Now let’s talk about Hiei.

I got a request from to draw Hiei with long hair. That’s a strange thought in and of itself, and as I was drawing, I started to think. (I am wont to do this while I draw, and though the results are sometimes disastrous I think you’d like to hear my thoughts nonetheless.)

Anyway.

Hiei’s hair is spiky. If you didn’t notice this before now, you’ve been living under a rock. There are jokes about his hair putting out peoples’ eyes, about it defying gravity, about it being a feat of failed physics, all of that what-have-you and more. It’s an undeniable fact that spiky hair defines Hiei just as much as shortness, a grumpy attitude, and red eyes do.

But the most important question, in my head, is HOW THE HELL DOES IT STAY UP LIKE THAT, anyway?

The answer lies in my own experience. Once, you see, I shaved my head bald to keep a cancerous friend company (she was so ashamed of her appearance that I couldn’t help but do it; my empathy glands function permanently on overdrive). When the hair started to grow out, it did not lie flat along my scalp like I thought it would, so instead of a sporting a stylish pixie cut I ended up looking more like a hedgehog.

Why did this happen, you ask?

It’s because my hair is not only as thick as a horse’s mane, it’s as coarse as one, too. Eat your heart out, SeaBiscuit.

This leads me to believe that Hiei has the coarsest, thickest hair in the history of FOREVER, and that since Hiei wears ihis hair short, it is impossible to keep it lying flat. And given that anime physics are approximately 772.5% more dramatic than real-world physics, this theory makes even greater sense.

But what would happen, then, if he grew his hair out?

The answer: ponytails and fewer spikes.

And that’s really all I have to say about that.

BUT THAT’S NOT ALL I have to say entirely. Boy, am I a little faker.

Now I want to talk about Hiei’s height.

I am not convinced that Hiei is done growing. After all, he does go from 4’10 in the Dark Tournament to 5’3 by the end of the series (according to a stat sheet in one of the final manga volumes), so he exhibits growth just like a normal person/demon would.

Also considering that the Koorime women in his flashback sequences appear to be of normal size, it just wouldn’t make sense for Hiei to stay 4’11 inches tall for forever (unless his dad was a midget or a gnome or something, in which case my entire argument is in shambles).

Take this into consideration, as well: Hiei is not all grown up yet. Yukina is less than 100 years old, as evidenced by her lack of children, so that means Hiei is also juvenile, HENCE HE COULD TOTALLY GET TALLER WITH TIME.

As a Hiei fangirl who’s 5’10, PLEASE LET ME DREAM.
