Description
Image and text below 2005This drawing was inspired by a flood of thought-forms during an entheogenic mushroom trip. I saw consciousness as a resonating energy within a continuum. When I applied this to paper, it eventually evolved into a Staff of Caduceus, with the two serpent-heads as Kukulcan- the Mayan god, "plumed serpent." This energy flows from the head of a shaman, transfiguring the chaotic energy of lightning and ocean into transcendent vision, awakening, and healing.

Thank you. It's a strange process translating a multidimensional experience into a 2-dimensional image. I usually do not literally see a vision that inspires my work, but rather the visual "vision" coalesces through the creative process. So I did not literally see this image behind my eyelids, but built it to speak a visual symbolic languages that is embedded with the consciousness-energy of the experience.

This picture does not do the piece justice. It is an experience in itself to witness it in person.

And i love the way you explain how the drug controlled you to draw it.... i know that feeling as well, I've drawn many things i didn't know wtf they were, then found out later, they had to do with ancient religions (eye of horus, pyramids, the third eye, OM, birds ect.)

I would not say the drug controlled my drawing of it. I made the drawing weeks after the experience, using the experience as kindof a platform of inspiration and conviction from which to jump off and attempt to create something with power. I was playing with visual ideas of how to represent this tunnel-energy continuum of consciousness that i was seeing during the trip, and it seemed an obvious and graceful unfolding into the Caduceus. Are you referring to drawings done while tripping? I have done a few, and I think I can relate to what you are saying. Letting an entheogen just move your hand muscles and pour through the body is an intense meditation, and it is always exciting to see what comes of that. That method of drawing, at least for me, tends to render much less organized yet sometimes more deeply textured drawings.

I am hesitant to fully affirm the 2012 prophecy. There have been times that I was sure it will happen; other times I was sure it will not. I guess I have resolved to live my life to the utmost, Now, irrelevant of this possible future global transformation. I feel if we rely too heavily on a prophecy, we can easily be deluded. We can resolve to engage Now fully and authentically, and if this global transformation really is impending, I think many of us will see it coming, and only by engaging in transformative practices now will we learn to ride this transformation (if it happens) wisely and skillfully. Although it is incredibly exciting esoteric knowledge to explore. Crazy Mayans.

haha, yeah, I concur. It's a fun thing to consider. With your permission, I would like to go over this piece in illustrator and do some line art. I was going to get a tattoo of a Caduceus, and I really like your design here - a nice, non-traditional base to work off of.

Sounds kickass...go for it. Post an image of the line art on DA. I would enjoy seeing it. And if it eventually becomes a tattoo, take a photo of that too and post.

I'll take that as a compliment. Alex Grey has had a huge impact on me, and although I did not intend my work to look like his, often it does, not only from having seen so much of his work, but possibly from having had many similar spiritual experiences as him.

Thanks a lot, i was planning on adding some drawings soon, so your encouragement is appreciated. I have been browsing your drawings, some of which I thoroughly enjoy. In particular, ascension of St Albert, Nebula, and The Other Side. It seems you are tapping into vision logic or higher awareness. There is a mystical element, such as the symmetry of St Albert with the checker grid in the middle leading to the central form, that resonates with spiritual power. I wonder if you are at all inspired by entheogens/hallucinogens, and/or spiritual experience? And if there is any philosophy that empowers your work? Anyway, i look forward to looking at more of your stuff.
