical design based off a Nan Dao.
Sorry for the wall of text, it always happens with my characters

from the thumbnail pic i thought this was olde time Snake, then i found out it wasnt, then i was sad, but its still cool, so i am no longer sad
You should draw olde time snake, stealthing his way through the middle ages and shit, it could be called metal gear trebuchet or something...

Olde time Snake, now that is an idea! It will be an epic portrayal of the ancestor of Big Boss! I'll put the idea away for a rainy day

sweet. great job
so if his sword is the ethereal falcon, does he still use fire magic? or r u leaning towards wind?

Thanks man.
Hm hadn't really thought about magic much. The way I see it the weapons are an embodiment of an animal spirit you possess, a physical strength. So the Fu lion goes with the spear and the falcon goes with the sabre. Magic is more a manefestation of your spiritual and mental will so definitely still fire and also lightning which is a wicked element.
But I'm not really thinking of it in terms of universe and story any more - more as individual ideas that will progress heaps between drawings, it all changes.

oh no too much detail! I hope you don't have to make a comic series about him in which you have to draw all that detail in EVERY SINGLE PANEL!

Lol that's an excellent point! Though I got to thinking about comics and as much as I like them, that's not the way I tell stories. I'm not really good at dialogue and narrative and I like to draw with heaps of detail
When I was doing this drawing last year [link] I realised that I tell stories through single images, frozen moments in time. Like regular paintings I suppose, but with a more narrative vibe to it. My recent Metroid pic shows that too.
And especially with Flint, I first drew him 5 years ago, so his design has completely changed - but that progression IS his story, that's my comic. So in that case the more detail the better
